Would you visit a newborn with...

Would you go visit a friend with a two week old baby with your LO, if your LO had a 99.2 temp and clear runny nose?

Supposed to go and meet our friends 2 week old baby tomorrow. C has had a very mild runny nose, totally clear, for a few days. Today she has felt slightly warm so took her temp and it was 99.2. She is acting completely fine, doesn't seem to feel sick at all.

DH could go alone and bring our gift, not a big deal (his best friend is the dad). If it was an older baby I wouldn't hesitate but she's so little.

Thoughts?

I'd at least check with the Mama (or the dad). I wouldn't make the call myself.

I probably wouldn't at that young age. It'd probably be fine but I think it'd just cause worry.

@Jess1483: I am sure dad would say fine, but that doesn't mean I should go. I don't want to put the mom in an awkward position. I'll see how C is in the morning but if she has any elevated temp I think I will send Dh alone. Normal temp but runny nose maybe I will check with the mom. And not let C touch the baby or anything of course.

And this is why sometimes I have to ask HB. I mentioned it to DH and he was like, huh? Why?

Boo, I wanted to see them. But I very much do NOT want to get her sick. At least I put together a cute gift to send with DH.

I am not a safety parent, but I wouldn't with a temp or a cold. A friend of mine brought hers over with runny noses when mine was 6 days old, and my toddler got a horrible cold that made a difficult transition even worse. I think whether you ask depends on your relationship with the mom - I would have said "no" with no hesitation had I been asked.

No, I would rearrange the visit. Even if it were an older baby, I like to give parents the choice whether to have my sick kid over, and I really appreciate it when others let me know their kid is sick before a visit.

@Rockies11: I normally wouldn't consider this a temp, really, but when it's related to a teeny baby... It is. You all are right.

I would reschedule because it's better to be safe than sorry. I would think the new mom would appreciate you making the decision instead of putting her on the spot to say don't come or not.

No, sorry. As a mom of a newborn I personally didn't want any children visiting my new baby. As a worried FTM I probably would have had a panic attack if one with a runny nose and low grade temp came over. Better to be safe and leave the little one home with daddy.

The low fever actually may have just been from running around (forehead one, she felt cooler later). But the runny nose has been there for a few days.

It's funny, now I would definitely say come on over, since my LO is almost two and exposed to much worse every time she picks up trash at the park. I almost forgot how tiny newborns are and how incredibly fragile they seem. Glad I remembered in time.

The bummer is we were going to go last week when everyone was 100% healthy, but the timing didn't work out. Oh well, I'll see her soon enough. DH will send my best wishes.

No I would not, and I wouldn't put it on the newborn's parents to decide either. They may feel bad saying no to you. Just have DH drop off the gift or wait a week or two to go over.

@Foodnerd81: I would totally be cool with you all still coming, but I am super laid back. So, I guess you Should check with the mom. I would probably hesitate to go only because I wouldn't want to be seen as "that" mom if I knew the new mom was more germaphobic than I.

I may be an outlier here but I'd be livid if even just your DH went since he could be carrying it. I mean if a newborn gets a mild fever, they have to get a spinal tap!

@raintreebee: well, the toddler doesn't even have a cold. It's a runny nose that could well be allergies since she has no other symptoms. (Though I personally don't think of a 99 temp as a fever at all, in the absence of other symptoms). So I think if DH washes his hands well and doesn't do anything stupid they will be fine. The dad is a teacher and I'm sure is exposed to more germs every day when he goes to work.
Not to say I don't think 99 degrees in a newborn isn't scary, just that in a toddler it could mean she was running around too much. C and I will stay home but i think DH is safe.

@Foodnerd81: sorry. Didn't mean to sound judgy. Just what my reaction would be. And I'm not saying my reaction would be totally rational, but new moms can get crazy. If it were me, I'd have my husband check with his friend first just in case they are as crazy as me. But maybe your husband has a good idea of how his friend would react.

I would definitely be upset (and I'm even aware it would be irrational!) if you brought the toddler. Just new mom worries!

No, I wouldn't go. I just wouldn't want to take the chance that *my child* got a newborn sick. Any elevated temperature at all would make me uncomfortable.

I would've checked with the mom. 99.2 is *not* a fever. She may have appreciated you skipping the visit but it doesn't sound like your DD is that sick. I can see I'm in the minority though

I'd skip it.
I had a friend bring her toddler to meet the baby when she was five weeks. Turns out she had missed daycare that week for vomiting and diarrhea. That was five months ago and I'm still livid.

@oliviaoblivia: uh yeah, vomiting and diarrhea that week are not cool. I'd be mad too.

I'm remembering we went to a bday party when c was about 6 weeks old. She was in her car seat or the moby on me the whole time, but still got a tiny little cold after. I remember how crazy I was about that, even I am the one who brought her to the party.

I probably wouldn't just because I know how paranoid mothers can be about getting their newborns sick (and I don't blame them!).

@aprild: yeah, exactly. DH went and met the baby. C and I hung out at home and I know it was the right move. Glad I remembered that a runny nose is actually a much bigger deal with you are talking about a two week old!
