So the last few months I've really been struggling with acne. I've got large under the surface pimples on my chin that last for weeks and my forehead is covered in small pimples. My son said something tonight about why I have stuff in my chin

I'd see a dermatologist and go on an antibiotic to clear everything up. My skin started having issues after my last pregnancy, and after I finished breastfeeding I was on an antibiotic for about a month and along with a prescription spot cream everything cleared right up and my skin has been back to normal ever since. The OTC treatments I tried didn't really work on the large breakouts.

I would also echo seeing a dermatologist. Not to depress you, but I've never been successful worth over the counter products for the larger pimples.
It's no fun dealing with it in adulthood

I use Mary Kay's acne skin care. I still get the odd zit bout it is the only product that has really worked. I've tried prescription creams and pills from the doctor but found they were really harsh on my skin and dried it up too much.
Having to deal with acne as an adult is no fun!

I never had acne until my girls were born. My pp hormones were crazy and I had hormonal cystic acne that would take weeks to clear. My dermatologist prescribed Veltin - it's a tretinoin (like retinol but more intense). It's a gentle, at home chemical peel that gets rid of dead skin cells and treats the acne underneath. It's amazing and it works instantly.
Also, spironolactone is an oral treatment that works like almost an antibiotic for acne. I didn't have much luck with it but I've heard others have.
Small, texture like acne is easier to get rid of with topical products, IMO. A daily BHA treatment might help! I'm looking into Paul Thomas Roth BHA/AHA daily pads from Sephora. I used a Dr. Gross BHA treatment recently and it was pretty intense. It's been 5 days since my last treatment and my skin still looks weird.
Last, are you on BC? Sometimes BC helps with my skin. I have mirena right now but it hasn't helped at all with my skin.

I have struggled with cystic acne since I was about 11-12 years old, and it was worse in my 20's and early 30's than it ever was as a teenager. I have had my skin cleared by dermatology treatments, but I didn't want to take prescription pills and creams forever. My skin is usually 100% clear, but I may on occasion get one or two small pimples near my hairline. My cystic acne spots have disappeared completely.

@HLK208: I use tretinoin as a multipurpose.. My derm had actually prescribed it when I said I wanted something to improve texture/fine lines on my face. I didn't start using it until I had finished breastfeeding and coincidentally I also developed acne (had it during preg also) That stuff is awesome. It isn't cheap, its a tier 3 drug so I have a $75 copay but a little goes a LONG way.. and it really, truly works.
Also I use the peter thomas roth peel pads, I really like them a lot. They are simple to use and don't leave me feeling like i got smacked in the face the next day. Sometimes if I use too much tretinoin around my nose it gets red and peely.
Agree with BC: once I switched off the BF friendly pill to my normal pill, it got much better.

It sounds like I need to find a dermatologist. I'm still bf, so right now I'll have to stick to drugstore stuff. Has anyone used the acne line by Mario Badescu? The last at Nordstrom recommended it as safe while nursing but I wasn't sure if it was any better than what I can get at the drugstore.

@glitterboots: I wouldn't bother going to a derm until you've stopped breastfeeding. When I went while nursing they basically said to keep trying OTC things and come back when I had stopped nursing so they could get me some stronger options. It might just be a waste of your time and copay to go now.

Even if BF, they can give you some options. They can also do cortisone shots in the really bad pimples for immediate relief. I had that done and the needle is so small you barely feel it!
