Is it crazy to think of doing? Assuming no border traffic it's 2hours.

I guess I would need more info. I don't see the problem? You're going on vacation? A day trip? Are you worried about going into labor while you're across the border?

@mrsjazz: yes! Considering a day trip across the border our anniversary. And yes, I'm worried about going into labor across border.

@locavore_mama: I mean, anything could happen. I would be more worried about how I felt physically than going into labor. How far is your hospital away from there and how long were you in labor with your LO? I think if you want to go, you should go, and just have a game plan. For instance if you start experiencing real contractions before the trip, then cancel.
Man, I wish Canada still gave citizenship to babies born there because I'd go over to have my baby just for that!

I'd do it your case but I wouldn't do in reverse. Having a baby in the US without insurance coverage freaks me out. Canada would take good care of you if anything happened while you were here.

I wouldn't cross the border because US hospital costs are $$$!! My private insurance would have covered a bit but not fully. I would check into your policy. When we were in Maine when I was 7 months pregnant my dh joked that if I went into labor I would have to cross my legs while we high tailed it back to Canada! Lol

Only if I had insurance. Canadian hospitals will send you a ginormous bill if you had your baby here.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
haha the more I think about it the more I'm thinking no. The insurance i have now will cover my L&D in full.
pomegranate / 3895 posts
I would lean toward no. Do you have travel insurance and have you checked to make sure it would cover you while travelling late in your pregnancy?

Lol, when I read this I automatically assumed you meant Mexico, and I was like hell no! I was like, why is everyone talking about Canada? Haha.

I feel like it'd be okay... It's just 2 hours away. If for some reason you are starting to labor, it would suck but you should still have plenty of time to make it back?

I would probably do it if I were showing no labor signs. I work an hour away from home and it's closer to 2 hours in Friday traffic sometimes but I still went to work every day in my 3rd trimester (until the week before LO arrived).
It's not a different country but I feel like unless you have incredibly fast laboratory, you have time.
If it makes you feel more prepared-- keep your hospital bags in the trunk.

Nope. I would be worried about the costs and because I'm not a citizen of the US, my LOs need to be born here to be citizens!
nectarine / 2466 posts
No. I had my baby just after 37 weeks and labour was really quick. Wouldn't risk it.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
Same as @MrsB2012: I went into labor at 37+3 (water broke) and LO was born less than 7 hours later. I'd have been a mess if we had far to go to get to the hospital.
nectarine / 2217 posts
Personally I wouldn't because having a baby in the us with no insurance would kill out finances:) (Canadian bee here!) and also lo#2 came in 3 hours from my first contraction:) I wouldn't judge anyone who decided to do it, though!!:) have a great anniversary regardless of what u decide to do!

My first LO was early and I worry the same for the second, so I wouldn't. Though if I had to have a baby somewhere else, Canada isn't a bad place to do it.

No but I wouldn't even leave town during the ending weeks. I am very cautious. I'd say if you couldn't deal with possibly givin birth there don't go. Babies come when they want to. Good luck!

I was around 30 weeks when I travelled to Montreal to visit friends. I purchased travelers health insurance for the weekend (I think it cost $40) and it covered up to $500K USD. I had to make sure it was one that covered pregnancy and that I travelled with my medical records.

In theory, probably. In reality, the thought of that bridge in the summer might be enough to scare me away. Giving birth in Canada is one thing; I would be afraid of going into labor on that stupid bridge in the middle of a traffic jam

I guess it all depends on which border you are talking about... Living in the US, I would probably feel comfortable in Canada but definitely not in Mexico. I live in the NE, so Mexico is far from home while Canada is a few hours by car.

I think if you're showing no signs of labor and go 2hrs or less away it should be fine. But it wouldn't hurt to check and see what your insurance covers if something were to happen!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I was thinking Mexico too--like do we really need to have this conversation?! Ohhh Canada!
pineapple / 12566 posts
Nope. LO2 arrived at 37+2 and I hadn't had any signs of labor until the day of (bloody show then water broke 4 hours later). Once the contractions started, she was born within 45 minutes

I would, and did (Canada into the US) ... but then I've been post dates with all my pregnancies and it never crossed my mind that I might go into labour that early.
