Is an initial 2-hour glucose test standard? I went for my glucose tolerance test this morning and it was a 2-hour test. One blood draw, drink nasty juice, next blood draw an hour later, followed by a third blood draw an hour after that. For my first pregnancy, I only had a 1-hour test. Anyone have an initial 2-hour test? Is it because I'm in the "advanced maternal" age group now that I had to have 2-hour as opposed to 1-hour? Just curious if anyone else had a 2-hour test!

I e heard that some places do only the 2 hour because it’s more accurate. Maybe you won’t have to do another one if you get a high result.

My OB did the two hour. She said recent studies show it was much more accurate than the one hour, and just as accurate at the three hour, and it's one and done. So, if you pass you're good and if you fail (one high number) you're diagnosed GD.

I’m in NZ and most women still do the one hour screening test unless they’re have higher risk factors.

My OB does the two hour test as standard as well. I’d rather do the two hour than risk failing and having to go back and do the three hour.
ETA: I was 28 and 33 with my pregnancies and did the two hour for both.

They wouldn't let me leave the blood place in between the blood draws. I live so close and wanted to leave to go home and shower. I snuck out during the second hour and felt really 007 about it all! I hope I pass!

@agold: the 2 hour is diagnostic. I did the 2 hour with my first, and failed
, but was so glad to not have to spend 4 hours feeling horrible.
I plan to just test numbers if I get pregnant again. I had extra monitoring with my labor and it was constricting and unnecessary

For my last pregnancy I had to do the 1 hr and the 3 hr test 2x! I was just barely AMA and have some extra lbs so they made me take the 1 hr test early in the pregnancy. Whatever the limit is for that test, that's what I got so I barely failed. I passed the 3 hour with flying colors. Then I had to do the same thing again at the normal time frame. Same situation. I had to drink that crap 4 times!

@Mommy Finger: That is crazy!! I can't believe that you had to do it all twice! Did you fail the one-hour the second time? So sorry, lady. I assume that everything ended up fine in the end. But I hate time-consuming activities such as these one hour and two hour and three hour (!!) tests.

@agold: Yes! I think my doctor was overly cautious. I have heard of others say that a "score" under 140 is considered passing but I'm pretty sure my doctor used 135. So if I had under that, I would be ok. Both times I got. . . 135. Ugh. Everything did end up being fine but I want that time back! I can remember how low my blood sugar was at the end of the 3 hour tests. I was so dizzy. So that's not what you want for a pregnant lady.

@agold: The reason they don't want you to leave is that your body processes sugar differently when you are active. They specifically told me to not even get up and walk around.

Ugh, that sounds terrible. I'm glad my OB's office is pretty laid back about it (at least for the 1 hour) - they give you the drink to take home, drink at home 1 hour prior to appointment (by a certain time), come into the office for blood draw/appointment, that's it. No sitting around a lab for forever. I am sure the 3 hour is probably done under stricter conditions.

@MrsADS: this is actually part of why so many women go undiagnosed. Activity of any sort makes your levels lower so you can miss being diagnosed if you drink it, go for a walk, and then go to your appointment

@MrsADS: the 2 hour is much better for catching more diagnosis. It's crazy to me that the 1 hour is still so widely used
