Would you pay to subscribe to Hellobee?

We're seeing really high rates of ad blocking on Hellobee... it's really tough b/c baby blogging isn't all that lucrative to begin with. So when the majority of people accessing the site block all ads, that puts a real damper on an ad-supported site like ours.

We're trying to figure out a revenue model that works given the reality of ad blocking these days. The one model that appeals to me is subscriptions, because it aligns our goals with our members' goals.

Which brings me to the questions:

1) Do you get value from Hellobee... is it something you'd pay for?
2) If so, how much would you pay?
3) What kind of extra features would you be looking for in return: private forums? Private messaging? An iPhone/Android app? Extra blog content that's members only? Something else entirely?

Thanks!

I think I WOULD pay...I'm just not sure how much and for what. Hmm...I'll have to think about it.

    Private messaging would be nice!

I definitely value HB but I don't think it'd be in our budget to pay for it as much as I'd want to!

    1) Do you get value from Hellobee... is it something you'd pay for? I probably would at this point because I'm addicted, but it would have deterred me as a new member--something to consider when thinking about future bees!
    2) If so, how much would you pay? I don't know--don't currently pay for any apps or subscriptions to anything so I have no frame of reference.
    3) What kind of extra features would you be looking for in return: private forums? Private messaging? An iPhone/Android app? Extra blog content that's members only? Something else entirely? Private messages would be nice. Or free donuts.

    1. Yes! No only do I get advice, I also feel like I get a lot of support and friendship from the other members.
    2. Maybe $10 a month or so tops, but I'd be worried membership might drop and leave the boards too quiet.
    3. Yes, more bells and whisTrtles, messaging and an app would be great.

I don't use ad blocking, you guys gotta buy groceries too! I try to remember to click on interesting ads from time to time to help support this awesome place!

ETA- I would happy pay for an Android app! Name your price, using the browser can be a real pain sometimes!

I would pay, I think. Especially if there were more content, such as expert advice on education, health, etc. and also a widened age range. It's hard to pay for something that you will quickly outgrow. Private anything would really be nice. I would pay for an iphone app separately as well since most of my HB's is done on the phone.

@mrbee: I would pay for an HB app!

Also, how do subscriptions work? Like a newsletter subscription?

What about paying to get additional features? I would be open to paying money to get added features like iphone app, private forums and private messaging. Maybe additional entries in contests that you have? It could be an upgrade feature. Like, I would like upgrade to the HB+ account! Kinda like the Hula accounts and Hulu plus accounts.

So I'm a cheapo but I would be willing to pay $10 a year for those features. MrBee, please let me know if you are insulted by that amount. I'm sorry!!

I would pay...but a yearly thing would interest me more than paying monthly, and it would depend on the price. I do love this site. I'm not sure what I would consider reasonable, though.

    An app would be awesome!

I would not pay. I come and go from the boards as it is and if it was a paid site, I would just forget about it. I love HB but not enough to pay. I do hope you can figure out something to keep it as is though

Yes, I would pay. Not sure how much though. I would be more willing to pay if there were more advanced features like private messaging, expert bloggers, training videos, more downloadable content, etc. I wouldn't be opposed to paying $5-$10/month maybe?

p.s. I would rather it be a yearly fee than a monthly one--easier to absorb into a tight budget.

@Lindsay05: I agree with you. I would hope that there would still be a free site with forums and blogs but just a paid section for other features.

-I don't even know how to block ads!

-I love HB (obviously), and I think I've learned so much about pregnancy and parenting that I wouldn't have known otherwise. It certainly has value to me. I would probably pay at this point if it were a pretty low annual fee, but honestly, Mr. Blue would not be happy about it since our budget is tight with babies and student loans. If I had just encountered the sight and wasn't already addicted, honestly, I would not have subscribed because I'm kind of miserly and I wouldn't know the full wealth of what I was missing. Sorry to be Debbie Downer. I would be totally willing to pay for a HB app, though.

-If I were going to pay, I think private messaging would definitely be a nice touch. Maybe more content, checklists, & guides for subscribers would be good.

I love HB and I use it just about everyday, but I wouldn't pay. We're on a super tight budget as it is. If payment was required when I originally signed up, I wouldn't have signed up, which is sad! I think payment would be a deterrent to new members. I've never hidden an ad - didn't even realize it was an option! The ads on HB don't bother me.

While I love HelloBee and understand you gotta make a living, I would not pay for the blog and forums as they are right now.

If you built new features for premium users, I might consider it. It would have to be in the range of $20/year though. I can't see myself paying more than that for content.

I support HelloBee by not blocking ads and probably via affiliate links as well, since I buy tons of stuff from Amazon and have clicked through using the links here. In fact, I'm about to make a big order right now, and I will go and find a HB affiliate link to click on!

