@dc yoga bee: I work at a clinic and we tell our patients no fast needed for the 1 hour glucose, but for the 3-hour glucose, an 8-10 fast is done.

It frustrates me how all over the place this test is. My dr tells us to fast but I told her I was planning on eating boiled eggs or I will get sick, and she said that shouldn't give me a false positive, but don't tell the office when I come in or they will freak out. That drink on an empty stomach is naaaasty

@Astro Bee: not trying to *game* the system, just a simple question whether or not to fast. My only risk factor is race, so I'm actually not too concerned but, just wanted to hear other people's experiences since I haven't been able to get in touch with my practice.
@blackbird: I've tried calling and emailing the practice, but unless you're having a medical emergency they're not very good at getting back to you in a timely manner! Annd it's the holidays with office closures. I've also read discrepancies as to whether the one hour test is even an accurate indicator!
@mamasig @t.h.o.u. @Mrs. Pen: thanks!

I was told to fast for the 1 hr (and for my upcoming 6 wk pp check up). I too think that my # was so high bc I wasn't allowed to eat AND had to chug that whole thing!
I'm pretty sure I'm gonna eat some eggs and cheese this time around.

@DC Yoga Bee: I didn't mean to imply that you were trying to cheat the test, only that by not not altering your diet or fasting, you would get the most accurate result. I'm not sure why some people are advised to fast for this test, when others are not. But my doctor was very specific. My understanding is that if the 1 hr test is positive, they will do a 3 hr test, which is more accurate. I do wish you good luck with the test, and a happy holidays.

@dc yoga bee: I have to sit my one-hour test on the 8th of Jan and am not required to fast but it's tough because there's so little accurate info about the test and everywhere seems to have a slightly different testing procedure. I'm not interested in trying to trick the test but I would like to avoid a false positive if I can (and false positives are incredibly common!). My plan is to attempt some gentle exercise in the time between taking the drink and the blood draw. My logic tells me that if I have GD nothing I do is going to stop that showing up in the results.

@dc yoga bee: I was told not to fast and it's really difficult to drink that stuff anyway. You have to drink like 8-10 oz in 5 min and it's SUPER sweet and flavored so I think drinking it on an empty stomach would have make me puke. I would at least try to eat a little snack.

I fasted, just because I went in first thing. Failed and ended up having GD results with my 3 hr.

@dc yoga bee: I was told not to fast, but not to eat sugar or carbs that morning, only protein like an egg or some chicken. I wish I had brought a snack with me to eat after the test was up because by the time I left the office and got back to work I was feeling really shaky.

I fasted both times. Didn't pass the first one, barely, and passed the three hour test just fine.

I had to fast for the 1 hour test, passed it twice (i have 2 kids), but water was allowed, so I did drink lots of water. drinking too much water though right before you go in to test probably dilutes the drink, hence your pee.

If I am remembering correctly, I think I was told I didn't have to fast, but should avoid high carb foods. I fasted anyway and felt horrific afterwards...nausea, migraine, etc...not terribly surprising since big changes in blood sugar seem to trigger my migraines. I did pass the test though.
This time around, I plan to take the whole day off from work, just in case, and will eat a low carb breakfast.

I was told to fast before my one hour with Liam and I failed it. This time, she told me not to fast, so I had eggs for breakfast (avoided carbs and sugar) and I passed with flying colors. There is no way I'd make it to 1:30 without eating. I would definitely eat, but maybe try to list carbs and sugar.

I commented awhile ago, but I had to fast for both and was not allowed to have water either.

I did not have to fast for the 1-hour test. I did it a 3pm and my dr sprung it on me (it wasn't pre-arranged) so I couldn't have fasted or changed my eating for the day even if I wanted to. I ate normally for the day, including a late lunch at 2pm shortly before my drs appointment (cheese sandwich and a pear). I passed just fine. If dr said don't fast then I personally wouldn't fast or worry about what I eat...maybe just don't drink a soda or eat candy right before your appointment

I commented last year before my test with DD2-- I ate before the 1 hr both times and passed both times.

@dc yoga bee: My doctor told me to fast (including no water) for a few hours before drinking the sugary drink. But he also schedules the GD test appointments first thing in the morning. So basically I got up, got dressed, drank the sugar drink, got tested, and went to get a late breakfast.

@Kemma: fyi, they very specifically wouldn't allow me to move around much, and would have definitely been pissed if I deliberately exercised. That will alter the results for sure. And it's better safe than sorry. I was right on the border of passing, so I'm pretty sure I could have "fixed" it so I passed. But I would much rather deal with being treated like I had it when I didnt than not be treated properly if I did.
Also, the GD diet emphasizes balancing your sugar intake with plenty of protein, so a high protein meal before would probably make you more likely to pass.

I was told not to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the test. Luckily my test was in the morning.

Update: My test is Monday (with anatomy scan ), and finally got ahold of someone. The midwife told me to not eat anything sugary the morning of my test. They want to test from my baseline. So, a glass of orange juice may be how I *normally* eat for breakfast (it's not, thanks to morning sickness), but that would probably lead to a false positive adding the glucose drink ON TOP of that. They want to see how my body responds TO the glucose drink. I like how she explained it. I've been eating a high protein low sugar greek yogurt for breakfast, so I'll stick to that if I'm hungry.

No idea on the fasting - maybe skip the toast? - but bring your husband. I passed the one hour test but I couldn't walk my blood sugar was so low. I was so nauseous and there's no way I could have driven to get food. I'm so glad my husband was there.

@dc yoga bee: will you have the drink and then do the anatomy scan appt while you wait for the time to be up? That's better than having to just sit there thinking about how gross it was. And seriously bring snacks in your purse for after!!

@Anya: Yep, the receptionist did some serious scheduling. Arrive at 10:30, drink from lab at 10:40, anatomy scan at 11, draw blood at 11:40, OB 18 week check up at 11:45! We will have to watch clock closely in case I need to get up from anatomy scan to go downstairs to get my blood drawn if the tech isn't finished yet. That's the only drawback!

Okay, so I ended up fasting. Something just told me better safe than sorry. When I walked into the lab, the first thing they asked me is, "You did fast right?" Whew! The midwife told me I didn't have to fast. Glad I did anyways. They gave me the Orange drink, and I had 5 minutes to drink it. I thought it was pretty tasty myself. It tasted like sunkist. I finished it in 3 minutes and was then told not to have any water or food in the hour wait. I went upstairs to the sonogram apt, found out we are having a then went back downstairs for my blood draw. Easy peasy. Results just came in. Had to be under 135, mine were 107. Sweet!

@Torchwood: I did my one-hour test yesterday and did a few ankle exercises while waiting but it didn't help me, I did the two-hour test today and failed that too
