Does anyone have an alarm system on their home? What company do you use? And what are the costs like?

We've had several break-ins on our dead end street, and we've been spared I think mostly because we have several enthusiastic and vocal sounding guard dogs (that if anyone made it in would be utterly useless, but even the UPS lady knows to sneak packages on the porch! However, we do live in a sort of dodgy neighborhood and I feel like even just a basic alarm system would be useful, even if just to make us lower on the list for a break-in. DH however thinks it's useless and a waste of money. So I'm wondering what you bees think!

ETA: One of the break-ins was our immediate next door neighbors in the middle of the day while I was home alone with LO. There was also a shooting less than a block away, also during the day while I was home alone with LO (I SAH 2 days/wk). Gah.
