I would choose #1. I would love to explore on our own and I actually like being able to try foods in local restaurants and grocery stores. and I don't drink so that part of the all inclusive resort doesn't matter to me.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: yeah it sounds like he wants to "relax" but you want more of an experience. I am the same way and would chose n.1 for spontaneity.

@jhd: yeah I'll be pregnant so thr unlimited drinks doesn't appeal to me right now.

@PurplePeony: do you remember how far it is from the heart of Lahaina to the beach?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: hmm, I'm not sure. We stayed in Wailea and just drove up to Lahaina for a day, so we weren't so focused on going to the beach. I'd guess you could walk to the closest one in about 20 minutes? There are some great beaches that are a short drive away, which is fine if you have parking at the condo, though you have to pay for parking in some lots IIRC. It's been almost 2 years since we were there so my memory is a bit rusty.

10 minutes is too long of a walk for the beach! I'd take 2 all the way.

Based just on the info in the original post, I would choose #2. But after reading through your responses AND most importantly, seeing that you will be pregnant-- #1.
Hawaii > any all-inclusive while pregnant
If I can't partake in the free drinks, I would count that as a NEGATIVE. LOL.

I didn't love PV. I know a lot of people do but I felt cooped up at the hotel and the beach was ok. We found some nice beaches around but they're a drive from the hotels.

@Maysprout: my sister went there for her honeymoon and said the sea water was kind of gross .... did you find that to be true?

No interest in #2 for me! The point of travel for me is to see new places, try new foods, explore a different culture. I'd rather have new experiences by traveling around.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: yeah. It did seem a little dirty, not that there was trash or anything. My husband really didn't like the water there. theres not many waves either and its a very built up area. I donno it just was too hotelly for me.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: My Dh had this exact, and I mean exact conversation last month. He wanted to go to Puerto Vallarta and stay at an all inclusive resort. I wanted to stay at a condo in Hawaii, rent a car, cook in room but still eat out, purchase our drinks at Costco or the likes, have leisure time to explore, etc.
We settled on Oahu, condo, jeep rental, kitchenette, a couple activities booked through Costco and Groupon (don't forget about Groupon!). We used Costco Travel, after I priced through apx. 10 different travel sites!

@StbHisMrs: we ended up booking an all inclusive, BUT, we got an unlimited pass to a park that has lots to dox like snorkeling and floating underground rivers and shows. So I guess it's a compromise because we definitely won't be confined to the resort! I hope you have fun on your vacay!

I'd pick #1. You could go to a few restaurants with the rental car if not wanting to cook but I much prefer a nice beach compared to murky water

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I hope you have fun too!! I honestly wouldn't complain about either, because who would??!
