I didn't read the article yet, but that is amazing. Probation for killing four people??

This is the point in the Law & Order episode where Jack McCoy then sues the parents for some totally trumped up charge, in order to hold someone accountable for the deaths of the four pedestrians!

Call me a cynic, but I don’t see how this outcome varies from the majority of cases where affluence has certainly played a role in prosecution and sentencing of crimes. Besides the publicity for using money as a defense, the sentence doesn’t shock me; sadly. I mean, how many wealthy whites do you see on death row, right?

Serious bullshit. I completely agree that the judge is just exacerbating the problem of this kid's supposed "affluenza" by giving him a pass on KILLING four people!

My friend was killed by an affluent teenage drunk driver. The driver never showed remorse, she even wore a midriff to court for her trial. She portrayed herself as a victim, there was even an article in a newspaper about her recovery and her struggle to ride her beautiful horses again. Well, good for her. Her sentence was weekend jail so her life wouldn't be interrupted and she could go to college.

Before she hit my cousin's car, her parents called her and she told them she was drinking and driving. They told her to drive home immediately (according to the other girls in the car). I believe the affluent parents were held liable in civil court for encouraging driving while intoxicated.

Bull. and it teaches the child that he will never be reprimanded properly for any of his actions so I'm sure he'll do something else since he got off so easily.

It's bullshit. If logic follows, and it is the parents' fault - why aren't they held responsible for the deaths and put in jail?
I'm sadly not surprised - but it still infuriates me.

Yesterday I was reading this idea that you shouldn't tell your kids to say please and thank you, that they will just pick it up. Guess some kids don't on their own. Kids need boundaries. Though I think you could easily pick up not killing people.

This story disgusted me when I first read it. He kills 4 people and injures 7 others (I think two in his car were critically injured) and he gets probation. Money really can buy you everything it seems.

Rich, white kid receives no consequences because he suffers from being a rich, white kid with no consequences. Seems legit.

@Mae: I agree with that. I am not saying that he shouldn't have to face consequences. The fact he didn't plead guilty is a huge ball drop on his part. I just think back to when I was 16 and the stupid decisions I made. It still doesnt make it right in any means. I think thats why they make jails for adults because adults SHOULD know better. Its a sad case and its really tough situation.

@Mae: that's awful. Just awful. I can hardly believe that it not from the onion! I don't agree that he should go to jail though, I think it should only be for repeat offenders who are endangering others or violent criminals.. Otherwise it's just making it more likely they'll stay criminal for the rest of their lives and at a high price tag to tax payers. This is just so unsettling... I can't imagine the frustration and agony of the victims families.

@Mae: I see the parallel. "Undesirables" are treated with suspicion.

Total injustice, but nothing new. Affluent whites very rarely gets the book thrown at them. I grieve for the families of the victims claimed by this kid's complete lack of responsibility for his fellow man.

That is definitely bullshit.

If this kid is really not responsible because his parents raised him poorly, then the parents should be liable then.
