@Mrs. Sketchbook: I don't mess with poultry so no but it should have more than just a sell by date... is there no best before on it? Here all product must be marked with both..

Smell test, sure... if it's within 1-2 days. DH is really finicky about chicken tho, so we throw it away even at the slightest lil off smell or extra slime!

My DH's family owns a few grocery stores and quality assurance is very strict (at least in Canada) and the "best buy" date is often very overly cautious. We eat a lot of food that they're not allowed to sell in the store but is perfectly safe to eat.

@pui: Same here. My mom worked in food safety and said the same thing - the sell-by and best-before dates are extremely cautious. That being said, we always give it the sniff/slime test first, but a sell-by date of Friday wouldn't really bother me too much today, but I wouldn't let it go any longer.

@mrswin: actually in the US they can pretty much do whatever they want! You see all sorts of things...use by...sell by...expiration...best by....they all have meanings set by the company that made it!
We are going to eat it, assuming it smells ok when I get it out of the packaging. I am going to make chicken adobo and boil the crap out of the whole thing!

Best before doesn't usually equal inedible after.
If it seems like it's still good I'd eat it.

No, not with meat. I wouldn't be able to enjoy it - I'd keep thinking it tasted funny even if it didn't.

It is in my belly now. Time will tell!
It was delicious btw. I boiled for two hours it until it just shredded off into big chunks. I think if I had roasted it I would have been more paranoid, but with all that vinegar and soy sauce I couldn't taste anything else!

If it smelled ok and I cooked the crap out of it. I just did this on friday, actually. Now the chicken is cooked and I'll put it into enchiladas or something tomorrow.
