I'm thinking I could save some money by finding used car seat bases.
We are having twins and are planning on getting 2 additional car seat bases (chicco key fit). They retail for $80+ each. I could get them from my MOM (mother's of multiples) group for $25 each.
Anything I'm not thinking of? Safety? Do they expire like car seats do?
Oh, I'll make sure to ask if they are free of any accidents.

I believe they do expire because of the plastic. I'm not sure if they are marked to show the manufacture date.. If so and free of accidents, I'd totally consider getting used bases!

I'm guessing the carry some of the same risks as used car seats- like you have to trust that the person is being honest that there was no accidents. But realistically I'd be more comfortable with a used base than seat. There are more invisible thugs that could be wrong with the seat (like someone could have soaked the straps to clean them or whatever).

@bluestriped bee: it depends on how much you know and trust the original owner.
They do expire and do need to be replaced if in an accident.

We bought ours used. They do expire, but after like 6 years. As long as it hasn't been 6 yrs and hasn't been in an accident, I didn't see a problem

They do expire, but they are also not necessary. Baseless installs aren't hard to do.

We bought ours used for $14 and it said right on it when it expired (not til 4 years after we bought it).

@bluestriped bee: Too bad you aren't closer! We are getting rid of our two bases and car seat in a couple of months. We bought one of ours used and don't use it often, but we've had zero issues with it.
