Me too girl, me too. But my real problem is pastries.. Cause I actively seek those out and devoure

I love candy, too...to the point where it's a staple on our grocery list.
This pregnancy, though, I'm really cutting out sweets for good, so maybe we'll get out of that habit once and for all!

@runnerd: I seek out candy and buy one to two bags and eat them all. Small checkout size bags are one thing but they're usually the 99cent ones from the drugstore that are bigger (and 750-900 calories per bag). I had two this afternoon and feel so sick
bananas / 9229 posts
@Dandelion: We don't keep it in the house. I think that's part of the problem. Pre-DH, I would have some in the house and it was like a security blanket. I knew it was there but didn't feel like I *had* to eat it. Now we never have it and DH practically avoids sweets. So I "sneak" it at work. Hence the overeating (I don't want to call it binging).

I candy! I had to cut back during my pregnancy because of GD but it is back in my life and is becoming a problem!

I think my biggest issue, if you will, is that I never use to eat it quite like this. And I don't want to eat this way when I'm pregnant.

@lindsayinny: i was JUST thinking this the other day. for some reason, i've been buying chocolate candy at checkout counters like it's my JOB. we should make a rule for ourselves - once a week or something!
grapefruit / 4311 posts
@LindsayInNY: yep that sounds like a classic "me" move... It sucks because I have to be "all or nothing" about buying stuff since I have no self control then I end up cracking and going on mad search for sugar.
nectarine / 2705 posts
@LindsayInNY: I can SO relate - do you see my username? I used to find that I could easily eat an entire bag of candy on my own, and it got really bad when I would do it to work through periods of stress. I used to buy it at my last job and just eat it all throughout the workday. I am finding if I don't have it around, it works a LOT better. Out of sight, out of mind definitely helps. Also, trying to remember that ill feeling you get when you go through two bags helps.
I'm sure when you're pregnant things could change, just because of aversions and cravings. That's what I've experienced so far. So just try to identify what triggers the candy cravings, and maybe try to find other ways to fill that need. I found that chewing gum was helpful. I still got the sweet fix, but I didn't eat an entire bag of spice drops

@mfa_lady: I really need to figure out how to limit myself instead of acting like it's a necessity every time I have the chance to buy it.
@runnerd: Yup. I buy two things telling myself I'll save one for later but always end up eating both. I have no self-control around it and no portion control.
@sweetooth: Not having it is really the only thing that helps. But I go to CVS and buy it so I need to figure out how to stop the purchasing too. And, yes, the ill feeling is such a slap in the face after!

@lindsayinny: have you ever tried an app like my fitness pal? the only time i REALLY stopped eating candy like a crazy woman was when i was doing that. it might seem a little extreme to monitor your entire diet just to cut out candy, but it really makes you think about things differently. i might try getting back to it!
bananas / 9229 posts
@mfa_lady: Been there, done that! You're right though - that's really been one of the only times where I was really mindful of what I was eating. The only thing I don't like is that it only gives me 1200 calories per day which is really tough. I need to start using it again...
pomegranate / 3921 posts
@lindsayinny: same here! i think last time i did it, though, i had that i wanted to lose weight, even if just a couple of pounds. i think if you say you want to maintain, it gives you a couple hundred extra calories per day. good luck!
nectarine / 2705 posts
@LindsayInNY: I know! I would make trips to CVS during the workday when I was in the city and not even think twice about it. The big kicker for me was when I finally got back into the dentist after a very long hiatus. I think my luck with my teeth is part hereditary and part candy fiend. I had SO many cavities, that it really made me snap out of it.
One idea for portion control is to buy those little snack baggies. Portion the candy out and then hide the bags filled with other candy. (I know I'd have to have someone else hide them though, or I'd have no willpower!)
bananas / 9229 posts
@sweetooth: I had hereditary dental issues too but they were all pre-candy problems. If I bought the snack baggies, I would definitely need someone to stash them for me!
I just saw a book that I want to read: Beyond Sugar Shock

