@Iced Tea: Nope! I grated it, soaked up the excess water with paper towels, and sauteed it. I might be particularly sensitive to the smell, though, since I've never liked cauliflower or broccoli (its cousin). Maybe I need to try the frozen riced cauliflower to see if it's any different.
This morning's weigh-in put me at 19.6 pounds down. I was feeling kind of celebratory, so I ate a small bowl of Chick Fil A's chicken noodle soup (13g carbs). I suspect I might have gone over my limit of 20g today. And I'm soooo hungry.
Yesterday, I was cleaning out the car and found crushed chocolate chip cookies in the car seats. I almost ate them. Stale, crumbly, dirty cookie dust seemed nearly irresistible.
Then while making some cinnamon raisin toast for my kids this morning, I held the bread up to my nose and just stood there inhaling it for a long minute, like some kind of drug addict.
I might be going a little crazy.

@Iced Tea: body recomp is awesome! Definitely take measurements! If your clothes aren’t fitting that’s way better than losing weight because fat loss is way harder than just weight loss! I’m down 60+lbs in the last year but I’m basically the definition of “skinny fat” because I have zero muscle mass!
Gaining muscles is amazing and awesome and I bet you look fantastic! Losing fat is great because you know for sure you’re makinh huge improvements in your health. I carry so much weight in my abdomen it makes me really worried about all the fat on my organs!
@lamariniere: mine is to enjoy myself but not eat food that will make me sick. I have a tendency to go overboard and then feel crappy because I ate crap! So I focus on eating to fuel a great vacation, which includes some indulgences, but not to go overboard.

@Iced Tea: Great job!!! and yes, it's not so much the weight that matters, but how you feel about how you look.
I don't remember, but are you working out a lot or what specifically are you doing to get toned?

@Hypatia: HAHA! Inhaling the smell of bread/desserts is totally my MO. I'm glad someone else admits to this. Sounds like you're doing awesome.

@NorthStar: I’m mostly doing the weight machines at the gym and lots of squats and lunges. Also a limited amount of easy-going stationary bike and treadmill. I can’t do vigorous exercise due to a heart condition, so I think I’m doing pretty great with my limited options!
@hilary: @Hypatia: The sniffing reminds me of when I was pregnant. My husband ordered a flight of whiskeys, and I smelled every one of them!

@Ajsmommy: Right there with you. This past month I had 1) a trip to an all inclusive resort 2) a work trip where my foodie coworker planned and expensed some amazing meals 3) 4th of July and 4) my husband was in the hospital for several days. So I have been eating junk and not working out like at all the past month. I was up 5 lbs but down 2 since I'm finally getting back into my routine again. But we're traveling for a wedding next week so I'm sure its gonna go all out the window again. Ugh

The good: I lost 27 lbs.
The bad: I stopped the diet three days ago.
So, everything was fine (well, let’s be real, dieting is miserable, but I was trucking along), until I got a kidney stone. The most common types are caused by excess calcium and/or sugar, which could not be the case here because I eat basically no sugar and very little calcium (only in the form of cheese, and I honestly don’t eat much of that). But there’s another type of kidney stone caused by uric acid, which comes from eating a lot of meat. 🤔
I went through twelve hours of vomiting and pain that made labor look like a walk in the park. I went to the ER after becoming severely dehydrated (couldn't keep anything down). The doctor warned me that either this stone might not have passed and went back into my kidney, or there might be other stones to come. So for three more nights, I had 6 - 8 hours of more vomiting and pain (the only thing the ER did for me was give me morphine, so I wasn't about to rack up another bill there). I drank alkaline water and took lots of vitamins to try to combat it, but I don't think it made much difference.
So the caveat is, it could be that I might have gotten kidney stones regardless. The doctor didn't know whether it was the diet or not. Lots of people do keto without a problem. But since the keto diet is so high in purines, I'm guessing it was at least a contributing factor. I did eat lots of leafy green veggies while on the diet (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, etc). But that doesn't cancel out all the meat I was eating.
So for at least the time being, I'm calling it quits. It makes me sad because I really feel like I could have lost the final 20 lbs. in another month or two. But I am still a lot healthier than I was, and if I can maintain this weight, I might be able to lose the rest down the road. Right now I'm just focusing on putting as little stress on my kidneys as possible and limiting my meat intake.

