Addicted... To Candy :(

@LindsayInNY: @sweetooth: FWIW, I actually did really well while I was pg . . . I can remember one or two days of being out of control, but that's about it. What did me in was PPD (I bonded with LO right away, but I had a traumatic induction with multiple complications and horrible family drama that was just too much) . . . and in the beginning, I ate sugar because I felt better. If only for a little while.

    @mrskc: Yum! That sounds delicious!

@MsLipGloss: Proud of you for confessing. Even more proud that you threw the rest away. This thread is definitely coming along at the right time for me too.

@sweetooth: It's only because I eat it all as soon as I buy it, LOL! I need to avoid the triggers now - avoiding the stores where I buy it is a start!

@MsLipGloss: Sorry to hear about the trauma and drama you went through. I appreciate you sharing about the PPD, I'll have to keep an eye on that kind of thing triggering my candy as a comfort habit. I'm due around the holidays and I have a HUGE weakness for seasonal candy. I can see myself gorging on candy when I can't figure out how to make the baby stop crying.

@spaniellove: Next step, tell your husband to throw them away when you're not looking

@MsLipGloss: I bought a container of those caramels on Sunday-ate half of them sunday and the other half at work on Monday. Sheesh. I even looked at calorie content to deter me.... it didn't. I can totally relate to the postpartum eating. I went crazy after I had my son. At first my excuse was "I just popped out a baby, I can eat whatever I want" Then my DH went back to work and I was alone all day with a newborn and it really wore me down. I had a huge bag of mini candies that stayed on the couch so I could eat them while I nursed all day. My DH didn't help because he was buying it all for me! He'd bring me home more without me even asking for it. I didn't protest of course and just ate it all. Weight watchers really helped me stop that bad habit and I have much better control now.

I'm definitely an 'eat a bag" kind of girl. Especially swedish fish. I would ask DH to bring me home some fishies from Walgreens when I was pregnant, but I'd always tell him to get me the small box or i'd eat the whole damn bag.

Avoid the aisle. Don't buy any. Or put those $3 somewhere else and buy yourself something else with it that you really want! You know those articles about "what it takes to burn off 10 M&Ms?" When i think about how much work it takes to burn off a candy bar, it really makes it NOT sound good.

We just don't keep candy in the house. If i don't eat sugar, I don't want sugar. It's an item that you want more of when you have it for sure! DH gets so annoyed we never have any candy that sometimes he'll eat my chocolate chips for baking. Sad, lol. He also can eat a whole bag in a week. It's also expensive! A bag of Reese's is like $4.

@lyndseyinny, milk is also notorious for causing those deep acne cysts, so if you were eating chocolate....!

Is it bad that my first thought seeing this thread was that it was about candy crush?

I have a serious addiction to snickers though.

So, while I did get myself some breakfast today from Chick Fil A, I did NOT order any chocolate chunk cookies. It is the first time I can remember *not* ordering them. But for this thread, I would have ordered at least one.

I am severely addicted to Twizzlers. Someone bought us a few bags right after the baby was born and it snowballed from there. Sometimes I wouldn't have time for a meal while on maternity leave but could subsist on a few Twizzlers. This week was the first time we didn't buy them at the grocery store. I miss them sooo much...

@blackbird: "If I don't eat sugar, I don't want sugar" - you are lucky. If I don't eat sugar, then I dream about sugar. And then the next time I'm out running an errand I quickly purchase a bag of spice drops.

@MsLipGloss: YAY! No cookies for breakfast! I had a piece of pumpkin bread from Starbucks this AM...I should have just stuck with my banana and cheerios, but I reasoned with myself that it's Friday. I deserve a treat. No candy so far though!

@sheskrafty: Twizzlers were my gateway back into candy after my nausea and morning sickness phase. They really can "tide you over" when you can't eat a full meal, that's what I think Proud of you for not buying them this week!

@blackbird: When DH was on a sweets/cookies binge I used to catch him eating the chocolate chips

Last night I caught him eating my chocolates out of the freezer. He's worse than me!

This is the first I have opened the this post and I haven't read any of the comments, but just reading the post title the other day made me want Laffy Taffy.....

...the bag I just got this morning may almost be all (except the banana I picked out for DH).

@sweetooth, the more i eat it, the more i want it. There's a lot of research about how it fires up the same drug receptors in your brain. I put sugar cravings in my mind vice and crush them Okay, ignore them. And ignore them, until they stop

I like the licorice flavored spice drops

You girls are too funny. I can't believe this thread is still going. Yesterday, there was a line at my building vending machine. That's never happened! I just wanted a pack of starbursts. I waited and thought of you girls. Then, last night at Costco, I saw this and really thought of all of us....

Sooooo . . . I did pretty well this weekend. My one fail was mindlessly throwing a bag of candy into our TJMaxx stash while we were checking out. I wasn't until I was halfway through that bag that I thought *WTH am I doing?!* Yesterday, my MIL made a special dessert for dinner, so I had a small(ish) portion and enjoyed every bite. Normally, I would have gone back for seconds a few hours later, but I didn't last night. All in all, not a completely awful sugar weekend . . . This just shows me that my sugar addiction is also partly habit, and I need to be more mindful and work on breaking that habit!

I used to buy candy (like M&Ms or hershey bars) all the time at lunch, but then i had to stop because i was getting sugar drops in the afternoon and feeling really sick. So i switched to buying dark chocolate bars (the darker the better) and that has really helped. it kills the craving but i really can't eat more than a few squares even if i wanted to because it has a little more bitterness than milk chocolate. I still go through more than my share of dark chocolate, and it's more expensive than buying the other candy, but it's so much better for me and my blood sugar is so much more balanced. Might be an option for you to not have to go cold turkey but not eat so much candy! i try to savor each square so it's a real treat

  25. sweetooth

    nectarine / 2705 posts

@MsLipGloss: It's definitely that mindless "grabbing a bag of candy" action that is a hard habit to break. Overall it does sound like your weekend wasn't too sugar-filled.

