after the tooth breaks through the gums...

how does your LO act? When my LO's first broke through the gums, she immediately started teething again to cut the second tooth a few days later. Now that both are in, i thought she'd get some relief but she's furiously chomping on everything right now, like almost worse than before! Is this normal "getting used to her new teeth" behavior? I thought she'd calm down once it broke through. is it possible the area around the teeth is still painful as they continue to grow? I'm hoping she's not going right into #3 (UGH!)

anyone else's LO continue the "teething" behavior after the tooth broke through the gums?

depending on the tooth, yes!

his canines have been coming in for what seems like the last half year!!! he's gotten through the crabby but is still biting his lower lip and has days where he seems irritated by them. they're taking FOREVERRRRRRRRR to come in.

The others previous, he still had a cpl fussy days once I could see a lil white, but was back to 100% when they were just about halfway out.

With my boys, when the teeth actually cut through, they've gone back to normal. But, they seem to only get teeth in a mass setting, so they got 6 teeth in the first round of teething.

My real answer is I don't know. I've had the same experience-- she's fussy, crabby, chomping and drooling, and I can see the little bump. It finally breaks through and half the time she's totally fine again, the other half she continues with the fussiness even though I don't see any other teeth coming in. So I've given up even trying and just assume she is teething at all times. Until she's like, 12, that's what I'm going with.

Yes! LO has a tooth through and continues to chomp on everything in sight.

@mrsjyw: half year?! not encouraging!!! haha. I feel like her two teeth are pretty far through the gums at this point, so i'm just surprised she's still in discomfort.

@Mrs. Blue: SIX?! wow! did they get the others on the top or the bottom? she seems to be doing a lot of side chomping, so i'm wondering about the teeth next to the ones that came in. but i thought she's supposed to get the top ones next.

DS has 8 teeth, and his teething behavior drastically changes once they break through the gum line. He isn't incessantly chewing on everything all the time.

@Foodnerd81: haha! until she's 12, huh? if this goes on that long, my LO is going to be an only child but at least that makes me feel like it's kinda normal behavior...

@MrsH: did she get #2 yet?!

Depends on the tooth. If another one was still coming nope, but usually once it is out of the gum it gets better.

@Alivoo01: that's what i was hoping was going to happen! i had pretty much promised DH that it was all sunshine and rainbows after the tooth breaks through the gums...he's pretty pissed at me haha.

@Pirouette: Also, her teeth have not come in in the order the books said they would. I think it was bottom front two, then top two, then the next bottom two next to the center (I thought it would be top next). I have a friend whose canines or incisors came in first so she looked like a little vampire for a couple of weeks.
And yes, I will blame teething or developmental wonder weeks for everything from now until she gets married. Or 12, I don't know.

DS2's bottom ones came one after the next. A few days later I noticed his top teeth coming in too.

@Foodnerd81: oh i know. i think it's pretty cruel that babies need to learn all this stuff and grow all these teeth on the outside...why can't they be born with a full set of teeth and the ability to walk like other animals?!

@Pirouette: You know, I had the exact same thoughts about 'why can't they just be born with teeth?' Then I remembered learning to breastfeed and I said, no, this is better.

@Pirouette: He still puts everything in his mouth and will occasionally bite still though. Hopefully the pain and discomfort eases up for your LO soon so that it will be rainbows and sunshine for your DH. hahaha! Or that your DH will get accustomed to teething and won't even think twice about it anymore!

@Pirouette: They got their top 4 and bottom 2 all right around the same time (like within 1 1/2 weeks of each other). It sucked, but honestly it was kind of nice because it meant we only had one miserable time period for all those teeth!

@Foodnerd81: haha oh yea she's biting now but i can only imagine how much worse she would've been then when she had no understanding of cause and effect! we would have been formula feeders

@Alivoo01: hahaha thanks yea it's not just normal play chomping, she's vigorously trying to bite the head off her lovey haha. and she moans as she's falling asleep hoping this all passes soon!

@Mrs. Blue: hmm...you know that doesn't sound so bad right now...i mean she's already in the thick of it, why not?! her top gums don't look swollen though i don't think. will have to investigate!

@Pirouette: yea the canines have been the anomaly, the rest of his teeth have come in rt away as soon as i saw white... the canines are the only set that have been cutting one by one (he used to cut teeth in clusters)... and they're taking FOREVERRRR to come out to full size baby teeth! i hope it goes faster for you!!!

@Pirouette: Poor thing!!! DH gave DS a lion shaped stress ball when all 4 of his lateral incisors were coming through. DS took a big ole bite of the lion's butt and started chewing on it. I had no idea till I was like, what are you eating??? Thankfully he didn't swallow it.
