So, we took DS for his two month appointment and he ended up being in 5th percentile for height and weight and 10 percentile for head. The doctor said he was proportional and doing great but I'm little sad numbers are so low.. As backstory, he was born 6 weeks early and weighed 4 lbs 8 ozs, he is now up to 9 lbs 8 ozs. Did anyone else have low numbers?

I personally don't have any experience with this, but my sister had a friend whose baby was born early due to pre-eclampsia at 27 weeks, maybe 29 weeks. You can't tell that she was born early at all now. I also have another friend that was born at 28 wks and he is over 6 feet tall. I think that as long as he is proportional to himself, then that's ok. I have one friend who baby, that arrived on time, was always in the 90th percentile of everything--height, weight, head. Their other son was always 90th percentile of height, but 50th percentile of weigh. He was just long and skinny, while the other was just big all over.

You should not be sad that they are low! The percentiles are not a competition, they are just to make sure that your baby is tracking along his curve. Lala is 4%ile for height and weight and somewhat larger for head... can't remember, maybe 35%?

He has gained so much weight! Good job fattening him up! My SIL had my nephew 7 weeks early. She was told to go by his due date for percentages in his first year. So, they measured him and would give her two numbers. At 8 weeks, he was essentially just 1 week old. Don't worry about it! Preemies take some time to cat has up.

Does your doctor's office go by his real age or his supposed due date? To my knowledge they usually count from his due date! Which is he is 8w now, he should be judged on the scale of 2w olds since your EDD was 2 weeks ago. -
@TurtleDoves: At our pediatricians office the percentiles are based on his actual age not gestational age. They said he was the right height, weight for 2 week old.

Aww don't worry! I think we get too caught up with these growth charts. The fact that he was 6 weeks early should make you feel better about how much weight he has gained. 5 lbs in 2 months is amazing.

I wouldn't worry about it, it will all even out. I mean my Niece wasn't a preemie and at 19 months doesn't walk yet (and she's tiny)

I have always been told as long as output (pee and poop) is good and they aren't plummeting percentiles it doesn't matter which line they are on. Also, there are different percentile charts dependent on how you feed baby (i.e. breast, formula or mixed). There is also a lot of variation just between ethnicity. You are doing fantastic with the weight gain. You put on 5 pounds in 2 months which is remarkable!!!!!
My story is that my son started in the 50th percentile and plummeted to the 0.5 percentile by 6 months. He started gaining weight at 9 months and has gained 5 pounds in 6 months. He 15 months old and 19 pounds and the 2 percentile now. Our doctor still wants him to put on weight but we are ll in agreement that he is healthy now.

DS has virtually the same numbers as your son - born 5 lb 5 oz and 17.5 inches but when we left he hospital was 4 lb 13 oz - no explanation for why he was so small given that he was only 10 days early. His percentages were 1st percentile at his 1 week appt. At his 2 month appt he was 9 lbs even and 21.25 inches -- 5th percentile for weight and height and 10th for head. Our pee is very happy as his growth is strong and percentages don't really matter. We are just happy he is thriving.