@Hypatia: eek, sounds miserable. Our doctor recommended Keto recently, but I decided it was just too restrictive for our current stage of life. I’m doing really well with lower carb, plant heavy diet though. I guess it’s closest to Mediterranean. I’ve lost 30ish pounds this year.
I am so psyched because I opened my boxed up skinny pants, and I was able to zip all but one. Success!!! There are some shirts I won’t be able to wear for awhile because I’m still breastfeeding my one year old, and the boobs are still oversized.
At this point, I’d like to continue doing the same things to build some more muscle tone and reduce the fluffy misection. Now to get my husband on board....

So...I didnt totally fall off the Wagon but late June and the first half of July have been hard with lots of traveling. The good news is I am down 2 of the 5lbs I wanted to lose this summer!
I'm still rocking IIFYM and enjoying it. I find that Sat/Sun end up being harder to manage, but when I clean my act up on Monday any temporary fluff from the weekend disappears on the scale by Tuesday AM. I hand handle this.
I signed up for a half marathon (ambitious - but fun to have something to work towards), so I have been running 3 times a week and doing HIIT style workouts two other days.
Slow n Steady wins the race!

@Hypatia: oh my!! I have to tell DH, he does keto and already previously suffers from stones.

@Ajsmommy: Be sure to tell him to take a 400g magnesium supplement! They've been shown to prevent stones.

Can I still join you all?
Been trying to lose weight as well for PCOS and other reasons.

@Hypatia: omg, that sounds absolutely horrible. Did they ever pass?! I know it's disappointing, but it might be best to take a step back for at least a bit.
I haven't really lost anything and fell off track as well. We were in Seattle on vacation all last week and I had the best of intentions to try to work out most evenings. But, it was in the mid-80s with no air conditioning in the house we rented. Soooo, yeah, the workouts didn't happen. My DS also decided 4am was a wonderful time to wake up each day, so let me tell you - a vacation with kids is NOT a vacation. lol. Anyway, I am just going to take it easy this week and eat healthy. Then, get back into the workouts next week. I'm so jetlagged and just need to catch up on sleep.
@MrsDynamiteGal: Yes, please join! We all need support and are still working out or eating better.

@MrsDynamiteGal: Please join! Maybe you'll help motivate us all to get back on track
I'm down 1 lb from last week. I head out for a weeklong vacation tomorrow though so I'll be lucky to be at the same weight when we get back. I've decided that I'll kick my butt in serious gear in August

@MrsDynamiteGal: yes join us!! and help get us back on track.
I was doing so much better when I was checking in here more regularly.... I guess it was making me more accountable. So I am going to try to be better again about posting regularly.
This week is not going to be good bc it's raining allllll week so no walking or barely getting outside, my mom is visiting hello dinners every night and my best co worker is leaving for maternity leave in 8 days so we have been going out to lunch together every day instead of eating my healthy choices... but it's her last few days of pregnancy so I am kind of just "going along with the flow" I am trying to eat a little healthy but it's not as good as eating a healthy choice!!
But once she's out I will get back to eating my healthy lunches, I am doing well with the diet dews so maybe august will look better......
I haven't even weighed myself in like a week!! that's how bad I have been... I need to step on the scale at least every other day or so to keep track!

Thank you @northstar, @jennypenny, and @ajsmommy. Happy to be joining you! My biggest motivation right now is my health, my family, and preparing for #3. I have PCOS but beyond that everyone in my family has diabetes. Same for my husband. That makes my children's risk even greater. Letting myself go in recent years has brought so many health issues to the forefront. It's been a wake up call.

