So by the looks of my ultrasound today at 37 weeks my son is already almost 8 pounds! estimated weight at 40 weeks will be around 9 1/2 pounds (ouchhhh).... im little only 5 feet tall!! just wondering if anyone else had a large baby and were you able to have your lo naturally or did you need a c section? were you induced early because of size?

My MIL delivered DH by emergency C-section. He was 10 lbs.

I was 10lbs, my sister was 11lbs. We were both completely uncomplicated, unmedicated vaginal births that went from ruptured membranes to baby in under an hour each time.
DH's cousin recently had a 12.5lb baby boy vaginally with no medication at home (and she's so super tiny!). It can definitely be done, my mom thinks a lot of it has to do with what you go in assuming- if you assume its going to be really painful and difficult, it will be.

would you be mad at your doctor if they knowingly let the baby grow so big? I have a friend who is 6 feet tall and in good shape-and she delivered a 10 lb'er with no meds and it tore her up so bad. i am only 5'4 and have a super small frame. they estimated today he would be "around" 9-10 lbs if he gains a 1/2 lb a week from here until my EDD! ahhh!!

@lydg: how far along are you? did they talk about induction or c section? sounsd like your in a simialr situation.
i wouldnt be mad per say i just want him here the best way possible for him. -
DS was 10lbs 9oz. We had 2 ultrasounds at 37 and 39 weeks to make sure he was head down and to check size. DH and BIL were both 10+ pounds too, so I expected a big baby. Not only was DS big, but he had a huge head and an even bigger chest.
The ultrasounds can be off by a pound either way, so it is not uncommon to be told you are going to have a big baby and have an averaged sized baby come out.
I also feel that being induced leads to more interventions and possibly a C-Section than just having a big baby.
I was induced 10 days past my due date and wished I had waited another day or two to see if DS came on his own. The induction was rough and made contractions come without any break in between and I ended up getting a spinal block after being in labor for about 18 hours. I had to have an episiotomy to get DS out (big head too), but it wasn't that bad. (Good recovery and sex since then is good).
Because of the error in ultrasounds, I'd suggest not jumping to induction or C-Section and try to go into labor naturally. Small women have big babies all the time.
On a side note, my SIL is pregnant (BIL's wife) and she is 5'2" and I'm expecting her to have a somewhat large baby due to DH and BIL being so big and DS being big as well.

How big was your husband when he was born? If he isn't the oldest sibling, how big was his oldest sibling when they were born?

it's been years, but my mom, who's only 5' like you, had two pretty large babies. my brother was 9lbs and i was 9lbs 5oz. she had to have a c-section both times. they let her labor for almost 48 hours with my brother, and due to his size and her small frame, it just wasn't happening. so, when it came time to give birth to me, she opted for the c-section.

LO is estimated to be 8+ lbs when she arrives and is in the 78% percentile. Because of this my doc is inducing me a week before my due date (Monday)!

@stargal 30 weeks as of friday. we havent talked about induction or c-section at all with doctor. i see my dr again in 2 weeks (no sono). baby is measuring 100g over for "average" 30 week GA so she said my due date is looking about a week earlier. all his measurements were either average or above average for a 30 week GA...his ab circumference was the about the same for a 34 week GA! good thing it isn't his head...yikes!

DS was 9lbs 5oz and born at 40w2d. I'm 5 feet tall and ended up with a csection. I originally wanted a med-free, vaginal birth but after 18 hours of labor, I never passed 5cm (I arrived at the hospital measuring 4cm). Anyway, I'm still planning on trying for a VBAC with baby #2.

@mrs.stilly: he's the oldest and was around 7 pounds and i was a micro preemie less then 2 pounds, so i have no idea where our lo is getting his size from lol! i havent gained above the average amount of weight and dnt have gestational diabetes, so iguess he's just a large baby.
as long as its the safest way for him, i would like to have him naturally and im afraid that if they wait til 40 weeks, i wont be able to because of size. also getting a c section for me is more of a risk because i am getting treatment for a blood clottign disorder.

A close friend of mine had a 9lb 14oz baby girl naturally! She didn't have any problems during delivery.

