I think I might be slow at this whole coloring thing. I'm loving it, but you all seem so fast! I'm getting close to finishing half of the first double page design in the secret garden book. I guess the books will just last me that much longer!

@knittylady: thanks! I just got three more 😬 I'm especially excited for the Christmas book I got!

@Bao: Yeah mine is taking at least that long I think. I've worked on it a few evenings this week after work but last night we had a goat emergency so I didn't get a chance (or any sleep). Looking forward to it tonight to ease the stress after last night. I love doing them and I actually like how long they take because I figure the $9 I spent for the book will buy me a LOT of entertainment and stress relief.

@2farmmoms: I'm slow too! I was thinking the same. I have had my book for 3 weeks and I'm only about 75% done with a double-pager. I feel like I should have so much time to work on it since I don't even have kids, but I don't! Can't wait till I can actually finish one.

Awesome! I am loving all these finished pages. They look fantastic!

I'm still working on my first page, the weekend was busy and so is tonight, which bums me out cuz I'd rather be colouring!

Will post it as soon as it's complete.

Y'all, this one is going to take a while... this took me an hour for just that part.

Oh – and I am definitely with everybody who says they feel like they are so slow at coloring. These pages take me so many hours to complete!

Does any one else's hand get super sore? I swear I must have a death grip because my fingers hurt so bad! LOL.

  28. Bao

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts

@abbydabbydoodlebug: it'll be so cool though! @Mrs.KMM: it takes me an hour for a tiny corner lol.

  29. Bao

@.twist.: what did you say you were using again?

  30. Mrs.KMM

    grapefruit / 4355 posts

@.twist.: I noticed my hands and fingers were a lot more sore on the page I colored with colored pencils as compared to the page I did with markers. But yes they definitely get sore!

  31. IRunForFun

    pomelo / 5509 posts

@.twist.: Mine does and I think I'm pressing down too hard when using pencils! I really want to try markers instead.

  32. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@Bao: Pencils. I do a lot of hard shading so I am certain I'm just death gripping the pencils. haha Or, maybe I'm just spending too much time colouring.

@Mrs.KMM: @IRunForFun: I just love the look of pencils so much more! I may have to try markers too, at least to give my hand a break. haha

  33. BadgerMom

    persimmon / 1385 posts

@.twist.: Yes! That's why I'm going to switch to markers for my next page. I hope that will help. I also learned the hard way that anyone over the age of 10 should probably not sit on the couch cross legged for hours... Holy leg cramp

  34. Bao

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts

@.twist.: yeah I would say it's the pencils. I color at night sometimes for 2-3 hours and feel nothing. But I always get crampy and sore if I'm writing in general.

So, would anyone mind sharing how you get started with a page, i.e. deciding on a color scheme and what color should go in what area, etc? I know sometimes it's more obvious, like tree trunks being brown and grass being green, but for pattern-based books or pages where anything goes, what's your strategy? I find it difficult to just dive in and get started when the page is blank, and more than once I've regretted the colors I chose after I've gotten a portion of the design colored in. I know it seems silly but I'm curious whether anyone else feels the same and how to conquer it!

  36. Bao

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts

@PurplePeony: trunks don't have to be brown and grass doesn't have to be green! if you did it that way for every page it would get repetitive. I just grab and go...I think about it a little but don't overthink it! Here is an example of just doing whatever colors I want. I'm working on it now.

  37. MamaG

    pomelo / 5298 posts

@PurplePeony: I understand completely and it's in part why I've abandoned my "pattern" books for now. Too much creative freedom is hard for me. And while my flowery pictures have a lot of green because of all the leaves, it suits me.

I still love my pattern pages/books, but for right now too much liberty in choice is debilitating for my brain

  38. PurplePeony

    pomegranate / 3113 posts

@Bao: I know, but it makes for an easy starting point if you're not sure what else to do! I find that once I have some colors down on the page, figuring out the rest is easier.

  39. Bao

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts

@PurplePeony: you should share one once you're done, I bet it's awesome! I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you do

  40. gentlelunette

    kiwi / 698 posts

@BadgerMom: that looks great! You're brave... That book is so intimidating to me!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: that's going to look amazing when it's done! Nice job

    @Mrs.KMM: oooh, so pretty!

@PurplePeony: totally understand the challenge. I have a pattern book and usually I choose the most predominant thing in the pattern. I pick a colour for that, colour it all in and then I'll choose the next colour(s) accordingly. That being said, I often regret my decisions! I like to think of that as learning though and with each picture I think I get a bit better at choosing the colour scheme.
