**UPDATE**
just thought i'd update everyone who sent their well wishes for lil cosby. he had some blood work done last wk after dropping weight again and it doesn't look good. there's a slight chance he has severe IBD, but it looks very much like he has lymphoma in his intestines. it's not something that can be cured and to officially diagnose he would need exploratory surgery and after confirmation we could go ahead and do chemo, but since it can't actually be cured, it would come back and we'd likely only add 6-9months to his life. as much as i'd love 6-9 more months with my best friend, i don't think i can ask him to go through that for me. he's on some meds to help with the inflammation in his gut and the acid from vomiting, both of which would also be part of treating IBD if we were really lucky & that is causing his issues, but again that would be very surprising. looks like we will be treating symptoms and trying to keep him comfy until we think his quality of life is just too far gone. there are a quite a few vets that do in home euthanasia which brings me an odd sense of relief, the car is torture for him and i can't imagine forcing him to drive in the car to be put down when the time comes (sounds like it's usually less than 4wks between diagnosis and death is you don't do chemo, but because he's already been sick for awhile and he's down so much weight, probably much less)). they'll come to your house so he can stay where he's comfy and have his favorite things and people with him, then they can take him when it's over. poor mr. bird was woken more than a few times to my sobbing during the night. i'm beside myself.

@mrs. bird: I am so sad to hear this.
When it was time to say goodbye to our last pup (who had colon cancer) we opted for home euthanasia. We're really glad we did because it made his last moments as peaceful as possible.

@mrs. bird: Ugh, ugly-crying for you. And I'm not a person who cries over people on the internet. I'm so, so sorry. If it is any comfort at all I try to keep in mind in these situations that this is hardest on YOU, not him. He doesn't know what is happening or what will happen. All he knows is you've been the best cat-mom ever and will continue to be until his last moment (which he will never realize is his last). I guess it would be impossible for our pets to bring us so much joy and not cause us so much pain at the end, but it just doesn't seem fair that we always have to say goodbye.

thanks, ladies.
@pui: thank you! i'm so sorry to hear you lost your pup, i'm glad you found the in home experience to be a peaceful one though
@oliviaoblivia: thank you for your sweet words! i feel so helpless since i can't fix this, it makes it hard to feel like i'm a good mama to him right now
@lemondrop: you are my angel, thank you and your husband! you're both amazing!
@Mae: i'm sorry we made you cry! thank you for your kind thoughts! it's true, he brings me so much joy, he is my constant companion and keeper of all my secrets, he is the reason i'm never alone. he does look at me like i'm the best thing ever, which makes me feel amazing and awful all at the same time. the vet said she thinks he's uncomfortable, but not in pain, so that makes me feel better. you're right, he won't know when it's gonna be his last moment, and they'll give him sedatives before the last injection, so it'll be peaceful and calm for him. thank you!

@mrs. bird: oh my goodness. I am so so so sorry. Poor Coz. I do love that he will "go to sleep" at home, so comfortable and in your arms. I think that is the best, most dreamiest way to have to let your baby go... pets are babies that AREN'T meant to outlive us. So heartbreaking. But knowing that he won't be in pain anymore, and he gets to leave this earth at his MOST happiest, at home with his family, is wonderful. You are such a wonderful kitty mama and he is so, so, so lucky to have had you. Know that he has lived the fullest life possible with you!! and can go in peace!!

Oh, I am so, so sorry.
From one crazy cat lady to another, I know how devastating it can be to lose a best friend!
It's such a hard decision to make, but I honestly believe it's the kind of decision that goes hand in hand with giving a beloved pet the best kind of life. They are so loved when they are with us, and we let them leave us with love and compassion.
My family recently had to make the same decision for my childhood kitty, and it doesn't get easier, so I understand, and you and your family and your kitty are in my thoughts.

@mrs. bird: Oh, I'm so, so sorry. I can't imagine what you are going through. A friend of mine had to make this decision recently for both a cat and a dog, and it is so very sad. I'll be thinking about you and Cosby.
