@Mrsdaredevil: My mom lives in the 'burbs in an affluent area and has had nothing but problems for years with break-ins, her car being vandalized, homeless people, etc. It seems like the problem people want to be where they know the money is . I hope you don't have anymore issues!

Yikes! That is SO SCARY! I get so mad when DH forgets to lock the door. I am a perpetual door locker, to the point where I have locked DH out when he was working on the yard/garden a dozen times in 3 years (once when it was about -40 ... oops!)

OMG! This freaks me out! I always lock the door and check it a million times a day. DH always picks at me for it. I'm glad it ended up being someone harmless and that you are okay!

@Mrsdaredevil: OMG how scary!!!! Do you live in a city where there is a high population of homeless people? I find it very weird that a homeless person just walked into your home!!
ETA: I see now you said you live in the 'burbs. Wow. Just. Wow.

I went through something similar when I was in college. I was home at my parents for the summer and one afternoon when I came home from running errands there was a stranger in our house. I was in such shock that I just yelled at him to "get the F out of my house!!". We called the police but they never found the guy as far as I know. They think I must have come home right after he got in because nothing was stolen. I would DEFINITELY report the incident to your local police department so they can patrol your area for the safety of you and your neighbors and also hopefully help that woman get somewhere safe for her as well.

We've had drunk people try to get into our house thinking it was theirs, but never someone come in! I've worked at a homeless shelter, and I'm sure that would startle me - especially with a baby there. I think sometimes people just get into survival mode, where they aren't thinking "oh it would be socially inappropriate for me to go into this house. I shouldn't do that" and think "I need food/water/to sit down/bathroom so I'll go here." Don't worry about not doing something - it's hard to do something meaningful that would actually help, people usually need more long term care. And the police would have probably just drove her back to a shelter. Sorry you were scared! I would've been to!
