@looch: I saw that gel pens were recommended but a lot of them looked glittery to me and I didn't like that. I literally researched for hours and settled on Staedtler for reviews and quality.

So, patience is not one of my virtues. I decided to print off a page from google and colour it right away. Did this last night! (Sorry for anyone who saw some of this on IG). It's pretty much done now, just a few I left undone because I ran out of inspiration for colours.

@TemperanceBrennan: those look so cool! I'll have to look for them.

My friend gifted me a John Hamm coloring book. It's awesome

@.twist.: looks great!! @Mrs. Bee: it really does help, when I'm stressed I sit and color and it helps a ton.

@.twist.: Beautiful! I love the shading. What kind of colored pencils did you use?

    @Bao: Thanks!
@BadgerMom: Thanks! Those are just these: http://www.crayola.ca/products/100-ct-coloured-pencils-product/

I don't mind them but I have, and much prefer, these: http://www.prismacolor.com/products/colored-pencils/softcore-lead . I just used the crayola ones because we just moved and I can't find my pencils.

ETA: and unless you're veeeery into shading and blending of colours, the crayola ones are quite soft too and will work wonderfully.

@.twist.: I was looking at prismacolor markers and holy expensive

  10. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@Bao: Yea. We have them because my brother and husband are both artists and when my bro stopped drawing he gave me his and so I get to use all the fancy colours. Like I said, they are only better if you're REALLY into blending and shading, otherwise the crayola ones do a pretty nice job of both, too.

  11. BadgerMom

    persimmon / 1385 posts

@.twist.: Thanks! That's good to know about the crayola pencils. I was starting to think I'd be able to buy the coloring books no problem but I was going to go bankrupt buying all the coloring supplies .

ETA. @.twist.: Wait, your link for the Crayolas is actually the prismacolor link. Are they just plain old regular crayolas or something special?

  12. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@BadgerMom: ah! No. fixed it. They're just regular. I just listed the 100 pack because it has all the best colours.

@Bao: Prismacolors are expensive but amazing. I used them heavily in a college art/advertising design class. I'm dating myself clearly since we weren't using software

@BadgerMom: I spent $40 on just markers! They better last. I was a little curious about the twist up Crayola pencils though...

These are awesome, didn't know they existed!
I got my nephews a Mickey Mouse coloring book to occupy them at our beach house and I totally did a couple of pages and loved it!

Off topic but sort of related, I've also gotten into puzzles lately. Felt like I needed a non-electronic way to relax and kill time and really am enjoying it. I'm working on a 1,000 piece puzzle now. Sometimes DH helps me and it's nice time for us.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@SweetiePie: I really want to start doing more puzzles too. I love them and so does DH. Now that we have more room where my cat can't destroy everything, I think we'll start this up also.

I love to color. My husband makes fun of me. I'm not into the adult books though, pass me a kids one and some
Crayons crayons and I'm good to go! It's super relaxing.

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts

@SweetiePie: yes! My mom does puzzles and as long as they aren't all similar colors I enjoy it too!

@.twist.: @Bao: Sorry to be thread jacking but another great way to disconnect and decompress is puzzle books! I love the ones that have a variety including crosswords and logic puzzles and anacrostics. So relaxing and I love opening to a crisp blank page and getting started with a good pencil

  23. Bao

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts

@SweetiePie: any recs for good ones?

  24. SweetiePie

    honeydew / 7463 posts

@Bao: I just get the traditional "Penny Press" ones at all grocery stores, Walmart, etc.
They come out in volumes but I don't know how often since I don't buy them religiously (1 can last me for months since they have so many puzzles).

So I'm too impatient to wait for things to come from Amazon. So I went and bought this at Michaels today (and I already had the 50 pack of colored pencils).

Yes! I have enchanted forest, animal kingdom, and happy campers. I have so many on my "to buy" list!

I've asked DH to get me a colouring book and Staedtler markers for my birthday (in lieu of the utility sink he originally bought me!) but he cannot believe this a real thing. I've showed him this thread, as well as all the options for adult colouring books on Amazon, but I'm still fairly sure he thinks I'm crazy!

I've requested either Enchanted Forest or The Magic City - kind of hoping he gets the city one as it looks amazing, but I'll be happy with either!

@SweetiePie: I LOVE logic puzzle books - they're my sanity keeper when the LOs are being particularly challenging. I keep them in the bathroom, not for when nature calls, but for when I need a few minutes away from little hands whilst still being within earshot - the bathroom, with its scented candles and soothing colours, is the perfect escape.

@Bao: no - there's actually a lot of animals. There are koi fish among the flowers and lily pads on the front. Here are some of the pages:

So I broke down and bought the enchanted forest book on ebay because amazon was sold out and I accidentally sent it to my old address because I hadn't updated ebay yet. Tried canceling but it shipped too fast! Boo. No idea when or if it'll get here.

@Bao: I got the Colour me Happy book and the box of 100 crayola pencils to start off with

@SweetiePie: I love puzzles! We have a room at work for the seniors to do and sometimes when it's quiet I go and sit there and do them!

I did one in crayon today. Not so good at detail but still workable.

Next one will be done completely in marker. I need more colours!

I couldn't take the chance on not getting the other one I ordered, so I just got this one today, haha. I just have to wait for pencils to come in on Tuesday! I have this up on my mantle staring at me.

Target has some of the Staedtler art supplies on sale right now. I got a 24 pack of the colored pencils for $6.29, and so far I like them better than the Crayola pencils. I did not see any markers at my Target.

I have the Enchanted Forest coloring book, and I like it a lot. I bought the Secret Garden book and another pack of the Staedtler pencils for my mom as a thank you gift for keeping our dog while we are on vacation.

I also have the Enchanted Forest book, but with the Staedtler Ergosoft Triangular Pencils & a box of Triplus Markers. I prefer the pencils.

  39. Bao

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts

@SugarplumsMom: do you?? I love my markers, I'll have to try the pencils!

  40. NCSUchick27

    clementine / 995 posts

@SugarplumsMom: I think your pencils are nicer than the ones I found at Target. Mine are just the regular pencils, not the Ergo Soft. They do have a nice little tray the pulls out of the box, which makes it a lot easier to see the colors. I have always hated trying to find the right color in my box of Crayola pencils.
