No, I would politely decline! Otherwise I would be stressed out the whole time with who I would talk to, etc since they aren't close friends.

Why not? Maybe she wants to be friends. I think it's nice she's reaching out and including you.

I would go if she seems like friendship potential. I think it was nice of her to extend an invite to someone in her new circle of friends, or future friends.

not unless i wanted to become closer friends in the future, if i was fine where things are at, then no, i wouldn't go.

Plus, you never know who you might know or meet. I am pretty shy as well, so I get that part of it.

Agree with others that I would go if I thought there was potential to make some new friends. Maybe she doesn't have many mommy friends and is looking for more.

if i sensed that i had friend potential with the mom-to-be, then i would consider going. otherwise i would send a gift with a nice card and not go to the shower. sounds like maybe she was being super welcoming, which is nice (or maybe gift grabby, who knows, but i'd like to think the former).

Did the coworkers wife mention why she really thinks you should be there? My first instinct would be no way, but like others said, if you want to spark a friendship maybe this is the way to go about it.

@coopsmama: maybe the coworker's wife is just a "connector"--I'm that type. Sometimes I meet one person and I think, "Oh, she would really get along with my friend Megan because they like all the same things and have kids the same age" and then I attempt to plan get-togethers that include both of them.

It's just my personality. All my Texas friends tell me that they hardly ever see each other now that I'm not there to organize parties and gatherings (we moved away 3 years back).

No, that sounds incredibly uncomfortable, I would just have DH explain you have other plans that day. I would probably send a VERY small gift since I feel bad not sending anything.

I'd go if I liked the person inviting me. It's just for a few hours and you may meet some new friends! I went to a wedding once where the only people I knew were the bride, groom, and my husband, and that was horrible since my husband was in the bridal party.
