We live on a moderately busy street. There are much busier ones and I would never want to live on them. I would move from the street I'm on right now because the traffic already stresses me.
So, if I had my choice, no, I wouldn't live on a busy street.

I live on a busy street that is a main road to several connecting highways. I like that everything is very near by. The noise is not a deal breaker since we've gotten use to it.

@.twist.: What is it about the traffic that stresses you? The noise? Parking?
persimmon / 1316 posts
I would probably rent on one knowing it would be temporary but I don't think I would ever buy a home on a busy street.
pomelo / 5129 posts
DH and I are house shopping and didn't even go inside one because of the location. I wouldn't feel safe parking on the street because of how high the speed limit is. If we had kids I'd worry about them getting into the street because it's super busy. And it would suck to ever take a left turn out of the driveway...and that's what we'd want to do to take the fastest route to 80% of the places we'd go.

@Cherrybee: Speeders and my child who is like a magnet to the street. Obviously he is never out of my sight when we're out front, but what if there were one time? Just one? aaaaah.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
No. It's harder to sell and I'd be worried about my LO or dog running into traffic.
grapefruit / 4997 posts
@.twist.: I agree, the traffic is terrible for me if i don't plan my escape accordingly during the weekdays. It has to be right before people get off of work or a couple of hours afterwards. I missed my BFF's kids birthday a few months ago because we were stuck in traffic.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@Kimberlybee: Our street isn't that buy, but I drove by one and watched a car try to get into his driveway. He had to hold up traffic behind him to wait for someone to let him in on the other side. It was insane. I said right then to DH that I would never want to live on a road where there was THAT heavy of traffic.

This was a deal breaker to us. I am such a light sleeper and Mr. Jacks has always lived in rural areas, so we prefer quiet adjacent to transportation.. So we are close to downtown, but not in the thick of it.
pomegranate / 3983 posts
I would not. We used to live on a pretty big street but our house was in a gated community so we were far enough back that noise wasn't an issue. Now we are on a semi busy street and I still don't like how fast cars drive- scares me with the LOs and I hate street parking. The other issue is if you have buses going by- loud and the exhaust is horrible (luckily they don't on our street).
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
We did when we rented, but I wouldn't buy. It was really loud (pre-kids) and I am sure I would have gotten tired of it after a few years. We only lived there for a year.
pineapple / 12053 posts
i wouldn't. my in laws live on a major street and i hate pulling into their driveway. their whole property is gated and the front yard that's on the street side is never used. hosting events is a hassle too because of street parking.
grapefruit / 4089 posts
No way! DH and I have discussed this a few times... we would definitely never buy on a high-traffic road. Pulling in and out of the driveway would be stressful, especially in the winter when the snowbanks are higher than my car. Plus, noise and worry about a kid or my dog running into the street.
pomelo / 5678 posts
We live on THE main street through our city and it is SO loud. Lots of ambulance and firetrucks. I hate it but I tune it out.
Being able to walk everywhere is priceless though.
cherry / 111 posts
@Cherrybee: I know it was a deal breaker for us, too. As most PPs said, it's too stressful and noisy for our taste. We also have two dogs, and one time one of them got out of our fenced in backyard. She ran all the way across the street (she's 12 lbs and probably not even 10 inches tall, so thats far for her!) and hid under a bush until we found her. I was so glad that day that we live on a quiet street with hardly any traffic!
nectarine / 2797 posts
No way. We wanted LO to be able to play in yard without worrying about her running into street.
persimmon / 1483 posts
Our house is on a busier street - it's not my favorite thing about the house but the rest of the features of the house (completely updated and walking distance to train) made it worth it. I also don't have any issues with noise, but I was moving from Brooklyn so anything would have been quieter We also have a large backyard that faces the woods. As for resale, I think it totally depends on the neighborhood and the current market - there was a bidding war for our house so clearly people were not deterred.
pineapple / 12793 posts
Nope. With kids and pets I worry about traffic. We live close to a major road, but we're downtown so it's more of a convienence than a nuisance.
pomegranate / 3521 posts
Nope! We live on a cul de sac now and I feel so spoiled. We will move in a couple of years and I can't imagine entertaining a house not on a cul de sac (even though I know we will likely have to). I love how quiet and neighborly it is.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
Nope, not with a family. When we were house hunting many beautiful homes were passed by because of the street they were on.
honeydew / 7917 posts
I grew up living on a busy road, and it sucked big time. I'm happy to live inside a quiet neighborhood.
grapefruit / 4584 posts
We used to, but this was a luxury high rise in a major city, so we didn't have a HUGE issue with road noise (we were high enough up and the glass was triple pAned).
We had to be vigilant with LO but she wasn't walking much at that point anyway - we used the stroller or Ergo. Being so close to lots of public transportation options and several grocery stores was a HUGE convenience factor.
honeydew / 7622 posts
Yes. We live on a small highway that feeds into a big highway. But we live downtown in a 100 year old home in a completely walkable neighborhood which was worth it. We are completely fenced in with an automatic gate, and even though the bedroom is in the front of the house with a fan on I rarely hear road noise. We are also a block and a half away from a college campus so there is a lot of foot traffic.
ETA I would much rather be a block off if I had the choice.
honeydew / 7504 posts
Nope. That was a deal-breaker for us. We wouldn't even consider a home on a main road, even if it had everything we were looking for. We like to host parties, we like to hang out in our yard, and we didn't wnat to have to worry about pulling out of our driveway during rush hour. Nope, nope, nope.
grapefruit / 4321 posts
Only if the house had a big yard and was set back well off the street. Like 50 yards or more.

