DH and I would rather RENT.
We currently own our condo, but we're putting it up for rent, and renting our new place!
We like the flexibility renting allows. We want to be able to pick up and leave whenever we want!

I prefer to own, might as well get some equity from all that money I'm spending.

We rent but would rather own. At this time in our lives renting is what works for us as we don't know what our future holds, where we want to live permanently etc.
But I like the comfort of knowing we own a home and can do whatever we want with it.
I think what I would actually prefer is that we could afford double what we pay so that we could get a nicer place then I might not mind. Your new place sounds sooo fabulous I would love to rent something like that

Right now I'd rather be renting since we are wanting to sell our house and move, but the market around here is crap right now.

I love owning our house. Granted we are in a new home, so other than a little finishing work we aren't sinking money into repairs or anything like that, just basic maintenance. I love building equity, and putting money towards ourselves, rather than handing it to someone else.

For right now, I prefer to rent. We live in the city and don't want to move just yet, but within a few years we will want to have a big backyard and more space than we could have in the city. At that point, we will probably (hopefully) buy a house, but for now, renting is a much better option.

I like tearing down walls too much to rent. We're renting now and it's driving me nuts. We've been house hunting for over a year and I find it so frustrating.

I have never owned but it seems so nice! I've never been able to paint the walls or put up nice permanent things.

Own. Rent is way more than we'd pay for a mortgage, and I feel like we are flushing our money down the toilet. There are conveniences to it, but I also hate working with our landlord, and I don't feel like it is totally OUR house.

Own. In MI, it doesn't make sense for rent.... if I was single and living in the city -- def rent and have the mobility/flexibility!

We tried selling our condo and renting because it was cheaper at the time...OMG it was a nightmare! It is really hard going back to not having control over things, especially in a building. It was so bad that we lived in two rentals, and then ended up buying again less than a year after we sold!

I really have no preference...in NYC buying is often prohibitively expensive, so we are renting!

Another city dweller that won't give it up right now. We owned a house, moved away to live there and hated it, moved back to the city and sold the house.

I'd prefer to own, especially where we are living right now. Makes no sense to rent here.

we just bought a house in march, and we love being homeowners! we didnt like the idea that we were not investing when we were renting. and besides our mortgage is the same as our rent was and we have nicer bigger house!

We own and it's a good feeling, and good tax write-off. But, now that our building is being SUED I have to say I wish we were renting

At one point I would like to own, but that seems very far off. I would just like to be able to really personalize our home (like adding a wall) which I can't do in a rental. I think we're going to be moving several more times in the next few years so we'll be renting.
@sloaneandpuffy: sued?

@Baby Boy Mom: yes, living in Mex I'm sure you'll understand how screwed up it is that a guy who used to work for our condoadministration company (outsourced, in other words), is now able to sue us (and probably win if we don't settle) for wages he claims HIS company didn't pay him.

Didn't vote because I have never owned (yet.) We want to own but I do have some reservations about it because like you, I appreciate the flexibility allowed by renting! Also there are so many things to worry about with owning..when you rent, you just tell your landlord when something goes wrong!

@sloaneandpuffy: Oh no! Sorry to hear! Our good friends are restaurant owners and were telling us about waiters that don't show up and then sue them for not being paid! Craziness! Sometimes this country just dumbfounds me...sorry you're going through this!
