We are going to visit my parents this weekend. We get a very short period of time since I have to be back here to work on Monday morning.
What would your preference be?
Get in the car at bedtime tonight or get in the car after first meal in the morning?

We have an 8 hour drive tonight! We will leave at 4, which means we will hit traffic, but LO will go to sleep at 6 or 7 and sleep the rest of the way.

We did a long 12 hour drive when LO was 7 months and we drove at night both ways. Its the best decision we made. We left home at around 8pm to avoid traffic. That way she just slept through it all

I would go tomorrow to avoid traffic unless your little one tends to be fussy in the car

We always did the night drive. I would feed and then we would head out because DD would sleep. We've done the same now that DS has joined us.

I would just go in the morning. If you leave early, 3 hours will be quick.

It's a tough call but I'd choose the morning. 3 hours isn't that long. Can she get a nap in the car? I'd probably try to line it up with a nap.

@mrs. wagon: @Mrs. Bee: she usually falls asleep on the way to daycare (we leave the house at 6:40am). So, a nap in the car is possible...

We have a 4 hour car ride with a 15 month old who hates the carseat. we are leaving at 1:30 today. I'm hoping for a long nap from her. I always prefer daytime driving.

I would time it with a hopeful nap and go in the morning. I hate waking her up when we get home to move her to bed for the night, and she sleeps great in the car. 3 hours isn't super long either so she can play for a bit then hopefully sleep

How bad do you think the traffic will be? For 3 hours, I would definitely wait for bedtime if you don't think it will be horrendous.
I'm leaving at naptime today for a 5.5-hour drive. The nap won't even get us halfway, but then we'll stop for a looooong break to tire him out enough to sleep for the second leg.

we have 3 hr drive whenever we visit my family too. we typically drive to coincide with first morning nap. so they sleep the first half and I sit back there and play the second half. we've done the bedtime drive too, and while they'll usually sleep the drive, it makes a much harder time the rest of the night because they're off kilter. my kids generally react better to schedule interruptions in the morning hours.

For 3 hours, I think you're OK leaving in the morning.
We had a 8 hour drive last Saturday with LO (she's 4m) and we did it during the day. Got up really early, fed her while DH finished loading up the car, and we were on the road at 5 AM or so. We stopped for breakfast and for a feeding, and then again a few hours later to walk around and for LO to get out of the infant carrier. So I think it overall took 12 hours, but she did great. We've got to do it again tomorrow - hopefully she does well like last time!
