We put the older's convertible seat behind the driver because it is forward facing, and the infant seat behind the passenger. Now we have two convertibles in the same configuration (oldest behind driver, forward facing, youngest behind passenger, backward facing).

We were able to fit our infant seat in the middle and the convertible forward-facing right next to it (behind the driver), so a third passenger could squeeze in behind the front passenger. We eventually switched it to the infant seat behind the front passenger because it was tough to haul the bucket seat up into the middle seat. A very small passenger could barely fit in the middle of the two. That was with our CR-V.

Now we have a rear-facing convertible behind the front passenger and a forward-facing booster/convertible behind the driver. Middle passenger can fit somewhat comfortably, but it's still tough to get to.

We have a minivan with bucket seats, so DD's booster is in one bucket seat, and DS's car seat is rearfacing in the other bucket seat. My cousin actually purposely put her two car seats in your configuration to make the kids get comfortable with being close and having less personal space!

We plan to have the infant seat rear facing behind the passenger and the toddler (2+) Forward facing behind the driver.

I have captains chairs, so they're separate. In my old car I had them next to one another, but then separated them because it was distracting to have them bothering each other.
