The only baking I've done is those cake box mixes! And I always buy a cake. But something like baking a cake for your little one's birthday sounds so special. Maybe I will give it a try this year.
Will you bake your LO's birthday cakes?

I bake a lot, so I'm planning on it. I'm not a great decorator, though, so it'll be pretty simple or rustic looking.

I bake cookies. That's it!
I'll always order cakes from my favorite bakery.
This year I ordered a pororo cake!

I made LO's smash cake! It was a special quinoa cake for his allergies, complete with special frosting that I decorated in a white on white lace pattern. Loved it...made for great pictures..made the kid sick! (one of the ingredients was corn based and corn was new. Found out the hard way that corn is a no-no).
In general I'm a better baker than cook...regardless I'm not a fan of cleanup

I love love love to bake!!! I took a cake decorating class last year, so I have *some* skill in that department too. I can't wait to bake birthday cakes for my LOs

I made her vanilla cupcakes for her bday from a box!

I love baking, and I love baking cakes in particular, and I can do simple designs (with pastry bags and piping tips and frosting combs) pretty well. The thing is, I really prefer the more "simple" cakes--something that just looks good to eat, rather than a cake that has Disney characters or sugar flowers, or what-have-you.
My SIL is known for making these crazy B-day cakes that she spends a ton of advance time on making characters and flowers out of gumpaste, etc. etc. and I won't be living up to that.
So if we are having a family or small Bday party, I would make it. But if I were having a big, themed party where I wanted to cake to be crazy complicated, I would buy it.
Pics! I could make the first cake easily, the second one..absolutely not.

I'm not an awesome baker but I would love to make my lo's birthday cakes. My mom made most of mine and I asked for her simple yellow cake with chocolate frosting cake most years. It was box cake mix and tub frosting and I loved it.

I actually plan on begging my SIL to make it She's the cake decorator in the family, and any attempts I made would be just saaaaaad.

I love to bake but rarely do after having kids. For the bdays, I mainly ordered cakes but once baked a giant cupcake using a box mix and the wilton giant cupcake pan (very easy and high impact for those who are curious). I also made an Elmo cake (wilton pan, was kind of hard to pipe). For DD's 4th bday she asked for a "fairy cake" and I decided to give it a try. It was my first time doing anything with fondant (store bought) and i used a cake topper. I was really happy with it but may stick to ordering the cake from on

I bake, but nothing I have baled taste out of this wirld amazing or looks so great it could win a prize. I will likely purchase sweets for parties and make homemade goodies with my LO for everyday treats.

Yes and no. I am ok but my cakes never turn out how I want them to. The last time I attempted was for DS's 2nd birthday. I made Elmo and Dorothy. I have since vowed to just get one from a baker.

I love baking but to be honest I kind of suck at it (:
As a compromise to myself I will have two cakes every year, one for her, made with love. And one for everyone else, bought with cash (:

I love to bake but I will be buying her cakes once we start having parties. I don't bake cakes to feed 20+ people and lord knows I don't have the time!

I'm not a baker but have always done DS 's cake (from a box). No they don't look like a Cake Boss cake but he's always loved that I did them for him.
I plan on making P's cake (a bean cake) since she's got so many intolerances & will do it "naked" since I want it pretty am I'm not really all that great at decorating them.

@Mrs.B: I think your cakes are adorable and so creative! My DS would have loved your cakes.

I'm not a baker, but I think it would be fun to make my LO's first birthday cake! I prefer the style of cake that has the rustic globs of frosting squeezed on all over, so I think that would end up being fine for a novice like me.

I prefer cakes out of a box, and I love grocery store cakes :). I'll make LO's smash cake, but it will be simple...and from a box!

I love to bake, but I think I'm better with cookies. However for LO's first birthday, I'll make him his first cake.

I will bake my kid's cakes. I have no problem using a box mix - they tend to taste better and are less work than from scratch, imo. I will probably make my own frosting, though. I will finally get to use all the cake things I got for my wedding!

I am a box baker too. I can do some things freestyle and I can decorate some fancy(ish) cupcakes.

I will bake my kids b-day cakes! I already make DH's, all of our parents, and siblings! I am not a professional- but made a wedding cake this past summer, and catered a wedding with cupcakes!

I love to bake! But often don't have much time for it anymore. For DD's 1st birthday I wanted to make her a rainbow cake and while I wanted to pull my hair out trying to bake each layer separately while juggling napping and feeding, loved the result! These are vegan white cakes. It was a Jungle and Rainbow themed birthday - props to my Silhouette cutter for the cupcake animal toppers!

