Addicted... To Candy :(

@MsLipGloss: Yeah, I reached the point where I knew I just needed to go for it. And now, the bag is gone and I feel like blah! And the baby is kicking a lot - so I think that's the payback. He's letting me know, "No more spice drops mom!"

I'm glad that this thread is helping you move forward with your weight loss goals. One day at a time is the best method. I bet there is a lot of emotion surrounding a baby's 1st birthday and starting daycare. It's so important to find healthy ways to work through all of that. Good for you for making time for the elliptical each night.

Even though I cracked today, I do feel more aware and conscious of my candy consumption thanks to my fellow candy fiends here on HB

@MsLipGloss: It really is one day at a time. I have to remind myself of that all the time.

@MsLipGloss: Yay! I'm glad you are making progress! You are doing great.

So I've been doing ok. My problem isn't so much candy, it's sweets in general! I haven't had chocolate in my oatmeal 2 days in a row now! Yay! I'm able to make it through the day just fine until after dinner. I love dessert after dinner. I just need better self control. I'm out of ice cream now & I only have a little bit of chocolate chips left. I can't buy anymore! I would like to get to a point where I only have a treat on the weekend.

I'm halfway through my lunch break right now and the thought crossed my mind that I could run to Rite Aid to get some chocolate! Must resist.

@sweetooth: I miss baby kicks! At least it was a conscious decision that you made (as opposed to just a reflex or habit), so that fact that you were mindful is huge. I don't consider *pre-meditated* cracking to be the same as regular *cracking*!

@mrskc: That's awesome! I have found both the early morning rituals (like ordering a cookie for breakfast!) and the late night rituals (like having candy/sweets while I peruse the interwebs) to be the hardest habits to break! You are doing great!

And, I also would like for my *treats* to really be just treats as opposed to every day/several days a week treats! And you can totally resist! You haven't had chocolate in two days . . . and the first day is always the hardest, so I know you can dooo eeeeet!

  5. mrskc

    bananas / 9357 posts

@MsLipGloss: seriously! Treats should just be treats. I like that.

@sweetooth: Ditto what @MsLipGloss: said. Sometimes, the more I try to avoid/resist, the more I end up eating of other things!

I went to Rite Aid this morning and didn't buy anything. And I had Court again this morning and bought an iced coffee after! I realize that part of the issue is cost... I could buy candy for $1 but the coffee is $2.75 - insane! It's cheaper to buy the candy but less healthy (obviously).

If I could handle sweets as "treats," it would be different. But it's a lot like an alcoholic. They can't have just one drink since it's all or nothing. That's the same way with me...

@LindsayInNY: Wooot! Yesss! (In my mind, I said *Great Success* in a Borat voice, just for the sake of full disclosure! :P)

And yes, it really is about the initial consumption triggering more consumption . . . I also feel compelled to eat the entire package of whatever it is so that I can't be *tempted* again later. *augh*

@mrskc: I hope you managed to resist Rite Aid. Yay for progress! No chocolate in your oatmeal for two days! I think dessert after dinner is allowed, but it's all about proper serving sizes. A single scoop of ice cream and a sprinkle of chocolate chips is perfect. Sitting down with a pint and a spoon, not-so-much!

@MsLipGloss: You're right, it definitely was a conscious decision. I just hope next time I can consciously say, "Come on, you know it's not going to be worth it." But the exercise was good!

Occasional treats really is a great goal. One that I'll have to try and keep in mind.

also - I totally scarfed the whole bag of spice drops so I wouldn't have a reminder, or another urge for MORE MORE MORE this evening. Why on earth I can't just eat a single serving of candy, I will never know.

@LindsayInNY: As I walked home with my little bag of spice drops I did feel like an addict. I do think candy addiction is a problem like alcoholism. Especially when it's something we hide from our significant others. But the first step is admitting that you have a problem! I say drink those iced coffees! And avoid the candy! And yay for your success this AM!

  9. LindsayInNY

    bananas / 9229 posts

@MsLipGloss: Yup, that's exactly it. I can't eat just one portion. Sometimes the snack size bags help but not always. It's seriously a sugar addiction.

@sweetooth: The fact that I was hiding it and ashamed to tell my husband about it is clearly a problem!

  10. mrskc

    bananas / 9357 posts

@LindsayInNY: I think it's good you recognize it's a problem and that even a little isn't good for you. You did great today getting coffee instead of candy!

@sweetooth: Didn't go to rite aid! And you're right in that small dessert it ok. I used to be much better at just having a piece of chocolate or just one scoop of ice cream, but I got into a bad habit of having a huge bowl of ice cream. No bueno.

Also what I'm trying to tell myself is that one slip up isn't an excuse to fall back into my old ways. I would tend to do that in the past. I would have some candy and think well I already screwed up so I might as well just go back to doing what I was doing. I'll just look at it as a slip up and move on and keep trying to eat better.