We're about to be renting just off of a very busy street and we're really excited because of the area. I think with apartments it's ok but I probably wouldn't love it for a single family home. On the other hand, if it were the right city/location, I might do it!
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
Is used to live on a busier road (think 2 lanes in each direction, 60 kph speed limit). Not so busy that I ever worried about being able to get into/out of my driveway, but the noise was unreal. You couldn't hear the TV or have a conversation with the window open. I know now live 3/4 of a block away from an even busier street and it's so much better. You hear noise in the distance, but it's more like a hum.
honeydew / 7463 posts
We live on one of the busiest streets in NYC, probably even one of the busiest in the country. It has it's pros and cons but I don't hate it. Very noisy at times and lots of traffice (esp now with a 2 year construction project ). But it's also pretty convenient.
pomegranate / 3231 posts
In an urban apartment, I wouldn't care so much.
But if I moved to the 'burbs then there is no way I would buy a house on a street that would attract traffic beyond the local residents, their local guests, and the mailman.
Basically, I would trade a safe, quiet street for more walkability, but not for any other reason.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I might consider it, if I had a driveway that didn't require me to back out into the road.
pomelo / 5469 posts
Definitely not. I've never really lived on a busy street in my life and when I went to uni my room was right overlooking a main road into town and it was so hard to get to sleep in the Summer when I needed the window open! Plus with LO I'd worry about her escaping and running out into the road.
A lot of houses in this area are super close to the M4...there is an estate that we looked at because I didn't realise how close it was to the motorway but when we got there I was like wow how do people live there? It was so loud and from the garden I looked up and could read all of the motorway signs.

This was an absolute deal breaker for us. We found a house that was absolutely perfect for us, and a great deal in an excellent school district, but it was on a busy road so we didn't get it.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Absolutely not. This was a deal-breaker for me when we bought out house. It was hard too, because the majority of houses in our price range were on busy streets. And they were normally the "flipped" houses too, with new kitchens and baths - probably because they are impossible to sell otherwise.
I did compromise on having a view of a busy street from our backyard. Our property doesnt border it but we can see and hear the traffic. Nothing i can do about the noise, but we are doing heavy landscaping this summer to block the view. It's really not that bad though, we have an acre of yard in the back so the view is from far away.

We live on a busy street. It isn't my favorite, but isn't a deal breaker either. Some cons:
1. Road noise is the biggest. When the windows are open in the front we hear everything. If some punk in a car decides to rev their engine and scream up the road it's freaking annoying. Also, DH has determined he has a hearing issue, and living here makes it worse for him.
2. We're not in a community. This is a bummer for E, as she can't go meet neighborhood kids.
I'm not concerned about her running out into the road because there's a rock wall between us. I suppose she could always go down the driveway, but there's steps in the way, so that's a bit of a buffer.
In our situation there's a traffic light nearby, so that stops traffic and allows us to exit. There's also a turning lane, so if coming from the other direction we can pull into that and not block traffic while waiting to turn into our driveway.
There's a small old mill/factory behind our house with a parking lot, so that's where people park if here for a party, and where E can ride her bike when she's older.
