.. do you eat the bread or toss it?
My husband refuses to eat bread after the 'sell by' date. Just this weekend he pitched a full loaf because the sell by date was the day before.
What would you do?

Ditto! No matter the sell by date, if there's no mold, I'm eating it! The "sell by" date indicates what date the grocery store should "sell" it by, which implies that it can be consumed after it's sold. At the same time, I understand the "ick" factor if your husband is convinced that it shouldn't be eaten. To each his own!

Just the sell by date is totally fine.
Use by is a different story.

My husband does the exact same thing.
I watched a segment on the news about this very topic hoping to convince my husband that it didn't mean that the food suddenly expired, but it didn't convince him, largely because the issue is that there's no consistency on the dates, even in the same brands.

I am incredibly paranoid about sell by/expiration dates on things like dairy and meat, but for bread? As long as it doesn't have visible mold or smell musty I'd definitely eat it! I actually never even think to look at the sell by date on bread products...

I do the visual inspection and a sniff test. Sometimes bread will smell extra yeasty? when it's starting to go bad before the mold appears. It might still be safe in that state, but I don't like it.
We have tortillas in a container on our counter that are easily a month past expiration but are still totally fine.

If it's just one or two days past the 'sell by' date, I check for mold and eat it if it's ok.
Keeping bread in the fridge can prolong its life by another week or so.

Eat it! (as long as it wasn't stale or moldy)
I think Consumer Reports or somebody did a study and found that most foods are still good well past their expiration dates, let alone their sell by dates!

My H is the same way. I get so annoyed. If it's not moldy/very stale, I eat it! He throws so much good food away. Like the other day, I mentioned that I had half a red onion left from a recipe I made earlier in the week that we could use for dinner. And he was like, "Just buy a new one, it's like less than a dollar." So not the point, I just hate wasting food.

@looch: I saw the same segment and it did convince my husband somewhat. Wasted food drives me crazy!
There are no standards for the sell by, use by, best by, dates!
Use your senses. If it looks weird, smells weird, or tastes weird, throw it out. If not, I'm sure it's fine!

If it's not moldy I eat it. Sell by dates aren't expiration dates.

If there's no mold it's good to go. Honestly, we have totally eaten non-moldy slices of bread that are among moldy slices. I'm not sure what protocol is on that, but we haven't gotten sick from it lol.

Umm, even if there was a little bit of mold on it on the crust or whatever I'd just cut it off and eat it. I do the same with cheese. I'm gross, I know!

Nope, not stale or moldy!
@pinkcupcake: @blackbird: he thinks the idea of putting bread into the refrigerator or freezer is absurd! lol I don't get it...
I ask this question because he thinks that everyone throws out bread at the 'sell by' date and looks at me like I'm crazy for wanting to use it. He also doesn't believe that people put bread in the refrigerator or freezer.

I would eat it, make french toast out of it and he won't know the difference

@rachiecakes: We put ALL our bread in the the fridge!
If it's not moldy, I eat it. In fact, I don't think I pay much attention unless it is moldy, then I check!

@bunnylove08: er, I don't cook much, but he does! I guess I have no say in how fresh food is then? haha

@rachiecakes: I would put the bread in another bag that has a different sell by date just to mess with him LOL

There are lots of uses for "a day old bread". I would still toast it and make a sandwich if there is no mold.

Eat it... I'd eat it probably up to a week after "sell by." Or freeze it. Sell by is not the expiration date! Usually when I buy meat, the sell-by date is the actual date I buy it, or the day after. So by his reasoning I would never get to consume anything.

I'm eating that bread if it's not moldy.
My DH used to be like that too until I convinced him that the sell by date is not the expiration date and companies have to be conservative with the dating in order to protect themselves. He used to waste a lot of perfectly fine food and it drove me crazy to see waste like that!

I eat bread if it isn't moldy. I never even knew there was a date on bread.. lol

If it's still soft, eat it now. If it's getting a bit stale, freeze and use it for stuffing next month...or make bread pudding!

If it's one day and it's not moldy or stale I would eat it. And I'm someone who won't touch meat or dairy for one day BEFORE the sell by date. Bread is fine!
