Fake until the kids are old enough to help us pick one out! I loved helping my dad pick out real trees when I was growing up and hope to implement that same tradition.

The fire hazard of a real tree totally freaks me out. We are getting a new fake tree this year... We still have one from DH's bachelor days at the moment. It's uh, sparkly and black lol

It will always be fake in our house bc DH is severely allergic to pine.

Real! I never had a real Christmas tree growing up and only the last few years of living at home did we have a fake one (mainly for my younger sis since she believed in Santa). Ever since owning our home, we have always had a real tree. It feels more like Christmas at home with one, and LO helped picked one out last year when he was 1.5 years old. Can't wait to go again this year and set up our tree.

Has to be real. The small amount of extra clean up and care is completely worth it. It is so much more fun picking a unique tree every year than to assemble the same plastic one.

Whoah! Surprised that fake is leading the poll. Always real. We've made a tradition of going to cut ours down and get a beer at a local brewery afterwards.

Growing up we always had fake trees. The year before last, DH and I went out and got my first real tree (DH always grew up with real ones) and it was the best! But we left it up until like March (legit, baaaad idea). Oh the mess. Oh the misery. We were stepping on needles well into last summer. Last year we just got a fake one because of the cost. But THIS year is our first year as a married couple. And the tree farm we go to gives away a free tree your first Christmas after you get married. There's no way I'm passing up a free tree

REAL! Omg real real real. There is nothing I love more than the smell of a real Xmas tree.

Real trees, for us. We make a day out of driving to the mountains to cut our own tree down. I'm not sure if we're going to get a full size tree this year, as DD may be crawling, and I worry about her pulling the ornaments in the bottom branches, and having it topple over her.

Real! I can't imagine not having a real tree. We have a fake one too, that we put up in the back den so that we can put it up early. That's the only downside to a real tree, that you pretty much have to wait until the second week in Dec if you want it to stay fresh. Best of both worlds if you do both though. I can't wait til LO is a little older and then I'll put a mini artificial tree in her room too!

We bought a fake one last year and was supposed to buy a real one, but ended up skipping it. This year we'll try to have both.

My husband loves a real tree with real candles, but I told him unless he's busting out the vacuum cleaner on a daily basis, it's going to be a fake one.
I just can't be bothered with the whole transport and removal aspect...if someone delivered to my house and set it up, MAYBE!

we've had real trees because: (1) they smell nice and (2) we don't have room to store a fake tree. i've also wondered whether a fake would be worth it this year because LO is going to get his hands on the tree, but the lack of storage space means we'll be getting a real one and trying to watch LO like a hawk.

@birdofafeather: My sister and I shared a small apartment when I was in college, and we did that exact thing in our living room. We always got compliments on it! And it literally takes 5 minutes to do.
And we always have a real tree. Nothing beats picking out the perfect one every year and the smell!

We've always had a fake one, but would love to start getting a real tree soon! I think going out to pick the "perfect" tree as a tradition is awesome. I just hate the fact they shed so cleaning is a PIA! Ugh!

DH is allergic to real Christmas trees - a horrible rash all over his skin if he's in the same room as one :'( Fake trees for the rest of my life...

@shopaholic: We got a fake from Frontgate. And it's the BOMB. LOL. It's pre-lit. Worth.every.penny.

We only had real until I moved out. My husband doesn't like real trees, though (he grew up with fake) so I put up our fake tree and he sprays the real tree smell on it.

My husband grew up on a Christmas Tree farm so when I wanted to get a fake one he laughed at me! haha
We had a real one for a few years and then when my son came along I was to scared to have a huge tree that might fall on him so we did a tiny fake 3 foot tree =(
After that we went fake - just easier in my opinion!

I'm SO TORN. We always had real growing up, but the convenience of a fake tree is so appealing. I want to take Sadie to pick out/cut down a tree from a farm, but I also don't really want to deal with the clean up.

We always had real, but I invested in a nice fake one last year (prelite) and I just love it. I hate messing with lights, so the fact I can just plug it in makes me happy

I had fake growing up, and DH always had real. When we moved in together, DH own and we got real. Last year our tree was terrible and left an awful mess, so this year we are getting a fake one!

Always real! We had real growing up and DH had fake, I converted him as soon as I moved in. I love the smell and the feel, and the whole experience!

We go searching for a real tree every year. It's all about the smell

I always had real ones growing up, and in my opinion are the best kind of Christmas tree.
DH and I have had the same fake one for 3 years now, and it kills me a little inside each time we pull it out for the holidays.

@boots: same! Always had real growing up. DH had a fake one when I met him, so we use that. *dies*
However, I want a new faux one. I want prelit because stringing that thing with lights is a bitch!

I love real trees but it's just not very practical for 2 kids in the house (pine needles!!). So we have a fake one with LED lights. We'll get real ones once the kids are older and learn not to touch the tree!

We had a real tree our first Christmas together but I then woke up to a weta (see photo below) crawling across me that had obviously hitched a ride. They're a protected species here so we can't fumigate any future trees - fake it was from there on out!

Interesting responses and votes! I'm thinking real this year, since K is still relatively immobile, since it sounds like toddler-years kind of require fake trees!
@SweetMamaM: Blech!!! We had a cricket live in ours last year and it drove me batty every single night till we tossed the tree.

We always had a real tree when I was a kid. When I lived by myself during college, I even bought a small, real tree because I'm a nerd a love to decorate for Christmas...and the smell...I love the smell. Since DH and I have lived together, we've had real trees. He also grew up having real trees and loves their smell, like me.