  11. MsLipGloss

    GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts

@mrskc: I do that a lot too . . . have something sweet, and then eat like crap the rest of the day because I have already *blown it*. I am working really hard to change that pattern . . . like having a piece of hard candy this morning (just 1 Jolly Rancher) and then wanting to swing through the Chick Fil A drive through for a cookie because I had already had sugar today. But I didn't. Because, well, enough is enough, and I need to pick my *hard* . . . and by that I mean (1) not eating sugar/sweets is hard, and (2) not being back at my pre-pg weight is hard, so what I really need to do is pick my *hard*. And I really need to get rid of the weight, so I pick *hard* No. 1.

@LindsayInNY: I've been confessing to my husband more. It helps me work through it, and he can help me through it. Also, then he doesn't question why he comes home to a trashcan of empty candy bags like he did the day when @MsLipGloss and I were tossing our candy.

@mrskc: You're so right about not letting one slip up create an avalanche! I also find that if I make healthy eating decisions I don't want to mess it up with a handful of candy.

@MsLipGloss: These Chick Fil A cookies must be really good! I think it's good to compare and contrast your *hard* decisions in life. You're making the right choice.

@sweetooth: Ohhh, I would NEVER throw bags away in the house! See? Problem!

I survived another commute past Duane Reade without buying candy! Again, it helped that I only had 10 minutes to make my train but still! Also, I tend to have an easier time resisting the urges when I'm working out. SOOO I finally took the plunge and just signed up for the beginner CrossFit classes! They start on Monday (holy crap). I'm excited to be working out but nervous as all hell!!

  14. MsLipGloss

@LindsayInNY: If it makes you feel any better, I have made it a practice to throw my candy bags away *under* more garbage so that DH won't see them when he throws something away. : /

And YES! to another victory! Woot!

My mom is in town. She's staying with me before my sister has her second child. I blame her and the stress she brings into my household for the cookie that I ate this morning for breakfast. I know, I should have more control over myself, I am an adult. But there's something about family...just give me strength to not turn to bags and bags of candy to survive this next week. Or maybe my sister's baby can come early to save me?

If anyone has had the Special K Pastry Crisps before (100 calories per package!), they just came out with two new flavors: Chocolatey Caramel and Cookies and Cream. Eating the Chocolatey Caramel now and highly recommend!!

@MsLipGloss: Just a little slip up! Now you can move on. And I don't think there's anything wrong with occasional treats!

@sweetooth: uh oh! I hope you can survive with your mom staying with you!

I'm still fighting the urge to have dessert after dinner. I've resorted to eating the last of the sweets in our house. I have a spoonful of Trader Joe's cookie butter with some pretzels. To me that's a moderate dessert, but when it's gone, I'm not buying anymore! I'm only going to allow myself to have treats on the weekend.

  26. LindsayInNY

    bananas / 9229 posts

@sweetooth: It wasn't overly strong. It tasted kinda like a cookie! I want to try the cookies and cream one next!

@mrskc: That cookie butter is SO good! I just bought it for the first time. I have it on a graham cracker for a snack

  28. MsLipGloss

@mrskc: It's out of my system now for a while! I actually bought more than just 2 cookies . . . but I only ate two. So, I consider it at least a partial victory! And I was very aware of why I wanted to eat them . . . lots of work-related stress and anxiety.

@MsLipGloss: that's a total success! oh you reminded me that I bought a cookie at Subway last week. oops. What did you do with the cookies you didn't eat?

@chopsuey: lol! I think it's turned into a support thread for those of us trying to break the addiction!

@mrskc: They are in the trash (under some coffee grounds!). Better to be safe than to go trashcan diving in a moment of weakness! I know myself too well in some respects!

@chopsuey: We need to pick a date to get together so I can knock off all of this sugar ridiculousness! And, I owe you for a dress!

@mrskc: I am totally using this thread as a support group! I would not have thrown it away (to get rid of it) before . . . I probably would have eaten it *to get rid* of it instead!

    ETA: Which is insanity!

    nectarine / 2705 posts

@mrskc: I'm sort of surviving, but I have to admit. In a moment of weakness I bought some Heath Pieces (so addictive!) and I've been munching on them. BUT! It's better than my usual, polishing off the whole bag in one or two sittings. // That cookie butter is delicious. I love the idea of it on pancakes!

@MsLipGloss: That's great that you could identify why you resorted to the cookies. This thread is definitely making me think more about why I'm reaching for the sweets. I love that you threw the rest of the cookies in the trash under coffee grounds.

@chopsuey: @mrskc: @MsLipGloss: This thread has totally become a candy addict support thread. It's a safe place, no judgement, and just a gentle kick in the butt to kick the habit or try to control it

@LindsayInNY: Yay! No candy in a week! Success!!!

@LindsayInNY: No shame - if you're in NYC I don't think you would come across a Chick-fil-A. I don't remember them here in DC as much as I do down south.
