2+! I wouldn't want to live in a ranch. We live in a 5 level split right now and I really like it.

I was adamant that we buy a center hall colonial and guess what, the style of the house ended up being what I despise the most, a raised ranch (playroom on the garage level with living and bedrooms on the main level).
Location trumped style for me.

@Mae: I live in a split too, just 4 levels though! I love it because each staircase is pretty short. Growing up I was annoyed at climbing up a lot of stairs to get to my room! Before we bought this house, we put an offer on a ranch though; if done right it's really nice too and I def don't mind not having to climb any stairs.

"super" ranch with a full basement. I want it to by my forever home, and I have really bad knees with the docs telling me knee replacements are in my future, so I want to be able to access my entire house easily!

I like having two levels too. I don't worry so much about interrupting sleep when the bedrooms are upstairs. And i like the curb appeal of them better too.

Ranch!! I wanted a two story and we bought a ranch. Ill never buy another style if I can help it. So so awesome, bedrooms are all close, basement is the playroom with my sewing room down there too.

My ideal would be a modern open two floor. If I could do ANYTHING... I have some plans from an architect that has an indoor waterfall! (open plan, two floors, lots of windows/ glass, tall ceilings).
BUT my beloved FLW designed some amazing one story homes...

Multiple floor levels. I like having all the bedrooms upstairs and the main living down, plus we have a basement which is an added bonus.

I like ranch houses for their practicality. In my dreams I'd choose to live in a Palladian villa, and those have multiple floors.

I wanted a multi story home (I grew up in one) but we bought a single story and I love it!

My ideal floor plan would have laundry on the same floor as our bedrooms.

we thought we wanted 1, but we're in a 1 floor now and not a fan!
the forever house we're building is 2 floors + a finished basement.

I prefer 2/3 story. Ive always dreamed of a big old house with an amazing staircase.

In general I perfer a two story. But tonight we are actually going to look at a one story (although the bonus room is up a half level, above the garage) and I'm being open minded because I really like the house.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I have laundry on the same floor as the bedrooms (2nd floor) and I hate it! I'm always running up and down the stairs to move it from washer to dryer or to check on how dry it is...and if I want to fold laundry in front of the tv at night, I have to lug it downstairs and then back up again It bugs me!
I prefer a multi-story home. I like having bedrooms separated from the main living area.

2.5/3 with a finished basement.
Living floor
Kids rooms
Master retreat
and a basement for recreation & craft rooms

@chopsuey: what don't you like about it?
We have 2 floors + finished basement, but it's kind of a pain with young kids. It won't matter too much once the baby can safely navigate the stairs, though, so just a pain in the short term.

3, including finished basement. I grew up in a ranch and prefer having bedrooms on an upper floor. I want a center hall colonial.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@Andrea: not a fan of the floor plan, and sound carries like crazy. once the kids go to bed we have to stay quiet because M's room is by the dining/kitchen/living room.
eta: loved it while I was pregnant with J and in major pain though.

One!! We are in the process of buying a house and I'm so excited that it will be all one floor! I hate going up and down stairs with laundry and stuff right now, and I've noticed that I let things get messier if I have to take stuff up or down to put it away.
blogger / coconut / 8306 posts
@tinyperson: I'd want it on the same floor as bedroomsso I DONT have to lug it up and down. I fold clothes on my bed while watching tv!

We have one now and it has been nice for baby and toddlerhood because I don't have to worry about stairs. If/when we buy a home, I would like two stories.

I adore the look of two story inside and out with open floor plan, but after living in one for 3 years, I'm not a fan of two story functionally.
My dream home is a craftsman/cottage style with stairs to an open loft overlooking main living area.
watermelon / 14206 posts
Ranch, for sure. It's the only thing we're considering while we're house hunting. I like that DS can go play in his bedroom and I can be in the kitchen and living room and still be nearby. It's also better for the dogs, since they're both breeds that are prone to hip problems.

I'd prefer a two story home. I like the separation of the bedrooms from the living space. We own a ranch now, but want our forever home to have two stories.
nectarine / 2274 posts
We are currently in a 2 floors house which is pretty common in our area. I would love a 1 floor house so I don't have to worry about lo climbing up and down the stairs.
coconut / 8430 posts
I like 2 floors probably because I grew up in one! I just like that there is a clear separation between bedroom space and living space.
kiwi / 551 posts
We didn't have a preference, but our current house is single story and I love it with little ones. No stairs to worry about. I grew up in a large single story.
coconut / 8472 posts
I live in a 4 story house right now and I'm so over it. I dream of moving to a ranch, but they're not real common around here. My ideal would be a floor plan with the master bedroom on one side of the house, and the other bedrooms on the opposite side. Everything would be close and easily accessible, but we wouldn't be right on top of the kids.
pomelo / 5469 posts
2 or 3. I'd love to have a floor in the loft/roof area with the sloping roof. My parents have a single story house and it works great for them and it's nice but it feels weird not to have an upstairs.
grapefruit / 4136 posts
@Mrs. Jump Rope: @tinyperson: we have 2nd floor/bedroom level laundry and I am OBSESSED. I will never go back. I don't fold most of our laundry so I can just pop into our closets, hang it up and be done!
We have 2 full stories and a full (mostly) finished basement. I love it! We had a 70's style split level before and it was just not functional. Our tv room is in the basement so we can watch movies after J goes to bed and not worry about sound. The only thing I don't like is that we keep our dogs in the basement (major shedding) and I feel bad when I'm doing housework and am not spending more time with them. They're my buddies.

We are in a tiny ranch and are looking to buy a 2 story home STAT! The living and bedrooms ate too close....sounds carry.
pineapple / 12053 posts
love one floor. hate stairs after living in apartments for years.
nectarine / 2466 posts
Having bedrooms on their own floor upstairs is a must for me. I'm a really light sleeper and I like the bedrooms way away from house traffic, tv, etc. Especially as I sometimes do shift work and have to sleep during the day. We were lucky and found that in our price range and neighbourhood.
