Hi all,
I used to be fairly active here but haven't been on much since my daughter was an infant. I'm 7 weeks pregnant with my second, and am having terrible anxiety.
We just got back Friday from the Dominican Republic for my sister's wedding. Myself, my husband, and my daughter have all had gastroenteritis since Thursday. I am terrified that the cause may be an infection such as listeria, salmonella, or goodness knows what else that could cause fetal death. I am still having lots of pregnancy symptoms, but I know that a missed miscarriage can still maintain symptoms.
So, realistically Bees, am I crazy, or should I really go get checked out?? How many weeks do you have to be before a doppler can pick up a heartbeat?

I know with my last pregnancy, they were able to get a heartbeat with a transvaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks 5 days. I would call the OB/GYN, it can't hurt.

I would call my ob, if it were me. Can't hurt! They might want to bring you in for an appt or at least have baby-safe suggestions about getting back to health. And, the heartbeat usually starts being visible sometime during the 6th week by transvaginal ultrasound.

I would call for peace of mind. They saw a heartbeat at 6 weeks for me. I hope you all feel better!

I'd also call for peace of mind. My OB routinely sees you at 7wks for first appointment anyway. Also, I had various stomach bugs on and off in first tri. and baby did just fine. One lasted a full week.
There are lots of icky ones that can make you feel awful while baby is doing just fine. Hope that is the case for you as well.

I'd call for peace of mind! I don't think you can reliably hear a heartbeat on the Doppler until around 10 weeks, but they would definitely be able to see it on an ultrasound by now.

But I think if you aren't to the point of being hospitalized and dehydrated you should be fine.

We saw a heartbeat at 6w4d. If you are nervous go ahead and call, it can't hurt.

We saw a heartbeat at 6w2d with LO1. I would call just to be certain everything is okay.

As others said, I'd call for your peace of mind. We saw the hb by u/s at 6 & 7 wks.

I'd call my OB just to be sure. They picked up this pregnancy at 5.5 weeks...we weren't able to hear it, but we saw the flicker and they got a good read on it.

My OB was really proactive about checking things out if I felt anxious, because a relaxed momma is better for baby than a stressed momma. I would call

Definitely call, if only for peace of mind! It's too early for Doppler, but there's a good chance they'll pick up a heartbeat at 7 weeks.
For what it's worth, I've had two stomach bugs with this pregnancy, thanks to having a toddler in day care. Baby is fine. Most of these bugs aren't the dangerous kind, despite how miserable they make you. Hope you all feel better soon!

I would call! Although I will say last week I was hospitalized for dehydration (morning sickness + 48 hr bug) and the ER dr wouldn't even do an ultrasound. He said my hormone levels were great and that he doesn't like to do more ultrasounds than necessary. I was pretty frustrated but hoping my OB will do one tomorrow to help put my mind at ease (I'm 8 weeks). GL!

You can ask for an early ultrasound as early as 6 weeks. I would call your OB/midwife right away. It won't pick up on the Doppler so you'll need a req for the u/s. My symptoms for my missed miscarriage were my boobs stopped hurting and then I started bleeding.
I had a stomach bug in my first tri (pregnancy 2) and everything was fine. Good luck!

My RE was able to get a heartbeat at 6 weeks through a transvaginal u/s.

Thanks everyone. Normally I wouldn't be worried about a stomach bug, but I am because I picked it up in the Dominican. My GP (don't see an OB until 20 weeks here) is on medical leave but her partner has agreed to see me Wednesday. I appreciate all the replies.

@NurseMommy: I got giardia when I was in the DR. It is a pretty common thing to pick up there. I don't know how that would affect pregnancy.
