Been in the car for over an hour and a half in traffic already and not even at my ILs house yet. The drive always makes us a little jealous of SIL who lives a few miles away from her parents. They ALWAYS help out with her Childcare from picking kids up and dropping them off for school, babysitting for nights our, etc. I'd consider moving closer for help, but DH wouldn't. What about you? Did you move or would you to your parents for more help?

I would not. My parents have done their time raising kids and are older so I want them to just enjoy retirement and grandkids without feeling too obligated. I think being closer for visits is amazing, but I wouldn't rely on mine (or his) for childcare.

We bought a house near my inlaws for so our kids could grow up minutes away from family. They don't babysit or help too much yet but it is nice being nearby. I wish my parents lived closer!

We're already less than 20 minutes from either set of parents. it's pretty nice, but it's not something that's holding us back when choosing the town we want to move to. Proximity to DH's company is more important for us.

We are moving to within a half hour drive of my parents house before LO arrives. I'll be a SAHM so it's not for childcare reasons, but so that I have some company/support from trusted family if I need it. Plus, I want them to be regulars in LO's life when LO is young.

My parents live 2 minutes away & my IL's live 8 minutes away. It's wonderful!

We were facing a move earlier this year but once we found out we were pregnant we decided to stay in our current city close to family. My parents are SO excited for their first grandbaby - I won't have to worry about babysitters and my mom has offered to watch the baby 2 days a week when I start back again at work. very grateful for the help!!

well, we haven't moved away from being near my parents although I want to, just for the babysitting help. Honestly I was hoping my mom would watch her two days a week rather than her being in daycare, but she claims to be too busy... but the date nights out when she watches her are a big help!

We moved next door to my parents when I was 8 months pregnant. We all get along and quite frankly it's been a blessing all around. My parents watch DS a couple days a week while I work and my son has already learned so much from my parents. They love having such an active relationship with their grandchild. We're all thriving with this arrangement.

@Mrs. Fox: that would be my ideal situation! we both get along with each other's families, so it would be a wonderful setup for us.

I would definitely move closer to my family. Right now we live too far away.

I would love to, but it's just not practical. I would want to live closer to my family, but there's no way or how we could move back to my hometown. I guess we could move near DH's family, but then he would probably be working at a job he hates.

My parents are 45 mins away. I would move closer to them in a heartbeat, if they didn't live so far from the city.
ILs are 4 hours away and that is close enought for me.

I was certainly looking to get a house close to my parents when we were looking, but we ended up about 40 minutes away. I think it;s way too far, but we couldn't afford anything we wanted any closer, and didn't think it was *that* far. My uncle is a 5 minute walk, and I love how much my parents and siblings are there, and sort of regret giving up the closeness for the house we wanted.

It's not really an option for us without giving up our current jobs, but if it were I would seriously consider it.

No. I don't want to return to my hometown for work or living. I like it, but not enough to want to make it a residence. I also don't think that my DH wants to return to his because both of us would make significantly less or not employed as well.

Noooo. Living near MIL would make for awful work commutes and living near my parents means their small town hick life!

No, I wouldn't move closer to my mom for childcare help because that would be horrendous for DH's commute. I hope she moves closer to us though

We live less than a 10 minute drive from both my parents and IL's and it's an awesome setup. Love having family close by and I'd hate living far away

We've always considered moving out of state, and my parents talk about retiring in the south, so I guess by default we wouldn't!

I'm pregnant and we are considering moving back to our hometown to be close to my parents (we currently live a two-hour plane ride away). We want our kids to be around them, and my mom has said a bunch of times in the past few years that she would love to take care of our kids before they're old enough to go to school. I get along with my parents really well so it would be great, and preferable to daycare!

Definitely work commute trumps family distance!

I moved halfway across the country to be closer to my family after getting pregnant with my first LO. It wasn't so much about childcare but being close to family (childcare is a fringe benefit)...
