Would you rather know a lot of people with your name or be the only one you know with your name?

I *am* the only person with my name that I know of, and it's kind of annoying! LO definitely is and it'll be even more annoying for her.. NOBODY can pronounce or spell it. Sigh.

I have only ever met a couple people with the same name as me, and I like it that way! That being said I hated it as a small child and wished I had a more typical name

I guess it depends on the name? I like classic names that are uncommon. I know one or two other people with my name, and that's fine with me.

I voted common name because I sometimes think being unique goes too far (like having really weird spellings of a name or a name no one knows how to pronounce). Also, I work with another Adira and we're good friends! We refer to each other as "the other Adira" and will even send Christmas cards to each other signed "Other Adira". We have a lot of fun with the fact we have the same name!

I'm the only person I know with my name- I don't like it, I'd rather have something a tad bit more common. All I hear is, "My 80 year old grandma has that name."
My husband has a very common name for our age group- so we compromised on something out of the top 50 for our kiddos.

I have a super common name, and always hated it. I gave LO a unique, old fashioned name...she might hate me for it later lol!

I have a name that was in the top 5 the year i was born. Growing up I had a least 3 kids in my class every year that shared my name, but very few characters in movies, TV and books had my name (except one of the Tanners on Full House). We decided on a name while common in that most people have heard of it as a name and its picking up popularity in TV and Movies not many people actually know one in real life.

Be the only one. I am the only one that I know of and I prefer it!

I have a semi-unique first name but only because it's a nickname...however it's the nickname for one of the most popular names in the mid 80s...I like that it's not the most popular name, but hate that I still get looped in with them!

I'd rather have a unique name as you tend to be remembered for it. I've met one other person with my name.

ETA I have a super common name and plan to name all my LOs uncommon but easily spelled names. I just don't want to be the bad guy but it looks like a lot of you have done the same thing!

@anonysquire: I don't think your name is SUPER common! Kinda for the generation/birth year(s) but not as common as some other names like Jennifer or Katherine.

I would rather be the only one. I've never met anyone else with my name, though I've seen it in writing and on TV.

It depends...how weird/unusual/out there is the unique name? I prefer my very common name over something like Banayna
bananas / 9229 posts
@blackbird: What's wrong with the name Banayna? That's my name, I just go by Lindsay.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@LindsayInNY: Hahhaha it feels so freaking common. Maybe just in Utah? ALl growing up I always had 1 or 2 Lindsays in each class. Ugh!

I have, what I call a 'middle of the road' name - it's a common place name but isn't actually used that commonly (make sense?). This way my name is considered common, but I've only ever really met a handful of people with my name.
So having (sort of) seen both sides, I have to go with being the only one you know with the name.
ETA - Ellie isn't my real name. My name begins with the letter L and my maidenname with an E - there was another girl in school with the same first name and it's because of her that I have a nickname.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@blackbird: Lets just say one is a noun (I think) but not used for a name that I know of. But very easy to spell. And everyone has heard the word in their life.

I'm the only person with my name, unless there's another thanks not searchable (really I'm the only one that comes up of you meta crawler my name).
I prefer it be like that. Love my super unique name.

Only one!
I didn't know many people with my name growing up but now I know a few.
I wouldn't want bizarre though.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@runsyellowlites: I love your name!
@Mrs. Pen: What do you consider bizarre?

Mine's decently common. The spelling makes most people think I'm a male, which is annoying on cold calls. LO's name is uncommon but easily spelled/pronounced and I love it!

@anonysquire: I couldn't remember if your name was public or not so I was trying to be discrete! I had a couple. One was a Lyndsey. It's definitely an early 80s now and then came back a bit early 90s or so too, I think?
cherry / 157 posts
@anonysquire: just to jump in -- even if it's a word everyone has heard, people will still get it wrong or ask for spelling clarification.
My mom's married name is Hill and she gets asked constantly how to spell it.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@lindsayinny, I didn't want to pick a name that someone *COULD* legitimately name their kid! But surely, nobody will name their child Banayna (banana with a Y, lol. i was thinking of fruit, like Apple...)

My general rule when coming up with names was it had to sound like the name of someone who could be president. I mean, obviously things change but I'd be surprised if we ever elect a President Princess Consuela Banana Hammock
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@LindsayInNY: Oh ok, thanks for being discrete lol. It just feels common. Maybe I am exaggerating it in my head? Oh well
bananas / 9229 posts
@blackbird: Haha, I knew that. I just think I have an awesome sense of humor but I don't Luckily DH knew that and married me anyways. Poor guy.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@Ellie: What the heck? How else could you spell hill? You are so right about that though. I hope people know how to spell it. Once they get over the shock of the name...
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
@anonysquire: nope, I wouldn't, but there have been a lot of studies about how really "out there" names impact people's ability to get jobs, etc. i don't think its fair, but I do think it a reality. We picked a name with several nickname options so that she could decide what she liked to be called when she is older. I think whatever names you have picked will be wonderful, that's just how I did it.

@anonysquire: and of course, a name doesn't define someone. I read about a woman named Marijuana Pepsi who is an attorney.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@Silva: Lol just making sure! Hopefully my kids will be celebrities or rock stars and the names wont matter too much? Or hopefully in 16 years when they get a job, everyone has unique names
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@Silva: I would not pick her as an attorney. Obviously she has bad taste in drinks!

I prefer uncommon names (in that not a lot of people have them) but ones that are still easy for people to spell. My middle name is Lyndsey and it has always been annoying because on the occasions I need to give it to people I have to explain "It's Lyndsey. But with a Y. No after the L. L-y-n-d-s-e-y." I'd prefer something like a "Jane" where you know how to spell that but it doesn't feel like you really know many people with that name.

Unique names, the story of my life, both my full first name and nickname are obscure. When I was growing up I would always be upset because they never had my names on things (mini license plates, ornaments, etc).
pear / 1799 posts
I don't know anyone with my name. There's a popular TV show with a main character with my name, but it's spelled differently. But, in real life, no one ... and I like it!
