I'm having real difficulty with the idea of returning back to work once my maternity leave is over in December. I had always planned to be a WOHM but since my LO joined our family, I am seriously reconsidering staying at home with her until Summer 2013 or even beyond that. LO would be in daycare once I go back to work as we have no family here.

Staying at home means giving up a very lucrative salary. I currently make $140k which is about 40% of our household income. We have no debt besides our mortgage so even if I quit working, we would still be fine financially. Our high incomes allow us to save a lot for retirement and travel. We don't live extravagantly except for our travel.

If I quit my job, I think the main financial repercussion is that I'd lose my unvested stock (I think its worth around $40k over 4 yrs). If I quit working for several years, it would delay our early retirement plans. Also, while there's no guarantee I'd be able to get another job paying the same, odds are good that I'd be able to find another job fairly quickly.

Financial freedom is so important to us, but now that I've had a LO, I don't want to miss a moment with her either, especially in her first year. What would you do in my situation? Would you quit just so you could stay home an additional 6-9 months beyond your maternity leave? Would you stay home longer? Is it worth giving up a six figure salary?

Btw I'm a regular poster but I wanted to give some specifics that I'm not comfortable putting out there in my regular account where I've posted pictures and discussed other details of our life!