Hey guys I’m still here too! I’m 24 days into a 30 day solo parenting misadventure (DH is away doing an intensive grad school program for teachers). And my eating has gotten out of control!
I’m officially up +11 lbs from a month ago. I’ve just been stress eating like crazy. Plus it’s been a brutally hot July (easily 100+ degrees at least half the week) and the girls and I have been getting crazy cabin fever. There is only so much time you can spend at the splash pad with a three year old and a one year old!
Yesterday I had a good day. I tracked 90% of my foods and stayed reasonable. My trigger foods seem to be peanut butter and cereal. So none of those for me!
I’ll try to keep updating! These last few weeks have really been tough.
persimmon / 1310 posts
@newlypregnantlady: I am solo quite a bit also, and it's tough to make healthy choices when you're so stretched. My compromise was to start intermittent fasting as often as possible. So I eat dinner early with the kids and don't eat again until late breakfast or lunch. It limits my calorie count and gets me to that fat burning state. Then I feel like I haven't totally tanked my progress, even if I had pizza and ice cream with the kids! I also try to do take out from healthier places like the Mediterranean place Zoe's Kitchen.

@Iced Tea: I’ve definitely been trying to get back to IF. It definitely helps me out a ton. It really doesn’t help that my three year old has chosen this month to drop her nap, plus the baby is newly walking and half-dropping her morning nap and I just got my first pp period!
I’ve done okay so far today. I’m focusing on drinking enough water and logging all my food today.
cherry / 119 posts
@newlypregnantlady: I've only ever heard of Intermittent Fasting (great things!), but never personally tried it. Maybe I'll make it a focus this month.
And speaking of which, August is about one week away! It's a new month!
kiwi / 556 posts
@MrsDynamiteGal: I call it IF but really I only do 16:8 so it’s more like “skip breakfast and don’t eat after dinner”. I do the most basic version!
apricot / 364 posts
@newlypregnantlady: Do you drink coffee at all? I tried IF 16:8 but didn't give up my coconut milk latte so maybe it would be more effective if I gave that up?
Also I totally need to get back on track with working out. New month so might try to do 30 minutes of something every day.

Me! I need accountability. I had my second baby on 5/22, he's 2 months old and I have about 15 lbs to get back to prepregnancy weight... 20 to get back to where I'd like to be. (25 to get back to pre-baby #1 weight, but I don't think that's realistic at this point, I was like a size 2 then!)
I have lost about 8 pounds since mid-June, so I'm pretty happy with that. I'm on an elimination diet (breastfeeding) but even with that, didn't lose any weight until I started watching what I ate and exercising a little. I'm using My Fitness Pal to track what I'm eating and watching my milk supply to make sure it isn't impacted. I would like to exercise more, but I don't really have time. I'm just going on walks at night in our neighborhood a few times a week.

@hilary: I do drink black coffee. But you could always just drink your latte and not eat food? It’s really just a tool to help me compress my eating times by creating a set of rules. There’s no magic bullet that makes IF work better than anything else (it all just comes down to calories). I absolutely take little cheating things like having a bite of my kids’ breakfast or whatever. I just make sure to be honest about it, if I’m not losing weight it’s because I’m eating too much.
Some people find that breaking their fast makes them hungrier sooner than if they totally abstain from food (they don’t like to “break the seal”). That doesn’t happen with me as long as I’m not eating a whole meal or snack. A couple bites of eggs don’t make a difference for me. I’m pretty down about my recent gain but it’s all about the long game. Ultimately I’ve still lost 50lbs so I’ve had a lot of time to work through strategies that do and do not help me eat less food. And it’s such a fine line! For my height and activity level the maintenance calorie difference for my current weight versus my starting weight is only like 300 calories. That’s not even a decent dessert! Because I like bigger meals I like IF because I can have two decent meals vs three measly meals.

@MrsADS: Welcome! I love MFP. After pregnancy and nursing hunger I absolutely need math to tell me how much to eat. My hunger cues are so messed up now. I started my loss around when my LO2 was a couple months old.
I started by slowly decreasing my calories by 100 each week until I got to a rate of loss I was happy with. It was so much easier for me because I never had any drastic changes and so my body just gradually got used to eating less. Good luck!

I’m back after a week of vacation and am quite pleased to have only gained 1.5 lbs. So I have 8 lbs total I want to lose. I’m going to aim to get 4 of them off in August!

@MrsADS: awesome!!
@FaithFertility: You can do it!
@JennyPenny: that is amazing...good job!
I am still plugging along... I haven't lost anything but I am maintaining. Today is my co workers last day at work before maternity leave and we have been going out to eat every day so starting tomorrow I can focus on getting back on the healthy lunch wagon and hoping i'll see some good results....
