I never thought she was innocent and I feel bad that the tragedy of Meredith Kircher's death was overshadowed by the Amanda Knox circus. But, I'm British so I'm probably biased.

What I don't understand is how they can have a 3rd trial?! She was convicted, then it was overturned on appeal. Isn't that the end of it?

I think she is innocent of the killing but I do wonder if she knows more than she is letting on.

I'm not sure. I read her book and it all made sense to me. Sounds like it was an unfortunate situation for her due to some bad decisions made in haste. BUT I'm not gullible enough to think that she didn't just fudge the whole story in her book.

But the book seemed pretty believable. Everything made sense when she explained it all.

@looch: She doesn't have to go back for the trial. But if she's convicted, appeals, and loses her appeal, she has to be extradited to Italy.

I think that most people don't have sympathy for false confessions and false admissions. But they're a huge problem in the criminal justice system... this article in New York magazine really opened my eyes:

I think she knew more than she said and that she was likely involved in an indirect manner in Kercher's death. I do however think that it's ridiculous how many times this girl will have been tried for the same crime, Italian court or no.

My guess is that the US would not respond to an extradition request from Italy.

I don't really know if she did it or not. But it doesn't seem as though they have enough to prove she definitely did so I think they ought to leave her alone now.

@Mae: Ditto. The evidence put forth against Amanda Knox was ridiculous and contaminated.

I think everyone needs to thank thier lucky stars that we live in a country where we are innocent until proven guilty. Can you imagine having to face a battle that begins with your presumed guilt?

And I believe that the US will not respond to Italy's request for extradition in the event such a request is made. The US has long standing laws against double jeopardy and I will be surprised if our government decides to subject one of our citizens to a life sentence based upon legal standards that falls far short of our own.

I've also read a lot on this case and I believe she's innocent. And I don't believe she was involved in any way. If she was, the evidence sure didn't prove it beyond any kind of reasonable doubt. I'm not familiar with Italian law though. In Italy, do they have to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt?

I also think Amanda Knox is not guilty of murder - some poor choices, sure, but murder, no. I think the Italian police botched the investigation from the start and were looking to blame it on her, so real evidence was contaminated and the truth has been lost in the process.

On an unrelated note but in a similar vein, I have similar feelings about the Portuguese police in the Madeleine McCann case - they botched it from the start and were looking to blame it on the parents, rather than accept that their incompetency probably allowed the kidnappers to get far enough away with that poor little girl, that their chances of recovering her are probably slim to nil.

Stories like both of these anger me beyond belief, and make me feel terrible for the families involved.

I believe she's innocent of murder. She may or may not be guilty by association. It looks like she was very scared, panicked, and lonely so the Italian Police could of coerced her into saying the wrong things. She did not get a fair trial as a result.
