I've done lettuce with good results...as long as you don't over water, and your pot has good drainage, it's rather simple.

I tried to do tomatoes on the patio last season, and it failed miserably, mainly because it was too hot and my patio gets no shade. My patio herbs did great though, and I still have rosemary growing.

@Mamaof2: My husband is / has! He starts the seeds inside and then puts them out when the last frost has occurred.

We've had the most success with squash, green beans, and tomatoes. Lettuce and spinach are actually considered the hardest, but it could just be our environment.

In terms of overheating, you have to be very mindful about their temperature tolerance and desired sun exposure. We live in the South, so this is a major one for us.

Lastly, there honestly isn't that much of a price difference in the end between seeding and buying the already done plants at Home Depot. Your seeds are going to come up a little later in the season (he started the seeding process in March and they are now ready to go in the ground this weekend).
