I know its normal to be worried at this stage for speech development. LO has a list of words she can say but most often will just say 'da'. I tried to get her to say purple which I know she can say quite well but she just says da repeatedly. Its like she is too lazy to say the word. Anyone elses LO do the same thing?

My LO was the same way until 20 months!

Yup, J is 18 months and still only says mama dada and cat...and won't say anything on command. My dr set up a referral to a speech therapist because getting in takes about a year (Canada) - she wanted to be on top of it just in case. She said that while its considered a delay that we shouldn't worry yet and that we would reevaluate at his 2 year appt.

That sounds a lot like our son. He just turned 19 months, and 18 months seemed to be a month of saying random new words. However, he never would repeat most of these words! It's lately been mostly mama, dada, up, no, baaaa for baby, and braaa for brother. He is taking his time, and his dr isn't concerned.

My 18 month old is the same way. She just had her well visit last week and the doctor was pleased with her progress, so I'm trying not to stress. It's hard, though!

I guess its not that overly concerned because she does know quite a few words but chooses to us 'da' instead. Its frustrating! But of course I to hubby about it and he asked her to say purple and she said it no problem. Then proceeded to run around yelling purple about ten times. Ugh, what a stinker!

My son is quite similar. He says a lot of animal sounds and babbles quite a bit with a wide variety of sounds/consonants but he only uses a handful of words regularly. He much prefers using signs and gestures.
When he was 16 months I initiated a referral for a speech assessment and he will be assessed in January when he's 22 months. I've talked to many SLPs about my concerns and while all of them have said that I shouldn't worry and he seems on target, I wanted to be proactive and at least have his name on a list.

That sounds like my DD ... And then she had a language explosion a couple months later.

This thread has made me feel a lot better! My DD is 17 months and says less than 10 words regularly, some of which isn't even pronounced properly (chorgee for George, baba instead of bada).

My nephew does not say much at all but he babbles a fair bit. My SIL is not worried!

Same here! 20 months for DS was when the word explosion happened, hoping it's the same for DD.

Mine wasn't picking up more than a handfull of words at that point- a few months later he started rapidly picking them up, he's definitely hit the language explosion at 22-23 months.
