I don't want 3-4 children for status sake. Around here I doubt it would be considered much of a status symbol anyway because we're in the suburbs were there is plenty of space for a bigger family.

This is a crazy reason to have a kid! BUT, when I do hear about families living in manhattan with 3 or more kids my immediate first thought is: How do they afford to do that???

I read some frou-frou novel that talked a lot about having extra kids as a status symbol. I doubt many people go into it thinking "I want to show I have tons of money so I am going to have lots of kids" but I do think it sort of works out that way for some people in a backwards kind of way. A lot of people would have more kids if money was no object so it becomes the common thing in their social circle and next thing you know it's the popular choice and you're odd if you choose to have fewer kids. I don't think it's a good reason to have kids but I am sure it happens.

This is actually pretty common in the county I live in...but with 5 and 6 kids.

i know that pre-recession, it was totally a status symbol to have 4+ kids in manhattan, to show you could afford the 5bed apartment, private school tuition for that many, etc. then with the whole banker backlash, i don't think people talked about it as much... i guess it's back!

This is crazy...we do want 3 kids but in no way bc they're status symbols!! In fact I wonder how we will manage with 3 in the city, when the time comes! I didn't even think about the cab thing, lol.

That article just breaks my heart. I live in NYC, and won't even be able to afford to have two kids Housing is way too expensive here.

I've heard that having a big dog is a status symbol too. I think having TEENAGERS in the city is a status symbol, you never see them because no one can afford to live here that long!

Crazy. People have to be making big, big money to afford the rent/mortgage on a place big enough for 3 kids! I feel like people probably have 3 kids because they want a bigger family, but it seems like a status symbol because everyone that lives here knows how much $$ it would cost to have 3 kids.

I kinda want three kids but I don't live in Manhattan and I have no issues having 2 kids share a bedroom. I think in 5 years, a decent 3 bedroom condo where we live will be in our price range and I would totally raise 3 kids in a 3 bedroom, with 2 kids sharing 1 room.