Oh man, I've been there. I have a major sweet tooth and I love chocolate. It makes me feel so good to eat chocolate. I got into a bad little habit of going to the drugstore on my lunch break and buying candy and then finishing it within days. I just try my hardest to not allow myself to have it at work. At home, I keep dark chocolate chips. For some reason I'm able to limit myself to just a handful of those a day.
After I had my son, I went crazy eating chocolate and candy. I was so stressed taking care of him and I used breastfeeding too as an excuse. I got so bad that I was hiding wrappers around the house b/c I didn't want my hubby to see them in the trash and know how much I ate. Ultimately, joining weight watches made me nip it in the bud. But I still struggle with the self control... so I just can't allow myself to buy it.

Ugh. I have a hereditary dental issue, too. Its so not fair.
And I buy dark dove chocolates for my house under the guise of needing them for DH's friends when they come over. But I've eaten the whole stash and replaced it with a new bag without telling DH. I've done this with chewy chocolate chip chips ahoy cookies too. I seriously think I have a problem
ETA: Whenever DH questions me about some food item being gone in the house, I say that my sister came over and ate it all. She just lives down the street. She says the same thing about me at her house.
bananas / 9229 posts
@mrskc: I think my biggest issue is that I'm keeping it from DH. I'm not buying 10 bags at a time or anything (usually 1-2, sometimes more frequently than others). But I am keeping it from him. I buy it on the credit card that he won't see the transactions for, eat it at work... It's just such a waste of money! I need the self-control to not even buy it!
nectarine / 2705 posts
@LindsayInNY: That looks like a good book. I think the only thing I couldn't do is go cold turkey. But I know there are huge benefits to cutting out sugars. I successfully cut soda out of my life. So candy should be possible. I could be your "cut out the candy" buddy Maybe there are more bees who want to cut out the candy?
coconut / 8861 posts
@mrskc: This sounds exactly like me! Stress of breastfeeding, work, marriage counseling, pumping all manifested for me in overeating and lots of chocolate. I've gotten better too. I'm doing Weight Watchers right now to curb the chocolate and sugar cravings.
bananas / 9229 posts
@sweetooth: What's crazy is that I HAVE given up sugar before! I use to give up all junk food for lent. Last year I did a 3-4 month insane fitness plan that was ALL low sugar. I don't know how I relapsed into this so bad! I'll let you know how the book is - but a buddy can't help!!
nectarine / 2705 posts
@MrsMcD: haheahahah!!! I love that you and your sister use each other to blame the disappearing candy and sweets!
@LindsayInNY: Before I married my husband, I used to hide candy stashes all over our apartment. I knew I had a problem, because I was hiding it from him. I actually wrote into my wedding vows "I promise to share my candy with you" with the hopes of making me more honest about it. It works, I don't hide it anymore, but I still don't have the self-control to stop buying or eat the whole bag before he gets a chance to try it. He also doesn't have much of a sweet tooth.
nectarine / 2705 posts
@LindsayInNY: If you've done it before, I bet you can do it again. I bet it's tied to something else, you know? I really found that when I learned how to handle my stress in other ways (or I left a particularly stressful job) that my habits changed drastically.
bananas / 9357 posts
@LindsayInNY: I struggle with not buying it too. Trader Joe's is my weakness and I just went there on Sunday and had to have the dark chocolate covered caramels. I finished them in two days and even brought them to work with me on Monday so DH wouldn't know how fast I ate them. I feel embarrassed about it. Do you feel embarrassed? Is that why you hide it from your DH? Do you go to the store for the sole purpose of buying candy? Or do you go for something else and impulsively purchase candy at the register? I would try and avoid shopping. Maybe fess up to your Dh and have him go with you shopping to help keep you from buying it. Good luck to you!
@cascademom: how is weight watchers going? it worked really well for me. I lost about 18 lbs and all the baby weight doing it for 3 months. Now that I'm mostly just maintaining my weight, I've gotten back into sweets again! Ugh!

I used to have a candy dish at work, I had to throw it away because of this same problem. My stomach woud HURT and I would still go to grab a piece, it's awful.
coconut / 8861 posts
@mrskc: It's going well. I've lost 10 lbs on Weight Watchers and two before it in a little over a month. I wish that I would have gotten on it sooner before I really went overboard with comfort eating and eating to think it'll help breastfeeding.

