I've had our chicks for a week now, and we love them! I'm surprised at how low maintenance they are. We initially got 6, and added two more on Friday Anyone else have backyard chickens?

We do. At first we started with 17 (we bought them at about 5 months old) and fell in love. This year we really expanded and still love it. We have Rhode Island Reds, ISA browns, Wellsummers, and Cornish Rock Crosses for meat. @grizz: I'm excited for you.

My dad does! If we had a house with a yard I would love to because of the fresh eggs! My dad gets 18 eggs A DAY! He loves his chickens

I want some but my husband refuses, he says they're too much work. We also have 3 dogs.

They're not legal in my city. I want them so badly though.
I am fortunate though to get our eggs from someone who raises his own pastured chickens

My brother has about 15-20. His kids LOVE them! It was so cute watching them move the "yard" over Easter and herding the chickens to the new location.
They just added turkeys and bees to their backyard too. I'm interested to see how the bees will work out with so many little kids around...

I wish! Our town doesn't allow them! We're probably not rural enough!

@MaryM: Aw man, I totally want bees too! Except I'd be too chicken to extract the honeycomb. I do want to get some more bees in my yard though...

I grew up with chickens and my parents still have them. They are SO low maintenance, they get fed feed/scraps once or twice a day and get let out to roam around on their own so it's just shutting them in their coop at night. Fresh eggs are amazing!

No but I'm harassing dh until he gives in! There's no reason we can't have them and I think the kids would love it!

Yes, we have two! they came with the coop we bought, and we haven't gotten around to adding more to our little flock. I've heard it can be hard to add new ones in.

@Seattlemom: did you do the rent-a-coop program? We just saw a news story about that last week and it looks like an amazing way to get set up.

@Mrs. Polish: No, we bought the coop from someone on craigslist and she convinced us to take her 2 bantam chickens too. We had wanted to get a bunch of chicks to raise together. Now I'm too whimpy to try to introduce new chickens to the flock.

@Mrs. Polish: Do you have any tips for adding chicks? I've heard the older chickens can be pretty hard on them until a pecking order is established!

@grizz: they are soooo cute! I would love to have backyard chickens!

@Seattlemom: I would definitely be cautious introducing new chicks; chickens can be VERY nasty to each other, which is how my mom ended up the adoptive mom of a blind chicken literally being pecked to death by the other chickens because she was the weakest one.
Our HOA bars chickens, which is too bad because I wouldn't mind getting a couple. It's probably for the best though since I wouldn't be good with the handling of the "old chickens" a couple years after you get them!! Too soft hearted!!

@swurlygurl: want to make a simple bee house for native bees???
Take a tin can, and fill it with big straws, like slurpee straws or small hose, and lay it on its side, out of the sun, somewhere with shelter.
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
@Seattlemom: we're keeping our chicks separated from our 1yo chickens until they're full grown. We introduced some full sized ones to our flock and it was a rough 30 min or so between the two groups. Everyone was fine in the end, but I'd definitely wait until they're big enough to defend themselves. Don't let that stop you from adding to your flock!

@Seattlemom: I love your girls. I'm wanting to get Polish chickens but haven't gotten around to it yet. I like the distinctive looking ones.