I did well resisting a large Haribo display, even thought of this thread when I saw it and knew that if I purchased a bag, I shouldn't be eating it all in one sitting. But I know myself, and I totally would have, if I bought some.

I resisted my craving to buy a bag of spice drops by drinking watermelon lemonade. Still calorie-filled but better than spice drops.

I will confess, I think these little treats are tiding me over when I need a sweet fix. I should throw them out, but there are only 3 tiny cones left.

Today is my hardest... I'm in Court in the morning and on my way back to the office, I pass by (and often stop) Duane Reade (convenience store) and Dunkin Donuts. I get coffee but am tempted by donuts and candy at the convenience store! Ladies give me strength!! My dress is too tight as it is...

  27. MsLipGloss

    GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts

@LindsayInNY: Every little bit helps! You don't want the sugar because you *know* you will feel better without out it(both mentally and physically!). You can do it!

@LindsayInNY: How did you do yesterday?

I went to Screen on the Green last night in DC on the Mall. The movie was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I wanted BAGS of candy after (and while) watching that movie. Luckily when I was headed home it felt too late to go to CVS for a bag of candy. But note to self and to other candy addicts - avoid movies filled with images of candy!

  31. LindsayInNY

    bananas / 9229 posts

@sweetooth: I survived yesterday! I didn't have enough time between the subway and the train to stop anywhere. That usually helps. However, today was ehh. I had a deposition in the morning and didn't finish until 12:30ish and was hungry. I bought two bags of candy (the checkout counter size) - grabbed one and then another. 2 = fail! BUT! The total calories is still less than the bigger boxes I usually buy so that's a good thing... I had a granola bar with me and should've eaten that instead. =/

  32. MsLipGloss

    GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts

@sweetooth: hahaha - and too true! images of candy/sweets can be triggering! just thinking about the movie makes my mouth water a bit.

@LindsayInNY: No worries doll. Progress, not perfection. Baby steps are so much more manageable and maintainable as compared to complete overhauls!

@MsLipGloss: That's why I'm not totally kicking myself. It's not the best but better than other days! Smaller bags is a start. Now to avoid picking up the second in the first place, LOL!

ok...i think i am ready to admit that i have a problem. since becoming dairy and soy free for LO i have been using sugar as my crutch. i basically cannot make it through the workday without having either chocolate or candy and at home every few days i am making a chocolate cake with frosting to get me through the evening. the problem is that i just get so hungry sometimes and the candy/chocolate/cake is such a nice quick boost and there is already so much i can't have.

i really want to make better choices! so hard!

@sweetooth: what are those mini cones?!?! I would gladly eat ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner and those mini cones would make the perfect snack! Did I mention I never had a sweet tooth before I got pregnant? Now I can't sleep if I don't have ice cream before bed.

@LindsayInNY: I agree with @MsLipGloss, progress is key. So the bags have decreased in size, step 1. Step 2 will be buying only 1 small bag and maybe a piece of fruit?

    @MsLipGloss: Images are total triggers!

@littlebittyhouse: It really is hard to make better choices. I decided to make myself a smoothie today for a sweet pick me up. Maybe you can start by making sure you have ready to eat fruit on hand and keep small portions of dark chocolate close by too.

@sheskrafty: The cones are little pieces of sweet heaven And they are the perfect amount too.

I have a confession...I just walked 1.5 miles round trip to get a bag of spice drops. I gave myself the first .75 miles to talk myself out of it, I even walked around CVS looking at beauty products and office supplies trying to will myself away from the inevitable. But it was no use, I was a woman on a mission. I blame Willy Wonka from the Monday night movie, and my inability to stop saying spice drops on this thread. Maybe now I can move on. After I finish this bag, of course.

  38. MsLipGloss

@sweetooth: Yanno, when I have a specific craving like that and I somehow manage to *avoid* it, I find myself eating around the craving in an (inane) attempt to satisfy the craving, and in so doing end up doing more *damage* than if I had just satisfied my craving. : / So, enjoy the spice drops!

I had a good day yesterday . . . had a tiny portion of left-over dessert (about 1/8 of what I would typically have eaten!). No other sugar/ sweets. I have also been good about hopping on the elliptical after I put LO down for the night. (It feels so great to have my nights back! . . . I could not have done this 3 months ago.) My motivation? LO turns 1 in September (holy cow!), and we have her party and our family pictures then too. I am not looking to drop all of the weight this month (although I wouldn't complain if I did!), but even just the last couple of days have made me feel so much more in control and capable of accomplishing my weight goal . . . whereas before I was really struggling to convince myself that I could do it. I have never had more than 10 or so pounds to lose (I have 15 to go to pre-pg weight, but 20 to my ideal weight), and I was feeling overwhelmed, out of control, and defeated. Thank you, lovelies, for helping me to turn it around!

@MsLipGloss: I agree with that. If I am craving something, better to just get it, otherwise I eat more trying to not eat what I was craving.

    You are doing great!!!

    GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts

@Smurfette: Thanks. It really is just one day at a time though . . . if I start to look at more than just that, I start to feel panicky and then it goes downhill from there. I am having *tons* of anxiety about LO's birthday (all self-imposed, of course!) and about her starting daycare in the fall . . . but it is also making me realize that she needs me to be happy and healthy (and not neurotic), and I can't be that if I don't lose the rest of the weight. *sigh*
