I just heard about this new show that ABC has picked up this year! I'm not really sure what I think about it yet. At first, I was just shocked at the name and wondered if I should I be offended? Or maybe happy to see an Asian American family featured in a show? It does look kind of funny though. What do you guys think of it (as a Asian or non-Asian)?

The trailer looks pretty hilarious, although the mom's accent bothers me because it seems to be sliding around and appearing and disappearing.
The title is based on the book's title--the memoir of the writer growing up.

I'm actually looking forward to it. It's supposed to be different from All-American Girl, which played up Korean stereotypes.
I wouldn't be offended by the name. Like what @anagram said, it's based on the writer's memoir. It's also the name of his show on Vice!

I just know the father is the guy that played Asian Jim in The Office!
I'd give it a go... Not really sure of it's longevity, but gotta support an all Asian cast/story line! I can totally relate to some of the things, being a FOB myself

@Anagram: Yeah, the Moms accent seemed a little over the top to me and more stereotypical and fake than any Asian accents I've actually heard in real life. Ah, I didn't know that was the title of his memoir, that make sense then.

@PurplePumps: yeah, I didn't know that actress so I just googled her and she's born-and-raised american. So maybe they can afford to get her an accent coach now that the show has been picked up! haha

I'm excited for it! I don't know how successful it will be, but I'll support it for as long as it's around, especially since it portrays a Taiwanese family!

Asian and was a lil offended at first till I realized it was based off of his blog/memoir. Felt better afterwards. ha!
I think it'll be funny, but also question it's longevity!

I've watched the trailer and am kinda excited to get to watch a show that showcases Asian americans (and the struggle to assimilate or feel included in a comedic way). I really like Eddie Huang BTW. His web series are hilarious.
I also feel that his story is so similar to mine (me: FOB, Chinese American but try to act not like a "chinese person", parents are restaurantuers, finding the way my family navigating the american culture hilarious and/or a struggle, later in life really embracing my heritage and culture)
My hope is that the show does well (although chances look slim).

I'm not Asian, but I am an expat living in the US, who lived in Japan for a few years before coming here, so whilst I can't relate per say, I do think it looks really appealing (knowing it is based off a memoir).
On a side note, the samples thing made me remember a time I was in Japan. A lady walked over to a table where there was a half-open box of chicken and ate a piece (in a gourmet supermarket) as one would a free sample. I therefore assumed it was a sample and followed suit. Nope. She was just snacking on food for sale, and, as a result, so was I. I was mortified!

hahaha I loved the trailer! I'm Asian too and excited to watch it -- cringed a little bit at the mom's accent -- hopefully she can get a coach, as a pp said!