I was just looking back at ultrasound pictures and found one where I was bout 36 weeks pregnant and had an ultrasound showing she measured about 40 weeks or 8lbs 13 ounces.
My OB offered a C-Section due to LGA (Large for Gestational Age) but I declined. I told him I would do it if it became an issue but I really wanted to try to be induced. My induction went great and even though I had pitocin and an epi I was able to deliver her naturally and only had a very tiny tear. I felt great within a day or two and she was born 9lbs 7 ounces at 39w6d.

My mom's 5' tall and I was 9lbs3ounces!
She delivered me naturally without meds.. sorry mom!My LO was 8lbs1ounce. A good size I think!

I was 9 lbs. 9 oz. and both of my sisters were over 9 lbs. and my Mom (5'-3" 120#) delivered us all vaginally without pain medication. You can do it!

My cousin was over 13lbs at birth! Now he's 6'6", haha. Born naturally. It couldn't have been too bad because my aunt went on to have two more after him (girls - they were smaller)

my bro was 10 11oz and my mom did it vaginally but the doctor KEPT on begging her to do a c-section and she had to sign papers and keep on constantly saying NO to them. How annoying...
I'd induce, personally hehe. But, that's just me. I am 5'3"ish-5'4". -
I don't think your height or size makes one damn bit of difference. a narrow pelvis might but only if the majority of the baby weight is from a big old head or shoulders with large circumfrence. two of my girls had babies that were 9+ and they had them vaginally with no issue. if you are really worried about pain a friends induction and then c section and recovery were awful she said and she wishes she would have or could have waited it out and just given birth to her baby who was only slightly overdue. childbirth hurts but i don;t get the impression that the weight of the baby matters so much as the head shoulders and if its natural or induced labor.

My son was 9 lbs 14 oz / 23 inches and was born via c-section. They had estimated he would be between 8-9 lbs- which he probably would have been if he wasn't born 10 days past my due date. I pushed for about 2 hours and was making zero progress so my doctor recommended we do the c-section. They were also worried about the fact that his heart rate was not recovering as fast as they wanted when I was pushing. Once he was born and they saw how huge he was my doctor assured me there was no way he would have come out on his own :).

My baby was 9 lbs, born with no meds and only 40 minutes of pushing. Remember, the size of your pelvis on the outside does not necessarily mean that it is narrow on the inside.

I had a friend who delivered a 10 lb-er a few months ago. She is about 5'3" and her husband is 6'2" (although he and his siblings were 9, 10, and 11 lb babies)
This was my friend's 2nd child (although her first is about 6 yrs old so huge gap between). She was able to deliver vaginally. You never know! I hear its not the size of the person, more the size of their hips and "down there"

You can't always judge on the parent's weight at birth: my sister and her husband were both premies (4-4 and 4-5) and their oldest was delivered by emergency c-section at their combined weight: 8 lbs 9 oz. Their next was 9 lbs 2 oz.

I delivered my 8lb 2oz baby partway--but he ended up being a c section for different reasons. He should have fit out.

My LO was 10lbs 8oz, 22in long and had a 14.5in head. She was 100th percentile for height and head and 98th for weight. I delivered her vaginally, although I needed forceps because her head was crooked in the birth canal. She also had shoulder dystocia.
I didn't get induced early. She came 6 days after my due date.

My lo measured big so I had an ultrasound, but they said it could be off either way by a pound. She ended up being 8 lbs 13 oz. Didn't have to have a csection, and went into labor naturally on my due date.

Had my son at 41w3d with no meds or interventions (though it was close! We got stuck for a while at 7cm when he wouldn't move down), and he was 9lbs 3oz. It can be done, but only if it's physically possible; a friend had a slightly smaller baby but her pelvis was just too small to get him out and she ended up needing a c-section.

My son was 10lbs, 7oz when he was born in March at 38 weeks. He had been estimated around 8-9 lbs. I was induced (b/c of my type 1 diabetes, not his size), and labored for 20 hours. When he hadn't made any progress after four hours, even though his head was molding, the doctor recommended a c-section. Though it's not what I wanted, I went ahead with it. Good thing, I suppose. He's 90th percentile for height, weight, and head circumference.

he was sunny side up and stuck under my pubic bone so they had to vacuum him out.

My LO was 8ls and I had a csection because she ended up being breech.
