I'm thinking about asking for a zoo membership for my baby's first birthday. Do people with 1 to 2 year olds think this is something he'd enjoy or should I hold off on this to next year in the 2 to 3 range? We live 20 minutes from the zoo and I think it would be a nice change of pace to walk around there on week days when it isn't too crowded, I'm just not sure if he'll be excited about animals in that age range.
He does love the dog and cat though if that is any indication!

I'm interested in hearing the responses. Thinking about getting one myself but the zoo is like 35 mins away and not sure if it would be worth it. But at least it would get us out of the house and doing something. I am struggling to find ways to entertain DS lately!

How many visits will make it worth the $ for the membership?
We got a family zoo pass when LO turned 1 and have visited only a couple times but it's paid for itself so I think it's worth it. We don't feel rushed to see the exhibits so the time spent is much more relaxed. Our membership also allows for discounts on food (though we usually go in between meals or bring snacks) but it's a nice perk.
LO is starting to recognize some of the animals so it's nice way to engage her in talking/mimicking animal sounds.. Plus, certain areas are safe enough to just let her run around and get some of that toddler energy out! 
Ours is about a half hour drive away

My daughter has LOVED the zoo since infancy! My older daughter liked it, too, but not quite as much. My youngest is obsessed and constantly talks about the zoo and wanting to go and what she has seen there. I would go once to see what he thinks, and decide after that.

We have a zoo membership and my LO is only 5 months. It's totally worth it. It's more for us than her...it's nice to be able to get out of the house and walk around there. My LO does stare at the animals, though. She loves the fish and the giraffes.

We got one last year and DH and DS went all the time! (I was very pregnant and uncomfortable his summer, so I didn't go) DS loved it. He turned 1 in May 2013 and still loved it

Hmm, we've been to the zoo a few times with LO - a couple times around a year, and once when she was around 18 months. Although she enjoyed it at a year, she definitely got more out of it at 18 months. We will be buying a membership this year (she will be turning 2 next month).

We take DD to the zoo a lot when it's nice out because ours is free and in walking distance, so I say yes. The caveat is that I'm not sure she really cares all that much about the animals yet (at 13.5 months). I think she will before two though, and it's a nice outing for us both.

Yes! When DS was a baby, I got a zoo membership (he was free) and I went all the time...for about 2 years. He liked looking at the animals (I did, too!) and it was a nice way for me to take a walk regularly. At a year old, he was really into it!

Is there a play area that is suitable for your LO there? That can be worth it by itself!

Oh definitely!!! My LO is 15 months and he's loved it for awhile now! He just likes it more and more every time. Totally worth it IMO.

Extremely worth it. We got our first zoo membership when my daughter was still a baby. At that age, it was more for me to have a fun place to get out and get some exercise, but she got into it pretty quickly. Now at 28 months she asks to go weekly.

My LO loves the zoo for people watching. I don't think she has any idea there are animals there. We live close by so it's a fun place for play dates. Now that she understands pointing (since about 10 months) I think she'll have even more fun.