I loooove candy. Except for some reason during this pregnancy it doesn't sound good. I think that's a good thing!
grapefruit / 4717 posts
I love, love, love candy, too. My dad is a dentist, so I grew up in a household where candy was taboo (at least by my dad). My parents took my Halloween candy and let me have 1 piece per day....until I found the hiding spot and snuck way more than that. My mom used to let me sneak candy, and we were told to hide the wrapper before my dad came home. Obviously not a healthy eating habit!
I rebelled in college and used to eat candy all the time while studying. Didn't help that they had bulk bins of my favorites! We even had a candy buffet table at our wedding! I'm 13 months pp, still bf, and my body is still holding onto the extra weight like it's its job. So, I'm trying desperately to kick the sweets habit. It's really tough because there are always tons of sweets around the office -- my body is trained to look in all the "sweets" spots many times a day to see if something new has appeared.
I think I'm finally on the right track: I avoid the candy section in CVS and focus on how great summer fruit is right now instead. I don't bother with the stuff at work because I just don't think the extra calories are worth 3 minutes of enjoyment. Then I'll let myself have something I REALLY want on a weekend. I know if I have one mini candy bar that I'm kind of "meh" about, the next thing I know, I will have eaten 6 without even realizing it. Sugar is so addicting!
bananas / 9229 posts
@sweetooth: I'm sure the fact that I'm not working out regularly isn't helping things either.
@mrskc: I definitely feel embarrassed. It's a waste of money, doesn't help the weight/body image especially since I haven't been working out. There's no real benefit to it at all. I hide it because I know DH would comment - "do you need that?" or something. And I often stop at a drugstore on my way back from Court to the office and buy it then. For no apparent reason either really. I do need to avoid shopping since I think that would help. Not sure how I feel about fessing up quite yet. =/ I think not having it in the house or as a treat is part of the reason I "sneak" it, if that makes sense.
@Bao: I'm praying I don't want it when I'm pregnant!!
bananas / 9229 posts
@pregnantbee: I need to make the changes you just mentioned - avoiding the candy section at CVS is the main one! Most of what I'm eating is just meh to begin with...
bananas / 9357 posts
@LindsayInNY: It's tough to break out of a sugar addiction. I guess the best thing would be to recognize what your triggers are and find a way that works for you to redirect yourself from buying it. Can you just keep a little at home and just allow yourself to have it on the weekends or something?

*waves* Hi, I'm MsLipGloss and I'm a sugar addict.
@LindsayInNY: I am a sugar addict and a compulsive finisher too. Those two are a horrible combo! But I just can't make myself stop . . . I always buy the bigger than normal size bags and eat everything I buy in one sitting! I know I am just eating my feelings, but, I can't let them all out or I would rAwR a lot! : /

I can eat a whole bag of gummy bears, box of Dots, huge chocolate bar in one sitting and not even feel sick. I have to avoid the candy aisle.

Here is what is currently in my desk:
Haribo Peaches
Life Savors Gummies Mix Reds Sours
Skittles (Original)
I also had some Riesens, but they are now gone.
Anybody want to kick the sugar habit with me?
nectarine / 2705 posts
@MsLipGloss: Mmmm, I love me some Haribo Peaches. And the Haribo Fruit Salad too.
I just thought of this thread and tried to satisfy my need for sweets with a bowl of grapes. So I washed off the grapes, and brought them to my desk...and along the way I grabbed a handful of Chocolate Covered Sea Salt Butterscotch Caramels. I have issues.
How would you begin to kick the habit? Maybe we have a daily sugar check-in. And we admit to each other all of the candy we ate that day
bananas / 9229 posts
@MsLipGloss: I'm in the same boat - it's not the sizes at the checkout that I buy and not the massive bags but the in between ones (the $1-1.50 portions). And whatever I buy, I finish. If I had those in my desk, they likely wouldn't last until tomorrow... =/
