These are some examples I can think of:
Hannah - Joanna
Nicole- Cole
Christine- Christopher
Justina- Justin
Yay or too confusing?

No, it would be confusing! My middle name is my grandmother's name and my great aunt's name, and my sister's middle name is my mom's name, and even that is confusing enough.

Nope. I grew up with my sister and I having WAAAYYYY too similar names (Karalyn and Katherine) and they were ALWAYS getting mixed up and it drove me crazy, so I would never give my daughter a similar name to mine or to a sibling's. I might do the opposite gender--Justine/Justin--because there's less chance of mix-up there, but probably not.

Yay. If DH can name a boy after him, I can name a girl after me.
I've been toying with the idea of using my first name as a middle name (like Margaret Mary), but shortening it to Mae (Maggie Mae)
But I don't feel like using the name "Mary" is really like naming a kid after me. I'm Irish Catholic. It's sort of expected to be in the name in some form.

No, I was weird about that. We liked the name Elodie but we figured the nn would be Ellie and I'm Kelly, so I didn't like that. I know a family that's Sara/Tara for mom and kid and it's just a little weird to me. I wanted her to have her own identity.

My mom's name is Maria, and you know what? I've never thought that I was named after her (but I guess in a way I am?)

We kind of accidentally gave him a name with the nn that seems like a combo of our names. A couple people thought that was our motivation in naming him this but I swear we didn't even realize it until after he was born. Oof.

Nope. But I don't like my name. I do like girl names that start with L or have an L or LL in them and end in a vowel, so technically my name and LO's name both fit that criteria, but they don't sound alike.

Weeell I kind of did, on accident? I really (and really, I didn't) think about the nickname for LO rhyming with my nickname. Maybe subconsciously I did, but now I feel a bit dumb about it. Still love her name, but LO #2 will have a name that is nothing like mine!

Coworker is Laura and has a Lauren. She contemplated not using it because of the similarity but it was the only name her and her DH could agree on.
I won't, but not against using my middle name for a middle name.

@autumnlove: LOL we almost did that anyway. Effie- just replace the L's with F's, haha. I just couldn't get down with Ellie. It doesn't help that my name being popular growing up bugged me, so I didn't want to do the exact same thing with basically my name minus the K. It would be like my husband Brian having a kid Ryan.

My husband is Alex and my daughter is Alice. Probably confusing or weird to others, but in the end it was our favorite name so we went with it.
pomelo / 5678 posts
I wouldn't. I know families that all have variations (Jenna, Jennie, Jeanie, etc.)
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
Probably not. I LOVE the name Gemma, but I'm Jen and I think it's too similar.

No. In Jewish culture it's bad luck to name a child for someone living so if it's too close it gives me the creeps!
grapefruit / 4442 posts
Nope, i wouldn't even know how to make a similar name with my name LOL

@bunnylove08: trying to remember your name from our classifieds transaction! LOl!

My name is Noa and my wife is into the idea of using Noah for a boy, like a jr, kind of. I think it's a cute idea in theory but I don't love the name Noah (I do love my name) and our other boy would be Abraham...too much.

nope. DH really loved a name - I loved too! - but I nixed it for that very reason. it was only one/two letters off from mine. lol.

My husband's aunt and uncle are Paula and Stephen and they named their children Paul and Stephanie. It's endlessly confusing.

There is a name that both my husband and I really like but it's similar to my name so I vetoed it.
pomelo / 5220 posts
Definitely not a name that sounds like my name when pronounced... too confusing!

Hmm, I can't decide if one of the names we've chosen for a boy is too similar to DH's name. Both two syllables and lots of vowels and rhyme. Haha but other than that, very different!

We were at a hibachi style restaurant and this pregnant mother was there with her daughter who must have been about 7. Her daughter was talking to everyone and said her name was Octavian. She said her mom's name was Octavia. She said her baby brother's name was going to be Octavius. My DH and I just smiled and said "Oh, wow!"

@MamaMoose: I totally wanted to do that but DH nixed it
@Mrs.Panda: I know a brother and sister who are named Gabriel and Gabriela. I don't think the parents are named anything similar though.