I love the site but not sure I would pay. Like others have mentionoed, I don't pay for any of my phone apps or other subscriptions as it is. If there was a paid vs. free portion of the site, I'd keep using it but (as much as I hate to say this), I think I'd end up moving to a free site instead =/

I would pay, because I'm addicted, but I wouldn't as a new member. In fact, I'd get quite turned off (in the same way that it annoys me that all the newspapers are going to online subscriptions). I would definitely pay for an app.

I would pay. I find value in the site, and I've paid for access to other websites before (Fertility Friend VIP when I was TTC). I'm not sure what a fair amount would be, I guess it would depend on what is offered. I'd enjoy private messaging and forums, and an app would be great. I agree with others, a yearly fee would be easier than monthly (though a 6 month option would work too).

Ps - I feel bad about the ad blocking, though I didn't realize the ads were being blocked on my PC. Never thought about the impact!

I would pay if everyone else paid... What I mean is HB does provide value to me because I can get quick reliable answers from experienced women whom I trust. If lots of members (especially certain individual posters that I have a relationship with) chose not to pay the value wouldn't be there for me any more. I enjoy the blog posts but to me the value is more in the community.

I would definitely pay for an app! Up to $10 maybe?

    PS I don't ad block : )

I would totally pay for a Hellobee app but wouldn't pay for the site - not that I don't love HB and find it's totally valuable, but because DH would probably think I'm crazy and it would become more of a commitment than a casual chat forum.

I really enjoy Hellobee and feel like I've gotten to know a number of ladies since we all migrated from WB but I wouldn't pay for it. I don't even pay for apps that I really want. *cheapo*

I think the problem with having a paid site is that it's not really standard (I've never come across a paid public forum site), and it discourages new members. If you can't see the content, how do you know you want to join?

Or would people be able to see, but not post without a subscription? If that's the case, you run into the danger of severely reducing your content creating population, which makes it less attractive to come, therefore creating a downward spiral.

I would pay for an app (one time fee, <$5), I *might* pay a small subscription fee (~$2/month) for added content like private messaging and private forums. I would not want to pay for view or posting privileges.

honestly, probably not. And definitely not if I were a first-time user. There's a local mom's group for me that I keep hearing about, but I still haven't joined just because you have to "register" and I'm so lazy it takes me a long time to even do a free registration.

How can we make sure not to block the ads?

I find HB content fantastic, and once officially TTC I would pay a nominal fee. I agree with @tororojo: the subcription should be annual.

What if the price structure was similiar to a discounted parenting magazine?

For a fee, I would want to "like" poster responses, a Nursery tab to view pics, a Series tab, and an easier way to see and reprint Printable guides. I would also want expert bloggers- a obgyn, pediatrician or RN.

Hellobee has been really beneficial to me during my pregnancy, and I plan to continue to use it as an advice forum after baby is here. I also use it to waste time -- basically a FB alternative. However, I would never pay for it. I wouldn't pay for membership to any website, though, no matter how much I use it now. It's just not one of those things that I could justify.

I love hello bee but we could t afford to pay for internet websites with our budget I don't get why ppl block ads on this site, they are very subtle and don't vet in the way plus there some good ads ( I just bought diapers fro. One of the ads alerting me to a sale!)

I could see paying an annual fee for bonus features. Maybe $20 a year.

  31. regberadaisy

    GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts

Depends. I would prefer it be a one time fee of say like $20. If it was a reoccurring fee I might do a yearly if it was say like $5-10. But if it was a monthly reoccurring fee then def not.
In return I would def want a private members only area. Now with the new updates we can post on iPhone so I don't really need a iPhone app anymore. Maybe contests open only to paid members.

Would you still have certain areas that are open to the general public to build traffic?

I love HB, and I've gotten such value from it, especially knowing that others are going through the same things as I am. However, I'm not one to pay for any subscriptions, so although it's a great site, I wouldn't want to pay. It would be hard to do, but I'd have to stop using the site.

  33. regberadaisy

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: oh, I really like that suggestion of "expert" advice. But that can be tricky to because technically they are not suppose to dole out advice over the internet. But I guess they can be of the generic nature.

I belong to one site that doesn't require membership. You can access the site for free... But with a subscription comes ad blocking and other value added perks. Members get access to discounted for sale materials, discounted attendance at the yearly conference held by the community etc.

We also have membership drives that give community members an opportunity to buy each other gift memberships. I am far less likely to buy myself a subscription, but I would buy a subscription for a friend in a heartbeat. That gifting idea might even help *expand* the community. I can envision buying a subscription for friends who become pregnant as a congratulations gift or for friends starting their adoption journey.

I don't think I'd pay at this point (not even TTC) but I might to use resources when it becomes more needed in my life. I'd buy an app quicker than subscribing to a website.

I think if there was a fee, people would migrate to different sites offering similar things with no fee.

I would pay for the app though.
