DH and I have a long way to go financially before we can buy a house, but we want one sooooo bad (with a baby now and 2 extra kids for a month in the summer).
At 31 & 40 we feel way behind and like the only non-homeowners in the world.
Anyone else NOT own a house yet? What steps do you need to take to get there? What's your timeline?

we do not own and house yet. Housing prices in NYC are very high. I feel like we will never get there.
I also feel own a house is a HUGE investment. my father has an older house and its always in need of repair.
so even if we can own one the upkeep is going to be very hard

We don't own a house and will probably never own one as long as we're living in NYC. We are looking into buying an apartment but for the money we'd have to spend on one in our neighborhood we're actually thinking about moving out of the state. We're 35 (me) and 31. I don't see us owning a home until I am in my 40s and only if we do decide to relocate.

I will turn 38 next month and we just closed on our house last month. Honestly, I don't feel like I've "accomplished" anything by becoming a homeowner. I would be just as happy, actually, happier, renting.

we are young (25) but do not own. we will not for awhile..finances. boo.

We don't own. We have most of a deposit saved but we need to work out whether we'll settle here in Canada or move back to England before we can buy anything. We're in our early 30s too and have one LO but I spent most of my twenties traveling and having a blast so that's where the money went...

We are 32 and don't own a home. We live in a city and housing prices are pretty crazy, so there isn't much of an incentive to buy vs rent. We probably will buy a house in a few years when we move to the suburbs. We actually have a good chunk saved up for a down payment, but it just doesn't go that far in the city!

We are 32 and 34 and we don't own. We're renting a house for the moment, with plans to buy within 2-5 years, ideally. Not owning doesn't bother me much, probably because we're so close to NYC and renting is the norm here. Plus, we're in a somewhat transient area, so there are a lot of renters here, too.

we do not own yet, but are looking. house prices are ridiculous in our area (north of Boston) esp. if you want a good neighborhood/school district. we have been saving for awhile, but still will not have enough for 20% down.

We're 29 and 31 with LO#1 on the way, and don't own. We need to pay off some debt and save for a down payment first - realistically looking at 3-4 years before we buy.

I guess it's very different if you live in NYC or other big cities!
We rent a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment right now. Been there for three years+. Sick. of. it. Second floor apartment too - was already a pain with groceries, now even more so with a baby! We really need more space whether it is renting or owning. We'd also love a yard. It's really hard having the kids here this summer being cooped up in an apartment all day. I'd also love a garage as our cars get broken into pretty regularly. And our neighbors are weird ...
We have no savings. At all.
Like I said, a loooooong way to go!

We rent still. We are working on buying something in hopefully about 6 months to a year. We are 31 and 30.

We are 29 & 30, we don't own a house as we have been moving around the country for the past few years for Dh's work. Now that we are expecting our first LO and will be more settled we need to wait until the bank decide our business is financially viable enough to consider giving us a mortgage... which won't be for another couple of years.

We don't. We were looking to buy earlier this year, but DH isn't working right now, so obviously that puts things on hold for a while.

We're 32 and 36. Don't own and never have... BUT... we are finally house hunting right now. It's very exciting. I think we're going to put in an offer on a place later this week. It's kind of scary to see our life savings all go into a single building, but this is something we have been working towards for a long time now.

We are 30 and 31 and we don't own. We would love to buy a house but DH will probably be changing jobs soon so we're not sure about location. We rent a single-family house so it's nice to pretend, but we would like something of our own.

We don't own, and I'm 28 and DH is 30. House prices around here are very high, and it's unlikely we will own unless we move...or wait until we're like 60.

We don't own (25 and 28). We're young so we're not in a rush. I have a sh!t ton of student loan debt...we're working on aggressively paying that down. The thought of adding a mortgage to our monthly (student loan) debt makes me get anxiety! :-\
My husband is ready to buy, like, yesterday, but realistically I don't see us taking the plunge into home ownership until late 2015/early 2016 - at the earliest!

We're 32 and don't own. We need to win a bidding war before we get a house. Things routinely go $100k over asking here. We've been outbid six times. We've been looking for two years this September.

@cmomma17: We didn't do much out of the ordinary. We just moved up in our careers over time and managed to start saving more money due to higher salaries. We also moved to a *much* less expensive part of the country for my new job, which means we can now afford our forever home, instead of just a starter home.

We currently rent, but plan on building a house in the near future (less than a year maybe?). We were "gifted" (we are paying, but not market value) the land from family.

We are 29 and 30 and we don't own a house. We are going to move back east so that's why we don't own.

We are in our 30s and have never owned. That said, we have always lived in big cities, last one was NYC, this one is Vienna and buying is just completely out of the question. It is way too pricey, and we still haven't decided on our forever city...if we even will have one in the next 20 years!

We are 27 and 28 and are probably about 3-5 years off from owning. We live in a very expensive area in California, and plan to purchase out of state once I'm done with my graduate studies and DH has put in a few more years at his company.

Dh and I don't own a home. We presently are living with my folks until we know what is going on with DH job. Once we have a plan we hope that we have cleaned up our finances enough to buy our home by winter. Right this minute since we don't know how long we will be here it wouldn't be smart to get into a house or apartment.

We are 26, and don't own. I just graduated from law school and moved to DC a year ago, so that's why. We started saving a few months ago, and it adds up so slowly with student loan bills! I thought we wouldn't start trying until we owned, but we love our apt and there are plenty of young professionals with babies here, so it's not crazy! Maybe 2015 we will be ready to buy. We want to do the FHA loan, but will still need at least 30K for DC prices!

We rented until about a year ago, and we're 31 and 34 now. The big deciding factor for us was that we wanted to move up to at least a 2-br and the rental prices for those in our city were approximately what our PITI payment ended up being on a 4-br single-family house. Since we knew we'd be TTC relatively soon, we felt it made sense from a "what is right for our family" perspective, though not necessarily from a financial one because houses are undeniably expensive! Furnishings, fixing things, higher utility bills, etc all add up. I think we'd be somewhat better off money-wise if we still rented, but it's hard to know exactly how much because the types of housing are just so different. Renting and owning both have their own pros and cons!

We are 30 & 31 and are still renting. We are starting to look at houses, but I would be surprised if we buy anything before next summer. The only thing that might change that timeline is a BFP!
We are saving up a down payment.

@cmomma17: Oh, I feel down about it A LOT. I get very jealous of my peers/friends who are buying houses (which I know is immature, but oh well--I keep it to myself). I also feel guilty because I always wanted to own a home before I started a family (our first is due in November). I know that the baby doesn't know the difference, it's not the most important thing, we have all the essentials, etc., but it just isn't how I envisioned things happening. You're not alone!

Now we have a baby in an apartment and I really hope we have a house and a yard for him to play in some day. But at this point he is almost three months and we don't even have a savings yet. We're 28 and 29 and don't own. We don't have enough saved het. i hope to start looking at the end of the year. The thought of the monthly payments doesn't bother me too much because we're hoping to keep our budget pretty close to our current rent.
