My husband and I have been discussing our options for my going back to work. We're considering asking my employer to allow me to cut my hours to part time and work from home. Has anyone asked their employer for this option? How was it received?

I have thought about this...and it was actually offered to me before I came back on leave. I opted not to take it because I was afraid I would stay PT. Not to mention less of a paycheck and losing all my benefits, in particular health insurance!

I work from home 1 day a week right now. Plan on asking for a 2nd work from home day (I will have my mom there both days).
I don't think my boss would consider it otherwise.

I asked to go part time before I was to return. I was to go from 5 days to 4. I knew that my boss wouldn't consider it if I didn't ask before I went on maternity leave.

It really depends on the nature of your job. I wanted to work part time, but they dont have part time options here, so I had to come back full time

There are part time options here, and while I considered it, I'm not sure I want to lose all my 401K, pension, and healthcare benefits. I'm convinced it's not worth it. Not to mention they might have to shift me to another position, and I would lose a lot of leverage =\

I did and part time was rejected. But we came up with another option and I now work from home 3 days a week...which is soo helpful when you commute over 100 miles roundtrip daily!

before i went out on leave i talked to my boss about working from home a few days a week when i came back and they were more than happy to accomadate me(i think they were afraid i would quit). i would prefer to work part-time, but that's not an option, so i work 3 days home and 2 in the office.

@mrsjyw: that would be my absolute ideal. Hm. I did not think work from home was an option without having to pay for childcare. But I never considered asking MIL to be there. Interesting...

I'm not willing to give up the paycheck or the benefits that I would lose by going part time. And unfortunately my company doesn't allow people in my position to work from home because of some overtime lawsuits that have occured in our industry.

@regberadaisy: my mom will be our primary caretaker so she'll be there on my office days anyway, she just plans on being there m-f and i can be there on certain days/etc.
Really ideal for me.

I did but I didn't go part-time. I actually started working more hours so that was well received!

Well ladies. It is no longer a concern for me...I am officially part time as of this week.
Can't talk much now but will post more later!

I may ask for reduced hours, but not low enough to be part time. I want to make sure to stay on full time status and work 25- 30 hours/week. I know many mothers in my department that have done this so I hope its not a problem for me.

ETA: Whoops - just realized you turned them down before... are you happy about the change?

@mediagirl: I know this is an oooold post, but wondering how this worked out for you? I'm hoping to ask the same thing in the next month or so (fingers crossed!).