@littleveesmommy: that came out great! Do you happen to have the vegan recipe you used? I haven't had a lot of luck with vegan cakes.
I like to bake but I haven't decided if I'm going to attempt LO's birthday cakes or not. It will probably depend on the theme, if we have one.

I like baking and plan to make our birthday cakes, but like Anagram I prefer simple cakes. Plenty of them are adorable! Smitten Kitchen's monkey cake or Sweetapolita's rainbow doodle cake are the most complicated birthday cakes I can imagine myself making (though I wouldn't classify them as simple).

No idea what we will do about her cake this year!

@Mrs.B: Thanks!!!
@Orvis18: Thanks so much! I was afraid since I never baked vegan before but DD's eczema flairs up with eggs and corn so I decided to try it. I replaced packaged baking powder with a homemade formula (I never realized how many things had corn until I had to avoid it). I also found a recipe to make your own cake flour and its way cheaper than buying cake flour! The original recipe is from http://www.myvegancookbook.com/blog/2010/01/30/white-cake-recipe/ and below are my tweaks plus the frosting recipe. I separated the batter into small batches, colored and baked in a 5" baking pan for about 8 minutes to make the mini 5" rainbow cake.
2 cups bleached cake flour (1/4 cup potato starch + 1 3/4 cup AP flour, sifted)
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder (1/4 tsp baking soda + 1/2 tsp cream of tartar + 1/2 tsp starch - mix well before adding to bowl)
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 cup water
2 tbsp melted light vegan butter (or coconut oil)
2 tbsp canola oil (or coconut oil)
1 tsp clear vanilla
1 tsp lemon juice
Prepare your cupcake pans with paper cups and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl add dry ingredients: flour, sugar, salt, baking soda and powder. Stir together. Next, in a separate small mixing bowl combine the wet ingredients: water, butter, oil, vanilla, lemon juice. Stir the wet ingredients together. Now pour the wet ingredients into the mixing bowl with the dry. Take special care not to over mix the ingredients. DO NOT use an electric mixer. Stir it with a big spoon and stir slowly until ingredients are well combined with a few lumps.
Pour the cake batter into the cupcake wells, filling them 3/4 the way. Place into oven and cook 20 to 25 minutes or until a tooth pick can be inserted in the middle and it comes out clean. After they are out of the oven let cool for 30 minutes before icing them with your favorite vegan icing recipe or use our white cake icing recipe.
Whipped Cream Frosting
Makes 1 frosting for a 2 layer cake
1 (8 ounce) package cream
cheese, softened
1 cup white sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
Directions
1 In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar salt and vanilla until smooth. In a small bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Fold into the cream cheese mixture.

Yes! I used to be an awful baker but practiced a lot and now I hardly mess up. I baked LO's first birthday cake and DH frosted it.

I will make LOs cake from scratch. I love baking. @littleveesmommy: I am also curious as to the recipe you used.

I'm an OK baker, but I ordered a smash cake and cupcakes for LO's party this weekend. Just one less thing for me to worry about. I'm sure as she gets older I'll make cakes for her.

I hate baking and am terrible at it. I have every intention of buying my son's cakes. Plus, the bakery I go to has the most delicious cakes ever and if I'm eating cake, I'm going all out!

@littleveesmommy: Wow, you are so talented!
I CAN bake but I don't think I have the artistic ability to frost one and make it presentable. Maybe I'll try one day.

I like to bake, but I'm not awesome. I made her smash cake, bday cake and cupcakes. I'll only do it if it's still fun Otherwise I'm ordering from the store!

I'm not a baker or a cook, but I've turned into a cook for my LO. For his 1st birthday I baked a cake from a box because it was easier than finding a bakery that could make a gluten free vegan cake. I will try again this year with a bean cake and see how it turns out.

I love making from the box cakes and brownies. I don't have the equipment to bake from scratch. Thinking I may bake a cake today now that I think about it! I have a couple of boxes in my cupboard.

I love baking! I made a standard chocolate cake with raspberry frosting for the girls party (http://www.hellobee.com/2013/02/22/a-family-fiesta/ ) and a paleo layer cake for Sunny's little family dinner. For Ria's 1st I made a rainbow cake which was a bit crazy but adorable. I'm no good at fancy decorating though, just making things yummy.
