Personally I think there are too many chemicals involved, but I don't even get them for myself! However, to each his own. I probably don't have enough information to judge, anyway. I'm sure my family does some things that other parents would think are questionable.

@Mrs. Jacks: I think for a very special occasion (i.e. family wedding) it could be a treat where she gets to spend time with the ladies as a "big girl". On a regular basis or as a kids party I think it is a little mature and not necessary at that age.

ETA: even for special occasions I think the mani is enough.... the pedi seems too much

@Mrs. Jacks; If it were me, if it was a CLOSE friend of my daughter's (i.e. a "best") and if I knew she would be sad to not be included, I would allow her to go (Ellie, not Lorelei, obviously). If it was just a less special friend or she were under about age three where distraction and age lead to not caring as much about that sort of thing, I would politely decline, but still give a birthday present to that friend at another time, and plan another outing or activity that the girls could do together at another time.

I don't think I'd be up for that unless I knew they were using all safe polishes and not sitting in a salon for hours. I'd be ok with it if it were at the friends house and painting each others nails.

I am in the minority, but I wouldn't have any issue with it.

I don't really agree with it, especially because the salons usually smell like chemicals and I don't want to expose my daughter to it. But, if they want to paint their nails while at a friends house, I'm totally fine with that.

I don't get mani/pedis myself because the smell gives me migraines. So no, I don't want her near those chemicals. I have piggy paint which is natural and safe, and they have fast drying for kids and pets so ill eventually get that for lo.

I always went with my mom, we took my nieces, and I was just talking to my mom the other day about how excited we are to take Sadie for her first little mani pedi. I think it's adorable & don't see the issue. There are so many worse things.

@zippylef: at our salon the kids don't get the traditional mani pedi! They get the kiddy version -- they get to sit in the chair just like mom & get some lotion put on & then have their nails painted. Most kids' feet wouldn't reach the foot spa!

I don't see a problem with it, that being said I have a boy, so maybe it would be different if I had a girl!

The only thing I would have a problem with is the price. I'd do it at home for her, but salons are expensive.

if it's an occasional thing, like for a party, i wouldn't have a problem with it. but it's not something i would do on a regular basis. part of the fun of being a kid is getting to do "adult" things every once in a while.

I think a mani-pedi party is better than a mom taking her very young daughter to get manis and pedis regularly. If it were a one-time thing, like a grown-up tea party (for a birthday), I kind of get it, because some little girls are really into that stuff.

But I kind of think the same thing about hair and little girls. I know some moms (not close friends, more...friends of friends) who started highlighting or perming (back in the day) the hair of their daughters when they were prettty young and that just baffles my mind. One lady I knew was so obsessed with keeping her daughter's hair blonde that she started this whole process of sun-in, then highlights, and eventually full bottle color when her daughter was 4! That's just disgusting to me--for a lot of reasons, but mainly I feel like she was already teacher her daughter that her natural color wasn't "good enough". yuck

I would totally bring my girl with me, as long as she was old enough to sit still and enjoy it; and as long as it was cheap for her!! Haha

The two spas I go to don't smell chemically at all, and whenever I've seen kids in there, the staff treats then really specially; getting them a water in a "fancy" cup, giving them a gentle little massage, etc. Always looks like the moms and daughters (and sometimes sons) are having a blast!

@yoursilverlining: omg - that sounds SO cute! I always *wished* my mom was into girly stuff and wanted to spend bonding time like that together! She was totally the opposite!

@shopaholic: it is really cute! For kids, it's basically just a little hand massage with lotion, polish and nail stickers. My mom wasn't girly either and I didn't get a mani or pedi until I went on my own in my 20's; I enjoy them sooooooo much!!!

It really isn't my kind of thing to begin with, I wouldn't want it to become an expectation. I hate how salons smell and usually get a headache from it, so I wouldn't want my toddler exposed to that.

I'm fine with painting nails at home with the safer polishes as a treat if asked or for a special occasion, but like mentioned above, kids are only innocent to appearances for so long. I think I got my first nail polish at 6-7 years old, and I've still never had a salon mani/pedi.

No judgment on those who do, it's just not for us.

I know. A few of my friends go to the nail salon with their daughters and get mani pedis together now. I think it's OK for a special treat, like a bday party.....maybe. But I'd be worried that she would start begging for mani pedis all the time. So it's not something that I have started doing with her yet.
