Dear God...

this makes me sick....

and yet my friends have had three miscarriages in a year and going to RE to figure out what is going on. I just don't understand the world at times.

Wow that is so aweful... She is definitely in my prayers.

DH read this the other night and got really upset. He sat and watched E sleep for half an hour.

ugh- I can't bring myself to read this article. Awful awful awful. Babies shouldn't be having babies.

I saw this on Nancy Grace last night...Not that it matters, but they are from Florida, and I have a theory (since living in FL for the past 2 years and being constantly baffled by people here) that all of the crazy/awful/belong in an asylum people live here.

On Nancy Grace, she said that the baby weighed over 9 lbs. How in the hell can a girl be pregnant with a 9lb baby and her mom not know she is pregnant??? I am 31 weeks, and the baby websites say my daughter weighs about 3.5 lbs in there - and it is beyond obvious that I am pregnant!!! I can't imagine what I would look like if she was almost triple the size she is right now. The story is just INSANE and doesn't add up. And of course, it's just gut-wrenching and unimagineable. I can see being 14 years old and scared or afraid of consequences, but even at 14 years old- you know the difference between right and wrong, murder and life. And you have to be pregnant for a LONG-ass time. The fact that this is how she dealt with the baby after having all that time to find another solution - she premeditated it for months.

@JHoller, I lived in FL for 1 year, and yes – the heat must get to people’s minds down there because it did feel like there was a lot of the cray-cray going around!

I know this isn’t a popular opinion; but she IS still a child. Her brain literally isn’t done developing so she doesn’t have all the forethought, options and rational thinking that an adult has. Yes she knows right from wrong, but I doubt she premeditated it for months, or is evil, or is a hateful person. She’s a kid and kids do stupid, impulsive things. That doesn’t excuse what she did, and it’s terrible and sad; but I also don’t think it’s that shocking that a child, faced with the mental and physical trauma of giving birth to a child after keeping the pregnancy a complete secret from her entire family would do something violent and extreme. I do feel badly for her. Stories like this are why I have absolutely zero issues with birth control (including the morning after pill) being available at schools without parental consent. If she came from a stable, loving, *involved* family; I doubt she would have ended up pregnant at 13 or 14, especially without anyone knowing, or frankly, caring about whether she was pregnant or not. What sort of situation is a kid living in when she can hide a pregnancy from family (which I call BS on), give birth inside the family home and no one knows anything?

So sad.

When I was in college, a freshman girl hid her pregnancy and gave birth in the dorm bathroom. No one knew she was pregnant. While she was in labor, she locked herself in a stall and a few concerned students checked on her as they were using the bathroom and she told them she was fine "just sick". She ended up giving birth and losing massive amounts of blood. By the time anyone found her, she couldn't be revived. She had no pulse and was not breathing. Both mother and baby ended up dying.

Very sad, it all could have been prevented if she only felt comfortable enough to tell someone.

Makes me ill.

Babies shouldn't be having sex, but it happens. I am sure there are some of us on this very board that had sex well before we really had any business doing so.

Children's brains aren't fully developed, so sometimes there really is a mental incapacity, so we should try to find out why things happen and put things in place to prevent them in the future. It's all so very easy to judge from behind a computer screen, but let's be honest here, I bet most of us really have no idea what we'd have done in that situation.

I'm not even going to read the article. I like to live in denial about these types of things.

And agreed... she's 14. I remember what I was like at 14 - you make fully conscious decisions. You don't think like a child anymore. In fact you spend those teenage years trying to prove you're an adult.

Wow! So many questions racing through my mind
How could her mom be in such denial? And not know that she was pregnant? And how could she have endured the pain of giving birth alone?

This is just morbid...

I agree with those that say that "she's only a child" isn't an excuse. If she is mature enough to be having sex, then she needs to be able to deal with the consequences. Shame on her parents for not realizing what was going on and supporting their daughter. And shame on our school systems for not teaching proper sex education as a mandatory class.

@Chastenet: In CA and some other states, you can drop off a newborn baby to a hospital or fire station within 72 hours of birth, no questions asked.

The sad thing is, moms still kill their babies in CA with this law available to help them. It's so sad
