Im going to Lake Tahoe for a week next month and I havent been in snow in over 15 years. And havent experienced cold weather under 50°F in years. (My husband has never seen snow in person)I'm looking for an affordable jacket that will do the trick of keeping me warm and pants that aren't going to break the bank. I found stuff from Columbia sportswear but shipping is ridiculous, so thats out. Im looking at Target but havent gotten any further. Am I crazy for thinking. I can find a jacket thats waterproof for snow for under $100? Help! I am not good at deal finding for myself.

What about looking in a place like Marshall's, TJ Maxx, etc? They tend to have good deals on things like jackets, though I'm not sure if it's too late where you live?

@MoonMoon: I live in Hawaii they dont have that stuff here. I was thinking about being too late with the season change in the stores. We just got a Northface but its expensive!

@BabyMats: that's tough! Any chance a friend has something you could borrow, since you only need it for the trip? Or someone on the mainland that could buy something for you? I'm in upstate NY and our stores still have winter gear out.

Yeah I would totally borrow. Honestly it will be tough to get a jacket and pants for under $100. Do you have a rain shell that would allow for layering under? If anyone has a down jacket/sweater you could borrow they keep you SUPER warm and you could wear that under the rain shell. A really warm base layer is crucial. The snow pants will be tough to find as well; I'd borrow if you can.
You could always chance the sale rack at a ski shop. There might even be rental places that would rent you a ski bib and pants. That might be worth a call. My brother in law had to rent a ski jacket and pants once when the airline lost his luggage.oh! one more site to check is Campmor. They offer past seasons gear at good prices. Don't know how shipping would work though.

@BabyMats: are you going to be out in the snow for hours (skiing, etc) or just walking from place to place and playing in the snow for short periods? I think you could get away with some cheap stuff if it's short spurts, but if you will be out all day skiing it could ruin your trip if you are cold and wet the whole time.

Not sure if the Sports Authority or Patagonia in town might have some stuff? I think Patagonia might be kind of pricey though.

Can you wait until you get to the continental US? That's probably what I would do given the tight time frame and shipping expense to HI.
Columbia is basically as reasonable a price I have found especially at their outlet. Maybe try a store like REI or Dunham's?

@BabyMats: it sounds possible to me. Maybe they won't be the highest quality but that seems like no big deal for just a week. I'd look online somewhere like kohls. A lot of winter stuff is on clearance now. Not sure of what exactly you need but I found this one:

@BabyMats: I live in Wisconsin and have good luck with the brand zeroxposur. Plenty warm, dry, and won't break the bank. A lot of winter stuff is on clearance right now too. @BabyMats: Do you already have a gore tex shell (a raincoat)? I did when I lived Big Island, but I worked outside at night so I got rained on a lot. That could do the trick with layers. What about places like 6pm and Sierra Trading Post? What about checking tradesy?

My three recommendations include:
1. Borrowing
2. Look at Sierra Trading Post online. It's discounted winter gear...some stuff is stupid cheap.
3. But from llbean and then return it once you're done since they do 100% refund policy. -
I'm assuming you'll drive into Lake Tahoe from an airport? If stop at a consignment/thrift shop along the way (maybe more than 1). Ours always have tons of coats and pants. Maybe not the most stylish, but useful in a pinch!

You could look on thredup, it's online consignment and they may have winter gear, they do for kids.

I found some really nice Columbia snow jackets on Amazon, with Prime shipping. I don't know if they do Prime delivery to Hawaii, though.

How about zappos? There are snow pants there for about 120, although no great coat deals I can find easily.

Do you have Amazon prime? Type in winter jacket and look at the reviews of inexpensive coats?

Maybe you could ship the jackets to the hotel instead? That might help with the shipping costs.

@BabyMats: Yup, I live in Hawaii too! Ooh I just remembered that a few years ago my husband bought a snow jacket for under $40 at the Ross next to Sports Authority. I didn't check out the women's section since I borrowed a friends outerwear but I hope they'd have similar items. And I'm sure it would be cheaper than Sports Authority and definitely way cheaper than Patagonia. It's so hard finding cold weather clothes out here and I hate spending alot too since it hardly gets used.

I would ship to where ever you are staying, I do it all the time when travelling.

Are you flying into Reno? There will be plenty of opportunity to stop at a store between RTO and the lake. Look up "play it again sports" in reno.
