attractive.
i know it sounds shallow, but when you're attractive, people think you're talented anyways.
it's awful, but a lot of times it is hard to get anywhere with your talent if you're not attractive as well.

Talented - without question.

Honestly, I would want my son to be talented and my daughter to be attractive. I just think in this society, attractiveness goes a long way for women. Whether it's mating or career, we unfortunately live in a world where looks matter, especially for women. Sad but true.

i think the concept of talentedness is kind of a weird thing as well. i am a trained classical pianist and a singer/vocal performer. most people consider that "talent."

on the other hand, my husband does not believe he is talented, and his mom has even said that he does not really have any special talents. however, he is the most handy person i have ever met. he can literally fix anything, whether it's a car, a piece of jewelry, an old washing machine, or an antique chandelier. he is amazing...and although most people don't call him talented because his not musical or athletic...i think it's a talent.

talented, fo sho. attractiveness is something that ebbs & flows depending on who is viewing you, anyway. I'd rather have a talented kid & raise them to be respectful, kind, courteous, etc b/c good qualities like that always make someone more attractive to me, personally. but no amount of training can make someone more talented, though it can hone the talent already present.

Is being smart a talent?

talented - but I'd most want them to be smart (not sure if that's included in "talent").

I wouldn't want my kid to get ahead based on their looks, that doesn't do anyone any favors. Besides, you can fake attractiveness; you can't fake talent or smarts as easily.

@artbee: @mrbee: Kim K and her mom are freaking genius! You know her name's linked to.. DOZENS of products/companies? She started off selling things on ebay too.

I'd rather my kids be attractive than talented. You can live life successfully without singing/acting/painting/drawing well, etc.

@Rubies: I wouldn't consider intelligence a "talent."

@Rubies: HAHA. I'm not super talented either. I'm just okay at everything--art, music, cooking, etc.

@banana: I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don't consider myself that attractive, but I found someone who thinks I'm beautiful. Really, don't you ever see a couple where one of them is very good looking and the other is.... not?

@artbee: Oh yeah. Totally. I always see couples where one of them is very good looking and the other isn't. Most of the time (based on my experience) it's the woman that has the slight edge over the man (just based on what I've seen).

@photojane: I totally agree with you that I don't want my children taking shortcuts either. But if any shortcuts/opportunities WERE presented to my children (whether it's due to attractiveness/talent/whatever) I would encourage them to seize it and make the most of it. I certainly wouldn't expect them to solely ride on being attractive. Since this is about talent vs attractiveness, I would totally choose attractiveness. If the question was talented/hard working vs attractive/lazy, I would definitely choose talented/hardworking over attractive/lazy. Like @andrea said, if they could be smart & good looking, I would totally go for that! I'm hoping at least for one of the two! =)

@photojane: I see what you're saying. I was kind of thinking about talent along the lines of someone who can sing or play piano or cook really well. I wasn't thinking about it in terms of intelligence or hard working. I'd rather my child be attractive and not necessarily have any specific "talent". But if I had to choose attractive vs smart, I'd go for smart!

But anyhow, that's just me. I'm sure tons of people would totally disagree.
