We just moved into a one story from a three story, and LOVE it! Definitely prefer one story.

We have a 3-story right now... I would prefer a 1 now. Though I wouldn't mind a 2... anything sounds better than a 3.

I'd prefer a one-story. OH has a disability which may leave him in a wheelchair or at least difficult to climb stairs as he gets older. The topography around here is such that the living area can be street level, but the bedrooms a floor above grade and still be a one-story house.

I grew up in a ranch, and specifically sought out a two-story house when we bought!

I love our one story ranch. I have a couple of friends with two story homes and their kids either sleep with them or on the couch/pallet because of the stairs.
Our last home was a three story and I said never again! I hated it.

@BabyBoecksMom: I would prefer a 1 story with a full basement, which is what we have... now just years of renos ahead to make it the way I want it haha.

We have a 3 story now- but just use the basement for storage. I'd like a one story with a lid or daylight basement, but with the master and everything on the main.

I think there are pros and cons to both. I grew up in a one-story and always felt like I never really had my own space. We have a two-story now and I love it. LO's bedroom is upstairs and ours is down so after she's in bed we get the first floor to ourselves and as she gets older she'll pretty much have free rein over the second floor. It's really an awesome setup.

I like 2 stories- all the living space on the first floor and bedrooms upstairs. While the kids are little I would want to have all the bedrooms on the same floor, though when they are older I see the appeal of @lawbee11: setup.
But right now we are in a one story condo and I do appreciate that everything is one level.
Definitely not 3 story though! (Not counting basements though- wouldn't mind a basement plus two regular stories, which is what I grew up in).

Two! I don't like bedrooms on the ground floor, it freaks me out for some reason.
Our house has three stories but the top floor (loft) is the guest bedroom/ensuite, so I usually only go up there when I need something specific. However, due to our ongoing bathroom renovation, the loft has our only functioning full bathroom (other than a WC toilet only on the ground floor) so I've been running up to it with my toddlers several times per day and it sucks. Two floors is ideal!
ETA: we don't have a basement - three stories of above ground living space.

I voted one story and I like my one story but I miss the privacy of a two story. I feel like I have to clean all the rooms before anyone comes over in my one story. In my two story nobody would see messy bedrooms.

Not sure...I grew up in a ranch but the bedrooms are at the opposite end of the house from the living room where the TV and computer are. So my parents didn't have to worry about waking my brother and me after we were asleep. I like that layout. The house DH and I bought is a "raised ranch," so it's basically set up as a one-story but it also has a partially finished walkout basement. We haven't made the downstairs "family room" area into a good hangout space yet, though, so the TV is in our living room on the main level. The layout there is the living room in the middle with the kitchen at one end and the bedrooms at the other. I'm always nervous about turning up the TV or having too much light spill into the bedroom area after DD is sleeping.
Overall, I don't mind either type of house but I think layout is really key! I definitely wouldn't want more than two stories, though.

We just bought a 1-story home and looked pretty much ONLY at 1-story homes. DH has an ankle that gives out sometimes and he was/is paranoid about me or DS tumbling down the stairs (my BF tumbled down the stairs when she was pregnant and went into pre-term labor so it was like his worst nightmare when I was pregnant). We also have some friends who have trouble with stairs and figure as our parents age that will also be an issue, so DH just felt like whatever home we own should be as welcoming and accessible for everyone as possible. This isn't our forever home, but when we build it will definitely be 1-story. They are just more expensive!

1, absolutely. I'd actually like a "small house" (under 1000 square feet, just up from a tiny house), but DH is against it. In that case I would want a loft, but otherwise I hate multi-story homes (for me; I don't dislike them if I'm not the one living in them).

I love the look of older two story homes, but I like the convenience of a one story.

2 (above-ground) stories. I just don't really care for the look and feel of ranches. And I consider basements to be different from a "normal" floor.

We lived in a 1 floor, 2100 sq ft apt and it was nice for a while, but I prefer having bedrooms on the 2nd floor.
We built our "forever" house and it's actually 3 floors (including partially finished basement). I love it!

Last year we moved from a ranch to a two-story and they both have their plus sides. Overall I love having the bedrooms upstairs and our living spaces downstairs. So much nicer when LO goes to sleep plus its less to clean when people come over since its unlikely they would be upstairs for any reason (man I hate making the bed).

Technically we have a 4-story house (3 floors of living space plus a basement for laundry/storage). I guess I'm in the minority, but I prefer living vertically like this. We live in a city rowhouse and I like that our neighborhood is so dense which is the result of houses taking up so little land. However ... I will admit it's a pain when you're on the first floor and need something up on the third floor!

One story with a really smart layout. I've lived in a split where rooms were on four different levels, two story, and a one story. The layouts were not ideal in any, but I love the idea of everything being on one floor.

One story. We like to be able to keep an eye in the kids in their rooms and it's better for the dogs.
grapefruit / 4321 posts
Two story all the way!! I like having the private areas and public areas separate. I'm also a total freak about baby snatchers and wouldn't be comfortable with LO in a ground level bedroom.

We have a split level. So many stairs. So hard to do all day with a toddler and a baby. I would be happy with a well laid out Ranch.

I like having the "private"/bedrooms part if the house separate and I hate sprawl so two floors for me. I also think staircases are pretty - esp to decorate at Christmas! It also allows for more housing density which is a good thing in my book. With that said, ours is 2 plus basement which I also like.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
I've lived in both and prefer a 2 story. Even though our one story was large, I felt like we were always in each other's space.
eggplant / 11287 posts
1 story, hands down.
I am hoping our next house is a 1900/2000 sqft rambler. One stories are more expensive, though.

1 story. After years of stairs, I love being able to pull into the garage or parking spot, walk straight into my house and not deal with stairs.
pomegranate / 3127 posts
Definitely one story! My parents have a three story house and it's a royal pain. The outside stairs get icy in the winter and must be cleaned with a pick. Older relatives have trouble going upstairs to visit. And don't even get me started on toddlers and stairs... I avoided going to their house for a few weeks because DS was really into stairs and I'd spend the entire visit going up and down with him

Two story. We have a bungalow right now and bought a two story. I prefer bedrooms upstairs.

Not sure. I've never lived in a two story. I like the convenience of a 1 story, but it would be nice to have isolation on a 2 story to entertain on the first floor.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
One. I lived in a one story apt but it was on the second floor and I hated lugging groceries up to it. Now that we moved into a rambler with no stairs it's so nice. I don't have to worry about carrying dirty laundry downstairs.
Now, I haven't lived in a true two story house but it just seems so much easier to live on one floor. I did always think that our first house would be a townhouse but even I think I would not want to live in a townhouse. Aren't they 3 floors (basement/garage, main floor, bedrooms)?
I know others say it's nice to keep guests on the first floor and not have to clean the second floor but I just simply close the door on rooms I don't want my guests to see. Not a big problem to me. Plus, every now and then it's good to clean the whole house.
